OC Tag
So now that I have a true random book I'll probably take tags more often but I'm still only going to do tags I give a shit about... so not many. I also got some more comments on the Q n A which is ongoing so I'll go check those out later. :V I know some of these questions are repeated from over there but I'll do my best to flesh out these answers so I'm not just treading old ground.
Thanks to AwsomeDragons for tagging me since she knows this is riiight up my alley.
What Inspires You To Make OCs
That's a good question? A lot of my earlier OCs were influenced by people I know, and then some of them were sort of... generic background characters. I ended up recycling those characters for so long that they took on a life of their own. More often than not, when I need new characters, it comes from ideas I think are cool that eventually sort of get wrapped around. I like certain dynamics, think certain personalities would go well with certain powers or ideas, etc. To be honest my characters kind of show up uninvited most of the time, admit themselves in, and then dictate exactly who they are, what they want, and when they want to be written (now), throw their shoes off, ruin my life a little bit, and then they either get written or fade into blissful obscurity.
Seriously though I'm sure most of them are influenced from somewhere but there are quite a few (Vivian, Sweep, Quill, Ylva and Emily, Evan) who came right the heck out of nowhere. Most of the familiarity comes from things I tacked on (determination/hope motifs) once they already existed to make them FIT.
Favorite OCs
Already answered but seriously, it changes. Weekly.
I could talk for hours about any one character, favorite or otherwise, and by the end of the talk I'd probably be in love with them again. Amalgams usually rank pretty high for this reason because I could talk about their weird fractured pseudo-psychology forever if no one stopped me. I also adore my more morally ambiguous characters and whether I think they were in the right or not tends to flip around as I get older. There's also a lot of fun to be had in looking back at my characters from when I was juuuust a bit younger. I find a lot of myself, including some unfortunate revelations, in Gale and Ashley, but there's also characters I keep coming back to just for fun, like Indy and Orca, the latter of which is so stupid on concept (she's an Idate expy) but due to fan input from a fan who nO LONGER KEEPS UP WITH MY BOOKS she's somehow wormed her way into relevance.
That's such an Orca thing to do.
Current contenders for 'favorite' include Serena, Evan, (bonus points for Serena AND Evan) Joel, Dylan, Axiom, and Marie. Omenpaw, my DC character, also ranks pretty high. What a clueless mess.
Least Favorite OCs
I used to joke about how useless Deepkit and Blossom were but then I rebuffed Blossom and I just don't care about Deepkit. Thistle and Necaris are also hard to write but it's worth it for whn they do work. Same goes for Twitch.
Characters I objectively hate:
-background characters. I don't usually have background characters I don't give a single fuck about (even Cecily from Broken Souls is important to me) but when I do, you can tell, and I don't give a siiiiiingle fuck. They're barely even characters in my mind. They're just there.
-Ylva and Crypt are both frustrating piles of garbage. They add almost nothing to their respective stories which is made worse by Ylva being the protagonist.
-Any time I tried to make a reference character in Hearts of Gold or for that matter any of my books. Pacifica is the worst thing that happened to the whole trilogy besides the ambiguous Morty/Ashley age gap (because that was retconned. I can't retcon Pacifica). Gash was originally conceived as a reference character and is so bland without it that even his concept, which looks GREAT on paper (not the writing paper but the planning paper) falls flat on its face.
-Gash. White bread God Gash.
-Any old character I used for roleplay, because their entire personality was "I'm railroading. I'm railroading the fuck out of this."
OC You Wish You Were
*rubs hands together*
Adam. I have many flaws, man, but I guarantee I could solve most of his problems just by not being Adam. Plus, I don't think it comes as a surprise to anyone that I would totally date Evan and Megan. I was working through their characters and I was like "would I date that"
"yes"
"okay that means I'm doing a good job"
That said I would not recommend dating Evan he would probably be pretty miserable to hang out with in real life due to how clingy and emotionally unstable he is but I would love to be miserable with him
Personalitywise, end of Broken Souls Ashley and Lilly are goals. Rose is beyond goals. Everyone else in the Chronaverse is either pretty meh or has some crippling personal problems that would make being them miserable because if I wrote about happy characters living happy lives then I wouldn't have any stories to write about.
