53: Helicopter Ride!

It's our third day in Maui. I'm getting dressed while Hazel talks to Vanessa in the living room. I change into a grey, light material dress. I blow dry my hair which is wet from the shower and then choose to wear no make up for the day, except some lip gloss as it's a hot day.

When I walk into the living room, Daniel is ending the Skype call as Hazel shouts a last goodbye to Vanessa.

"Ready for breakfast?" I ask the two of them.

The building which houses the breakfast restaurant at the Westin is a two minute walk from the building our suite is in. We walk along the cobble stone path, under the shade of palm trees that line the walkway. Hazel runs ahead to get to the point from where she can see the ocean.

"That's the ocean?" She asks, turning back to us as we reach her.

I kneel down next to her, "That's the ocean. You remember it from our trip to Paris?"

She nods in reply. She only got to see the ocean from the plane when we were heading to Paris but she was surrounded by its water all day, yesterday and was stunned by the majestic blue waters of it. This is Hazel's own little heaven.

"Let's have breakfast. We can get a table with a view of the ocean." I tell her and take her hand before leading her towards the restaurant doors where Daniel is waiting for us.

As I promised Hazel, I request a table with the view of the ocean as opposed to one of the tennis court. We're shown to our table and handed menus. An hour later we're all full and happy with the delicious breakfast we were served.

"I'm going to the lobby to check whether the car's arrived." Daniel tells me as the waiter brings the cheque to the table.

"I'll clear this and meet you there." I say.

"Do you want to come with me?" Daniel asks Hazel as gets from his seat.

Hazel decides to accompany him while I pay the bill. A few minutes later, I'm walking towards the lobby when my phone starts to ring. I check to see that it's Daniel.

"I'm almost at the lobby." I say, answering the call.

"The car is here. We're in the front parking." Daniel tells me.

I tell him that I'll be there in a minute and end the call.By the time I get to the parking, Daniel is waiting for me next to a black Mercedes which we're renting for the day. I can see that Hazel is already buckled into the car seat that we asked for when renting the car.

"Can I drive?" I ask as I walk up to him.

"Yes!" He pumps a first through the air.

"What?" I ask, confused.

"Didn't feel like driving today." He shrugs, making me laugh at the silly reason. I kiss his cheek as he opens the driver's door for me and I get in behind the steering wheel.

I buckle in my seatbelt and wait for Daniel to finish doing the same before driving out of the hotel parking. The hotel is secluded from the main populated area of Maui so for the first ten minutes of the drive there's nothing but greenery all around. After that signs of civilization start showing like roadside shops and restaurants. I take the highway around the main populated area as instructed by the GPS and head for our destination.

Another fifteen minutes later, the sign of the exit I'm supposed to take appears. I drive off the main road, onto a smaller road till the sight I'd been waiting for all day emerges from between the vegetation. The helipad is a huge clearing in the middle of the forest with several helicopters scattered around the area. I park the car and switch it off as Daniel helps Hazel out of her car seat.

We are welcomed by a staff member.

"Sir, we have to check your documentation." The man says.

I expect Daniel to hand over his ID card but instead he holds out a folder which I hadn't noticed before this.

"What was that?" I ask Daniel.

"Documents." He answers vaguely before starting onto the helipad towards the area where helicopters are. I look down at Hazel to find an awed look on her face as she examines her surroundings.

"Excited, Bunny?" I ask her. She simply nods in reply. I laugh at her stunned face and follow Daniel towards a man who's beckoning us.

"You're clear, sir." He holds out the folder that Daniel handed over earlier.

"I'll go put this in the car. Why don't you two get in?" Daniel suggests as he hurries back to the car.

"This way." The man says and leads us towards a helicopter right in the middle, clearly meant for take-off.

I kneel down next to Hazel and tell her about the helicopter that we'll be riding. She gobbles information about the places we'll be seeing. I hear a camera shutter click from behind me. I turn to see Daniel putting away his phone before approaching us.

"Ready to go?" He asks.

"Are you riding upfront?" I ask Daniel.

"We all are." He says and it takes me a second to catch up with the hidden meaning in his words.

"You're piloting?" I ask.He nods with a smile.

Daniel learnt to fly helicopters the year after we graduated college. The last time he piloted was on our honeymoon and the time before was something even more special. This will be Hazel's first time with Daniel flying a helicopter.

