18: Homecoming Dance
I love my homecoming dress that mom helped me pick out. It's a beautiful dark purple halter dress with a self-print all over and it stops just above my knees.
Once I've done my make-up and curled my hair to my liking, I call in mom and sit down on my vanity stool in front of the floor length mirror in my room. Mom pins back my hair just as we discussed when we chose the dress. After finishing my hair, mom bends down and kisses my cheek.
"You look beautiful." She smiles at me in the mirror.
"Thank you." I smile back, my heart warm and fuzzy.
She leaves me so that I can finish getting ready. I put on my Hazel tree necklace and then slip on my heels before putting my phone, student ID and some cash into the purse that I'm borrowing from mom for the night.
Despite it being a Friday night when usually dad pulls all-nighters at work, he's home now waiting at the foot of the stairs. He turns around when he hears my heels on the floor.
"Wow, Bunny." He says, "You look beautiful."
I feel shy getting all this attention, "Thanks dad." I say as I reach the bottom stair and he pulls me into a hug.
I hear a camera shutter go off and look over dad's shoulder to find mom in the living room doorway with the camera in her hand.
"Smile you two." She says as she raises the camera to her eye.
"I'm not even dressed for homecoming." Dad jokes, making me laugh as he puts an around my shoulders and I lean in towards him.
Next mom hands dad the camera and I have a picture taken with mom. During this time Seb joins us. He's wearing the new tuxedo that dad and he bought on their homecoming shopping spree, the same day that mom and I went on ours.
"Family photo." Mom announces and puts the camera on timer on the console in front of the stairs as we all huddle together for the picture.
"Excited for you first homecoming?" I ask Seb as mom and dad look at the pictures on the camera.
"What if my date ends up hating me?" He shrugs.
"If you're the same guy with her that you're with me then rest assured, anyone would love you." I smile at him.
A helper appears to let us know that Adam is here. Dad leaves to get him and Sebastian says goodbye to mom and me before he leaves. He's taking a car and a driver to pick up his date from her house since he's too young to drive.
"Treat her nice!" Mom calls after him and Sebastian gives her thumbs up as he leaves the area in front of the stairs.
"Here she is." Dad says, leading Adam to us.
"Hey." I say when I finally see him. He looks dreamily gorgeous in his tux.
He's stunned for a second when he sees me and my cheeks warm up as he mouths, "Wow." Behind mom and dad's back.
"Time for the last picture." Mom says as she ushers me towards Adam and has us pose for a picture.
"Think straight." Mom reminds me as we say goodbye and I nod in understanding before I let Adam lead me out of the house to his waiting car.
He holds open the door for me and I get into the passenger seat.
"I didn't make you wait, did I?" He asks.
"Not at all." I shake my head as he begins to drive.
We keep up a constant chatter all the way to school. It's the end of September so we've been dating for almost three months now. We've gotten comfortable with each other so quickly that it seems as if we were simply meant to be together at times.
When we arrive at the school, the parking lot is filling up. Angelina and Claire had to come in early since they need to overlook the entire event but I decided to come in late because all my work ended once the payments were made and the school administration was informed. My next task will be sorting through pictures from tonight's photographers for the school's campaigns and social media accounts. But that comes later.
When we step out of the car, Adam takes my hand and we begin walking towards the school's indoor gymnasium. The music spilling out of the open doors gets louder as we near the gymnasium.
I spot Claire near the photo booth throwing a tantrum.
"I'll be back in a minute." I tell Adam as I walk towards Claire.
"This is the wrong shade of purple!" I hear her shriek when I get near her.
"Claire? What's wrong?" I ask.
"These idiots ordered the wrong shade of purple for the backdrops!" She accusingly points towards the people from the homecoming committee who worked for her or 'minions' as Angelina and I dubbed them.
I turn to the scared three girls and one boy standing by and smile, "You all did a great job. The gym looks marvelous. Don't worry about Claire, go enjoy your night."
