Chapter One
Cecil sighed, walking along the sidewalk, avoiding the ever-growing void in the pavement. Today was the not the best day for him. His clothes were still charred from where another intern had spontaneously combusted only two feet away from him.
But then again, last night hadn't been that great either. His dark circles said too little sleep, but his fidgeting hands and bouncing legs said too much Red Bull.
The ice cream shop, with its pastel pink pink roof and the blue open sign in the door, was only a few feet away. He dodged a dead rabbit that had fallen from the sky and walked in.
God, the smell of the ice cream was enough to get his mouth watering.
He waved to Ann behind the counter. She waved back and grinned, showing her long fangs.
He sat down at the counter and closed his eyes, breathing in the smell of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry dairy. He smiled in content.
"Excuse me, sir?"
Cecil's eyes snapped open. There, right in front of him, was the most beautiful boy he had ever seen. His eyes were warm and kind, he was tall and scrawny, and his hair. Oh, his hair. It was a dark brown color, and it was curled in a way that it was perfectly placed on his head, with cowlicks flipping up.
"Uh, sir? Are you alright?"
Cecil blushed a loud, betraying red. "U-um, yeah, yeah, I'm fine..."
The boy smiled softly. "Well, sir, once you know what you want, just tell me."
Cecil looked at the menu behind the boy. He scanned through the regular flavors, looking for the scoop of the day.
He frowned, noticing that the scoop of the day had been erased and nothing had been written there.
He bit his lip. How was he going to tell the boy behind the counter? He didn't know the boy's name, and even then, he was too flustered to ask!
Ann came over, her orange pigtails fluttering in the slight breeze.
Cecil motioned to her. "Psst, Ann!" He whispered. "What's the new employee's name?"
Ann licked her lips. "His name's Carlos, hun. Why, you wanna ask him out?"
Cecil blushed and looked over Ann's shoulder. Thankfully, Carlos was helping another customer.
"Well, not right now... but maybe another time..."
Ann smiled. "Alright, I'll get him over here to meetcha." She winked, and then she was talking to Carlos, and Cecil was about to have a heart attack.
"Sir, Ann said you had a question for me. What is it?" Carlos asked Cecil.
Cecil took a deep breath. "Well, um, it appears that the scoop of the day has not been written down. What is it, if I may ask?"
Carlos whipped around to look at the menu board.
"Well, you're right! I forgot to write what it was!" Carlos laughed a little, and Cecil felt his heart jump.
"So, today's scoop is cookies and cream."
Cecil nodded. "I've never tried cookies and cream. I'll take two scoops on a cone, please."
"Alright, sir, that'll be $3.47."
Cecil handed Carlos the money, waved goodbye to Ann, and was on his way out the door when Carlos said something.
"Hey, sir, have a wonderful day!"
Cecil smiled. "You too."
