Brotherly Quarrels
The enforcer fired on his little brother without a second thought. A wave of hazardous energy flowed from the barrels. Larry fell backward, inadvertently ducking under the attack. After rubbing the back of his head he sat up with wild eyes, "What the hell?" He watched his brother's body contort as he stood upright, "This isn't in our protocol!"
Lawrie's mouth opened wide. A blaring fuzz of robotic static came out where words were supposed to be. Plymouth chuckled from behind, "Thank you, for calling for help." The rock creature focused his efforts on his arms. The energy running into Lawrie tripled in speed. The power surging into him threatened to burst from his chest. Then it settled once again. Plymouth slowly added, "This will be fun... for me."
Lawrie ran toward his brother. Larry responded by running away, ducking and dodging after waves of energy rushed after him. All the while screaming back, "Lawrie, wake up!"
The two were copies of each other. Their speed and power were nearly identical. A fact that frustrated the rock monster. He'd been controlling his new minion like an RC car but it didn't have the motor he needed. Plymouth allowed his left arm to return to normal, partially cutting off his connection to Lawrie. He crouched down and punched into the floor.
That's when the rumbles returned. The same ones Larry had felt before. He looked down to see the shard rapidly approaching. The dodge out of the way was seamless for him. Lawrie however ran face-first into the obvious roadblock.
Larry would have laughed if the situation wasn't so dire. He did take note of Plymouth's new position. The change in his stance and how it's affected the fight. Another sharp punch into the floor alerted Larry of the next fissure. He rolled away and aimed his gun in the sky. A lobbing projectile of concentrated ticketing prowess was soaring for the rock monster.
He could see the alarm in the beast. The speed at which the rocks climbed up his shoulder to reform his gauntlets. Just as the energized roll was about to land Lawrie suddenly burst from the floor. He jumped up to body-block the attack for his new crystal master.
Larry was hard-stuck now. He'd never realized how helpful Lawrie's defensive protocols truly were in a fight. How was he supposed to trump a two-on-one? Worse than that, in this arena of Plymouth's design it was a three-man advantage.
Plymouth mumbled, "I'll just have to use you as a shield." He turned Lawrie around and punched the bot back down, "Filthy outsider." Lawrie sat up like a zombie and then turned back to Larry. With arms out wide he returned to functioning as a mechanical shield. Even with a massive fracture running down his cheek, through his chest, and along his legs.
Plymouth returned his left fist to normal, "Back to basics." Larry was once again running from tremors. He was careful not to allow himself to get trapped. Though with how the terrain had been warped there wasn't much room left to run. He kept finding himself bouncing off walls. He'd clamor up sheer cliff faces. The constant rush made his motor churn.
Plymouth could see massive ticket spools flying his way. Only for Lawrie's laser gun to intercept them like a hunter practicing with clay pigeons. He gave a hearty chuckle and sent a massive order to Lawrie's mind. The police bot writhed around until the waves of energy ceased. With both hands on his pistol, he aimed upward waiting for the next attack to come.
Plymouth focused on trapping Larry once more. The cat-and-mouse chase was getting boring. Larry's distance was making it harder to send out consecutive shards. However, Larry's movements were successfully limited by the countless attacks he's had to dodge. One massive two-pronged attack would surely work now.
The monster's hands slammed into the ground. A massive crevice formed on either side of him with no bottom in sight. It snaked ahead rapidly approaching the light-hearted bot.
Exactly what he wanted.
Larry took what looked like a deep breath (even if he didn't have lungs). Then shouted, "Order: FALL BACK!"
Larry's feet moved on their own. He started running twice as fast as before. No three times as quickly. In turn, his crystal brother came rushing forward. The bot seemed unaware of how or why this was happening but the two were face-to-face within seconds.
Once in range the two quickly dodged the other. They continued to rush in their respective directions. Plymouth was unable to react in time. The position swap was so sudden that he didn't have a chance to bring his arms out the ground. Larry was directly beside him now.
With the rock monster crouching he had to look up at an energized Larry as he ready his weapon. Then he shouted once more, "ORDER: SWAP!" In a shimmer of light, Larry's weapon changed. It was the same purple shotgun that his brother had been using to defend Plymouth. The shotgun's double barrel rested against Plymouth's head with a light hum.
Plymouth stuttered out, "H-How?"
Larry smirked over his opponent's fetal position, "Twin Magic."
Plymouth roared but he was too late. Larry pulled the trigger, turning his circle head into a collection of pebbles. At the removal of Plymouth's skull from his body there was a massive groan erupting from the walls. A miniature tremor sprouted up only to immediately halt. Then the cave went silent.
Larry let his servos settle down. He walked over to Lawrie who was sitting against a massive, spiked pillar. He scratched his head inquisitively, "What happened?" He searched his memory bank for what transpired during his power-down cycle. His eyes continued to videotape all the events which he quickly ran through. When he saw him attacking his little brother he felt his processor stall.
Larry appeared to help his brother up. The enforcer apologized profusely though Larry was quick to dismiss him. He explained, "I had it all under control. What would you do without your little brother?"
Lawrie rolled his amber eyes, "Didn't you call me because you were in trouble?"
Larry dismissed this by mentioning Lawrie's odd look, "You look good in purple." He poked his brother's chest piece and marveled at the scratches his jagged body created on his paneling. "Your body's defensive functions are 12.7% more effective."