"Do you want daddy to fly the helicopter?" Daniel asks Hazel.

She eagerly nods her head and takes his hand as I climb into the cockpit. Daniel sets Hazel on my lap and I buckle us in together. Hazel is too little to be able to see anything out on her own if she's sitting on a seat. I'm handed a microphone ear set for Hazel.

"These will help you hear and talk to daddy and me. Okay?" I explain as I help her put it on and secure it under her chin. She looks adorable.

I then put on mine as Daniel gets into the pilot's seat next to mine and follows the same steps that I did.He checks various settings before he flicks a switch and I hear a low swish, muffled by the headphones which indicates that the blades have started to rotate. Within a few minutes we're cleared for takeoff and we slowly rise into the air.

Daniel may not use his flying knowledge too often but I know that he is an excellent pilot from the two times that I've flown with him and I feel safer with him piloting than a hired pilot. We don't speak as we rise vertically till we've reached a suitable height for horizontal flight.

I hear Hazel gasp as we rise above the vegetation and the ocean comes into sight.

"Wow." I hear her whisper.

I turn to look at Daniel but he's already wearing an identical smile to mine as he must've heard her too.

After a few seconds of flying Daniel finally speaks up, "The men at the helipad traced out a route outline that we should take for the best views, starting with the Honokohau waterfalls."

"Okay." I say too excited myself with the views already to care much about what specifically we saw.

"Hazel, do you remember Jurassic Park?" Daniel asks her and then when she looks at him confused he adds, "The movie with dinosaurs."

"Yes." She nods.

"It was filmed in Maui." He tells us.

"Really?" I ask. This is news to me too.

"The mountain scenery used in montages is of Maui, I looked it up. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it." Daniel smiles at me, clearly the same thoughts on his mind.

Jurassic Park was played at a local cinema screen when we were at university and we made a date out of it after Daniel learnt that I had never watch the movie before that. This helicopter ride was bringing back so many sweet memories which made my heart content.

"Look, Hazel!" I point out as we fly towards a majestic waterfall that Daniel informs us is called Honokohau waterfalls. One flows into a pool from where another emerges. They are breathtaking. I take out my phone and lean as further back into my seat as possible to take a picture of Hazel looking out at the waterfalls. Her eyes are wide open as she gapes at the beauty in front.

"Isn't it pretty, Bunny?" I ask Hazel. She turns back to look at me as her face erupts into a smile and I laugh at her excitement.

We cruise over the waterfalls, admiring its beauty before moving on to circle the island. By now there's nothing but lush green vegetation and ocean in sight. I take a deep breath and survey the scene, not able to drink it up enough.

"Oh!" I exclaim and start to laugh. "I get what you mean."

Just then Hazel starts humming the Jurassic Park theme music. The mountains in front now are scenes I clearly remember from the movie. I can almost imagine seeing herds of dinosaurs running in the valley below. We slowly circle the entire mountain, taking pictures and selfies with various views before Daniel switches on the radio to contact the helipad and let them know that we're ready to descent.

I have to force Hazel to sit back so that Daniel can access all controls with ease. Ten minutes later we're back on ground and Daniel switches off the blades. We unbuckle ourselves and take off our headphones as the crew approaches. One of them opens my door for me. I jump out and then help Hazel out after me.

"Did you two have fun?" Daniel asks as he joins us. I'm sure the wild excitement in our eyes and broad smiles are enough answers.

We let Hazel run ahead of us to the car so she can get out all her excitement as we follow behind. I feel Daniel take my hand and swing it lightly, making my smile broaden.

"Today was fun." I tell him.

"I'm glad you had fun." He replies, stopping suddenly and yanking me back too.

"Wha-?" I start to speak as cups my face and crushes his lips to mine. When he pulls away, just a second later, I'm already gasping for air.

"What was that?" I gulp.

Daniel starts to walk again but then turns back with a smirk on his face, "I'd been wanting to do that the entire time in the air."

I shake my head as I feel my cheeks go warm.

I loved writing this chapter! IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! I actually did my research for this chapter's scenes. They are all real. Eeeek!!! I would love to visit Maui one day, the pictures on the internet of the waterfall especially were breathtaking, can't even imagine seeing it in person. *sigh*

I'm adding pictures at the top, just as a sneak peak into what I mean by breathtaking ;)