Looking relieved they hurry off to their friends and I turn back to Claire who is glaring at me.
"They fucked up!" She screams at me.
"Okay, whoa." I raise my hands in defense, "Firstly, they're also humans. Everyone makes mistakes. Secondly, the theme is purple and this is purple so it doesn't even matter. And thirdly, stop yelling at everyone."
Claire lunges for me but I step back. "Just stop Claire!"
"Just stop Claire!" She mimics me and then spits, "No you stop Hazel!"
"What did I do?" I'm confused.
"You told Ben to break up with me!" She accuses me.
"Oh my gosh." I roll my eyes and start to walk away but Claire pulls me back, "Tell Ben to announce me as his date."
"I'm not doing my best friend dirty." This time Claire is stunned enough that when I pull my arm out of her grasp, she lets me walk away.
I run into Ash, Liam and Ben before I find Adam.
"Hey guys." I say as they wave me over.
"How do you look so beautiful every time?" Ash asks, making me blush.
"Good genes?" I suggest.
"Definitely." Liam nods enthusiastically, making all of us laugh.
"Have any of you seen Adam?" I ask.
"I talked to him near the dance floor a few minutes ago." Ben says, pointing to the center of the gym.
"Okay. Talk to you guys later." I say, leaving them.
Sure enough Adam is standing by the dance floor talking to some of his soccer teammates. When he sees me, he breaks away from the group and comes to me.
"Shall I have a dance?" He asks holding out a hand.
"Of course you may, sir." I smile.
He leads me to the dance floor and we dance through two songs before Liam joins us.
"Since I don't have a date and you're the only girl I can ask for a dance. May I have one?" He asks looking between Adam and me.
"Of course." I laugh at the pleading look on Liam's face as Adam obliges and let's go of me.
When Liam and I begin to dance, I lean forward and say in his ear, "I see your ex-date is on the dance floor too."
"She said yes to me on a dare when she really had a date already." Liam grumbles and I laugh at his annoyance.
After Liam, I dance with Ben, then Ash and finally I spot Sebastian who agrees to a dance while his date chats to some friends.
When we step off the dance floor, I hand out my phone to Ben and he takes a picture of Seb and me. Seb and I are the same height now and I know he'll bypass mine in a few more months. I take the phone back from Ben and send the picture to mom and dad.
All the dancing has left me tired so I tell Adam where I'll be and then head to the place for which I specifically brought my Student ID with me.
The swimming pool has two entrances. One from the academic building and the other from the outside near the gym. The school is locked and the other entrance can only be accessed by students who are authorized to use it and I'm one of them. I scan my card at the entrance and leave the door slightly ajar in case Adam comes looking for me.
The pool lights are on and any other person would have found the silence and the sound of the water eerie but swimming pools are my comfort place. Whenever I need peace, no matter how late at night, the swimming pool at the house is my comfort place.
I sit down a bleacher to rest my feet when I hear the swimming pool door click shut. I smile when I see that it's Adam.
"Tired?" He asks, coming to sit next to me.
I shake my head, "Just needed a break but I'll be up and partying in not time."
"Take your time." He says, as I rest my head on his shoulder and he kisses it.
I have butterflies in my stomach as I slowly lift my head off his shoulder and he turns to look at me. I meet his eyes for a second before mine flutter shut and I press my lips to his. He deepens the kiss, I bend slightly backwards, supported by his arms. I press my hands to his cheeks to keep him from pulling away and he doesn't.
What I had meant to be a short kiss, turns into a make out session by the end of which his jacket is on the bleachers and my hair has come undone. I'm gasping for air as I press my forehead to his chest and he kisses the top of my head.
"Should we head back?" He asks so I pull away from his embrace and nod.
He stands up and picks up his jacket which he shrugs on as I pull the now useless pins out of my hair and run a hand through it to smooth it down.
Just as I'm about to stand up, Adam leans down and gives me one more kiss before he helps me up and we head back to the gymnasium.