Lawrie squinted his eyes, "You made that number up."
The two's reunion was interrupted by another shockwave. They looked around trying to see what was happening now. Lawrie's eyes went upward and he nearly short-circuited. Without thinking he dived forward, smacking his little brother to the side. Allowing a massive stalactite to nail him to the floor.
Larry's voice cracked, "LAWRIE!" He slid back over to help his brother. He was hard stuck in the ground and his body was twitching violently. Larry prepared himself to break apart the spike with as many bullets as necessary.
But Lawrie grabbed his leg. With a shaky finger, he pointed past his little brother. Larry saw that the crystal he'd cracked before was spewing out waves of energy. Lawrie must have noticed it as well. Now he was giving the final order. With a shaky voice, he mumbled, "Finish... your mission."
Larry nodded with a bit of trepidation. His run back up the mound was accentuated by falling debris and a constant rumble. It sounded like a massive wave of water rushing through a muddy pipe. It wasn't till he reached the summit that he saw what it was.
On the other side of the mound was a massive face. Its mouth had razor-sharp teeth and a still-forming face. The eyes glowed bright yellow just like the gemstone between them. And the voice that rose from it. A haunting, snarling laugh as Plymouth spoke, "NONE! SHALL! ESCAPE!"
A massive uproar of quakes signaled the hand rapidly approaching. The rocky palm was large enough to swallow Larry whole. His hands rushed to his brother's crystal gun. Then with a nerve-shattering screech, he pulled the trigger.
The jagged waves from the shotgun finally sealed the deal. The crystal broke in half, rolling down the mound and into Plymouth's gigantic mouth. The monster screamed until a massive wave of light erupted from his orifices. Then in a gargantuan explosion, his face shattered. A canyon was formed where his monstrous visage once was.
Larry was once again thrown back down. This time he landed on the back of his neck with his eyes locking his brother's. Though Lawrie seemed more focused on something past them. Larry took note of how the cave was changing. It was falling. Not like rocks falling from a mountain. But pebbles dropping into a pond. An inky black pool of liquid with no bottom.
As more of this reality crumbled so did the items around them. Lawrie's gun crumbled away to dust. The spike that had pierced him started to vanish. Then the gems comprising Lawrie's limbs started to fade to dust. The two bots held each other's hands.
Larry questioned, "He said if we won we'd be freed." The mound fell away into the rapidly approaching void.
Lawrie smiled up, "You will be freed." He placed his pistol into Larry's hand. The ticket dispenser felt oddly cold. Lawrie looked back as his torso began to vanish, "It's alright."
Larry didn't know he was programmed to cry, "No Lawrie! You-"
"SHUT UP!" He rubbed the bridge of his rocky nose, "I was never here... I understand that now." He pointed up to his brother's nose, "You're an idiot so I'll explain it to you." He lifted himself with his arms as his chest vanished, "I've been inside his head (or was he in mine?). Either way, he said he'd free you if you won. I'm certain that's what this is."
Lawrie's arm crumbled to dust making his head smack against the floor. Larry holstered his gun to pick up his brother's rock candy skull. The candy bot continued his rambling, "But he wasn't fully truthful." A massive rock crashed behind them. They were sitting on a floating platform surrounded by the void. Lawrie's neck was vanishing in Larry's palm. Yet he didn't look upset with his fate.
He continued, "When he told you he's never lost in this realm." His eyes and headpiece were gone. All that remained was his mouth and chin. Even still...
Lawrie smirked, "He lied."
All that remained in his hands were pebbles. Larry rolled a few stones through his finger and then deposited them into the black drink. It might not have been his real brother, but it was still his brother.
There was no time to mourn. The remaining rocks began to spin around him. His vision was blurred until all he could see were rapidly rushing purple stones. The void swapped to a brown and white landscape. The stones suddenly dropped around him revealing his new location.
He had returned. Plymouth kept his promise. He was exactly where he remembered. Standing beside a purple rock inside a chocolate cave with a milky aquifer and ice cream mound. Atop the mound was a statue of a gorgeous chocolate woman. Nessy, he remembered it was called.
His eyes strolled around. He saw a crater. Inside were red and orange metal scraps. Scraps he followed until he found something far worse. This wasn't a purple clone. It was the real deal. His older brother Lawrie. His skull cracked and electronics exposed.
Larry wondered if this feeling he'd gained was what humans call, puking. Then there was the distinct sound of a crack. Like bones snapping under the pressure of a hydraulic press.
He shuttered at the thought of what he was about to see. He slowly walked around the circle until it was in sight. A massive oatmeal cookie man with frosting along his shoulders and head. The monster had something in his hands.
Someone.
An ally. A pop star. A friend. Her eyes were blank. The color drained from her iris and blood visible along her lip. Her clothes drenched and dirty. Her limbs were lifeless like her pale white skin.
Otis held Melodie over the milk stream and threw her aside. Her body made a large splash as it floated for a moment. Larry hoped she'd wake up and start swimming. No. She sank. Slowly. With a few bubbles visible until it suddenly halted.
Larry wanted to scream. He wanted to call for backup. Then Otis turned his way. The cookie monster seemed disgusted at the sight of him. His raisin eyes squinted as he spat aside what looked like a glob of cream.
Larry no longer wanted help. He no longer wanted to complete his order. He unholstered his ticket gun with an angry flick.
He wanted revenge.
