37: Annual Dinner
"Ma'am, Zenna Hodge is here to see you." The helper announces from the living room doorway.
"Please show her in." I tell her as I set the sleeping Hazel on the sofa beside me and get up to meet her.
"Hi! Thank you so much for making time for this." I thank her.
"The pleasure is all mine. I couldn't believe that you of all people wanted me to do your hair and makeup." She squeals.
I laugh at her excitement. "Would you like something to drink? Tea? Coffee?"
"Oh no! I'm good. I'll let you know if I need anything." She says.
"Should we get started then? I have to leave in two hours?" I ask.
"That's ample time." Zenna tells me and asks where she should set up her work station. I show her to my vanity room and then come back downstairs to talk to the helper.
"I'll leave by 7 o'clock, so wake Hazel after that and make sure she eats some dinner. She knows that I won't be home so she'll go to bed by eight thirty. But please stay around in case she needs something. Okay?"
"Of course, ma'am." She nods.
"Alright. I'm going to get ready."
When I get back, Zenna has everything set up, her make up palettes and various tubes line the wooden table in front of the wall mirror.
"I want to use my own make-up brushes, will that be okay?" I ask her.
"That's fine as long as you have all the ones I'll be needing." I show her the drawer with my brushes and she finds all the ones that she needs.
We get to work and she starts with my hair that she loosely curls. Make-up comes next for which I decide to go natural. Everything turns out exactly the way I wanted it to. An hour and a half later we're all done.
"Wow! This is amazing." I complement, turning around to look the back of my hair in the mirror.
"Do you like it?" Zenna asks, raising her eyebrows.
"I love it. Thank you!" I smile at her.
"You're welcome." She smiles back at me. "Why don't you go get changed? I'll pack up my things and then in case you need anything retouched, we can do that."
"Okay." I nod and head for my bedroom.
The dress I bought for tonight is in the walk-through closet. Once I've changed into it (picture of the dress is above!), I put on my heels and grab my clutch from the bed and twirl in front of the floor length mirror to get a good look from all angles and I must admit I feel beautiful.
Zenna is waiting for me in the living area.
"You look gorgeous!" She exclaims.
"Thank you so much for this." I say as I give her a hug.
"I'm really glad you like it. I've had clients who can be really mean. You're too nice."
"I look really good. Thank you." I assure her.
"You're very welcome. Do you need anything retouched?" She asks.
I shake my head. "I think I'm good."
"Cool! I should get going then." She says.
"Well, thank you for coming again!" I thank her again as a helper shows her out.
I check the time on my phone and it's almost seven which means I should get going. I'm at the front door when Hazel's voice behind me makes me turn around.
"Pretty!" She squeals, clapping her hands.
"Thank you, Bunny." I kneel down in front of her so that I can hug her.
"You have to be a good girl. Okay? Daddy and I'll be back soon. Just let one of the helpers know if you need anything." I tell her.
"Okay." She nods.
I kiss her head and then stand up to wave goodbye. She walks back to the living area where Vanessa is and I leave the house.
The driver waits with the black BMW. He holds open my door for me, then closes it after me and gets into his seat.
I get excited about such dinners every single time one comes around but then when I'm actually on my way there, my stomach goes haywire. I have butterflies in my stomach and I feel nauseous because there's going to be the press, other businessmen, their partners and a lot of people from the public who come to watch the red carpet.
The car pulls up to the venue sooner than I would have liked. There is usually a que at dinners but we don't have to stop until we're right at the head of the red carpet, I guess that's the privilege of being the host's wife.
While the driver comes around to my side, I close my eyes and take a deep breath. The door opens and the sound of music and shouts reaches my ears. The shouts are mixed with the sound of cameras clicking.
I step out of the car and cameramen meet me with their flashes. They scream my name to get my attention but Jeremy walks up to me.
"Come on. Let's get you going." He says, leading me down the carpet. People call my name from behind the barriers but all I do is smile and give them a small wave.
"Where's Daniel?" I ask.
"Hey." I feel someone kiss my cheek from behind.
"Hi!" I say, as my eyes take in his suit and my heart flutters.
"You look beautiful." He smiles at me as my heart threatens to shatter.
Unable to say anything, we share a quick kiss before Jeremy informs us that the press are ready for our pictures.
Daniel takes my hand and leads me up two small steps where a long wall has been set up covered with the company's logo that is acting as background for pictures. There are people on both our sides but they've left a lot of room for us so that we're practically alone.
Daniel slides an arm around my waist and I place a hand on his back as we smile for the cameras. After about five minutes, we step down to shouts for more pictures but Daniel has to do an interview with a news reporter inside the hotel where the banquet is.
Jeremy takes us to a private lounge, the interviewer isn't here yet, so we sit together on chairs, side by side.
"What was Hazel up to?" Daniel asks.
"She was asleep but woke up just before I left. She must've gone back to sleep by now." I reply, checking the time on my phone.
I look up to find Daniel looking at me. A blush creeps up my cheeks. "What?" I ask, suddenly feeling shy.
"What did I do to deserve you?" My heart melts unable to take the overwhelming emotions. He slips a hand behind my neck and pulls me to him. I sigh into the kiss. When we pull away I push my hair back so that it goes back to the way it was before.
A minute later, Jeremy appears around the corner with another man, presumably the interviewer.
"Do you want to stay?" Daniel asks, looking at me.
"I think I'm going to go to the hall and say hello to everyone. I am the hostess after all." I wink at him.
The banquet hall is full of people, some are already seated at their respective tables, others are finding their seats, and some just stand in groups talking.
"Emma! Hi!" A voice catches my attention.
I turn around to find, Reese Williams behind me. "Hi Reese! How are you?"
Reese is the wife of one of the directors on Daniel's board and she's also the only person I'm close to out of all of Daniel's colleagues, mostly because she has a son, a year younger than Hazel.
After we've caught up, I excuse myself to make my round and meet everyone. I'm halfway around the hall when a somewhat familiar voice speaks up.
"Mrs. Aaron!"
"Hello." I say cautiously.
The man stares at me. "We meet at last."
"Have we met before? You sound familiar, but I can't really place it." I say, frowning slightly.
My heart races at his reply. "I'm Hamish Hamlet."