Favorite OC Ship
Hope x Determination.
Okay that's cheating there's like seven ships under that umbrella depending on if you count the fandom-based books and some dubious unconfirmed canon shit.
Gale x Rena consumed my entire youth. I literally drew them in romantic situations for an entire year.
Megan x Adam x Evan. (duh)
Natrina x Aislyn. It's canon in the rewrite.
Dylan x Red. They are good for each other.
Nathan x Daniel. (Lux)
Delta x Ampere.
Rose x Sirius.
Ivy x Emotional Stability, General Welfare, and A Pretty Girl.
For non-canon ships, Shauna x Lilly. I like Bronze x Lilly just a liiittle more though.
I also crack ship so consider almost anyone from TCHF with another character from TCHF canon. KaliRed is another fun crack ship. Okay. You know what? Any two characters who hate each other in canon. Because suffering.
Also Gale x Happiness. It will never be canon.
Least Favorite OC Ship
I made Galenina out of spite but ThistleTwitch is just creepy for age reasons and compatibility reasons and clearly abusive and dangerous for Twitch reasons. I also regret Morty x Ashley and spent the last two books trying to justify it. To be honest a lot of people think I had a crush on Morty but it just happened the way everything in that series happened.
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Red x Ashley is also terrible. I think some people were joking about it once but if I had a fandom it would probably be the Bipper of fandom where it's like "no. what. what are you doing. why. for what purpose". Kali x Elle is equally awful.
Relatable
Genny, Red, and Aislyn inherited all of my problems. Genny was based heavily off of games I used to play as a kid, since I was """bossy""" and lived so far in my head that the real world was secondary.
I've talked about the Auspicia and Red before.
Gale and Evan also get a shout-out because I'm clingy and they're clingier.
That said a lot of my characters are personally relatable just because I wrote them. Several conversations or mannerisms for certain characters were taken verbatim from either myself or my friends.
Least Relatable
I don't get Spritz but I respect him even if he got taken out of the rewrite :(
(I can't answer Gash for every question but just so you know he's here too)
Most Complicated
Red, Natrina, Aislyn, and Indy are all solid candidates. Indy's a lot more than he lets on. Aislyn, Natrina, and Red are just complicated, elaborate messes concocted out of mixtures of terrible situations on top of personal problems that they have to wrestle with. Honestly, though, I could give you a detailed analysis of almost any major character of mine. I work on them all for y e a r s until I actually get to work on their books :/
Least Complicated
back at it again with the background characters. please see all of Bronze's team from Second Chances, with the potential exception of Nephthys, and uh...
a lot of my warrior OCs are super boring. Seriously I want to move over to all original works because of how boring they can get. Most OCs in Warriors books are boring. A lot of the canon cats are boring. Boring. Icestar is fucking boring as hell.
Gash "White Bread" Gash ranks pretty highly here too.
No. Icestar totally beats him. Icestar is fucking boring. Thin Ice is boring. I still get reads on Vengeance and Double Rainbow but not Thin Ice even though it has a good year on both of those. Thin Ice is a boring book. Nothing happens of consequence. Boring.
My Main OC
The Auspicia is so old that I have no friends who I have known longer than she has been in existence. In fact, she's so old that if she was a real dog she would be nearing the end of her natural lifespan. I made her as a blatant self-insert and then, upon discovering that this wasn't compelling character material, I dumped all of my personal problems with abandonment on her.
I think I would be pretty embarassed to call her a 'sona because most people's 'sonas are "me as a small quadruped: colorful, quirky, maybe a little nervous/anxious but generally okay" and the Auspicia is more along the lines of "thousands of years of war crimes, anxiety, and continuous loss of loved ones"
on that cheery note I think I'm done
Hell, I don't know who consistently reads this anymore, so let's just go out and say I tag anyon who reads this, hasn't done this yet, and really likes their OCs.
