Chapter 4 ❀ Meetings
"Maaan~ [Name]'s food was great, but the Chocolate Parfait was the best!~ Thanks again, [Name]!" Mokuba grinned at you brightly as you, he and his elder brother were descending from the car, ready to enter the Kaiba Corporation headquarters building. "Anything and anytime for you, Mokuba—"
Suddenly you were blinded by a series of flashes which had the nerve to cut you off while you were showering Mokuba with supportive words. At first you didn't know what the cause of them might have been, but as soon as you heard a bunch of different peoples' voices, it became quite clear: The media. "Mr. Kaiba, a word please!"
"Is it true that you are getting married?"
"Who is this woman? Is she your fiancé?"
"Is it true that you still haven't beaten Yugi Muto in a children's card game?"
"What is this woman's social status? Is she the heiress of a—"
"Quiet, you sniveling sycophants." Was Kaiba's rude and sudden outburst that instantly silenced the entire crowd. He then used his white coat as cover in order to shield Mokuba and surprisingly you, too, from the reporters.
You had been holding a stash of papers in your hands ever since leaving the car, so you weren't of much use right now, but the three of you nonetheless managed to get inside the tall building without any problems. Everyone else was stopped by the bodyguards at the automatic doors.
"Thanks for that one." You said once you had the room to breathe properly again. The brunet dismissed your gratitude, soon asking his younger brother if he was fine. Before anyone could say anything else, Roland came storming in in your direction: "Mr. Kaiba! [Name]! Where were you?! I tried calling you so many times!"
"Your job isn't to worry about me, it's to take care of Mokuba and my schedule." Kaiba said in his signature pissed-off tone to which Roland had no choice but to remain quiet. He didn't even, actually, because now was finally his time to shine, or so you narrated it in your mind. "Exactly! Have you already forgotten about the meeting today?!"
"You mean the space elevator project one? Do I look like I would forget something like that?" Roland was actually really getting on the CEO's nerves despite having made a valid point, but perhaps that was the case because Kaiba was already frustrated enough due to the reporters outside as well as the deal with the marriage proposals. "Get moving already."
Just like he had ordered, you, Roland and even Mokuba followed him into the elevator without voicing any kind of disagreements. Once the doors had closed, a more than awkward silence filled the somewhat narrow space. It was then that you had taken your first proper glance at Kaiba today. "You're not wearing a suit today?"
"Took you long enough to notice." Seto retorted, for some reason his response not as rude as you expected it to be — or at least it didn't come off that way due to his unusually calm, almost gentle tone. You sighed and even though you pretended to be proper and composed, your eyes kept finding their way to Kaiba's abdomen where they stayed practically glued.
Usually, Kaiba would either wear a light blue button-up shirt or a black top and a long white sleeveless KaibaCorp-designed coat featuring shoulder pads and a raised studded collar over it. Right now he wore the latter which wouldn't be a problem if only his top weren't so tight. Or if he weren't so ripped. "Isn't that a bit inappropriate to wear to a meeting with important people?"
"Do you perhaps want to wipe your snot with this as well — just like you did with my bedsheets this morning?" A mischievous smirk made its way onto Kaiba's face while you did everything in your power to hide your currently boiling one with the documents you held. Why on earth would he bring that up now? There was no real connection between his awfully tight top and his bedsheets!
You weren't the only one blushing out of pure embarrassment — Roland was, too — while all Mokuba did was simply stare at his older brother a bit skeptically, wearing an unreadable expression when doing so. To put it simply, the situation had now gotten very awkward, even more than just a few seconds ago.
Once the elevator doors opened, Kaiba and you split ways with Roland and Mokuba since you and your boss needed to be in a certain meeting room right about now while the other two had other affairs to tend to. Surprisingly, you weren't even running late yet, despite having eaten brunch at home leisurely, and you actually made it right on time. Though for politeness' sake, you still excused yourself. "P-Pardon our tardiness!"
"No pardons, we're the priority here." Kaiba blurted out after you had apologized to the people who were already seated around the long table. A silent sigh escaped your lips before the brunet and you finally sat down as well, Kaiba taking a seat to your left. "Now then. I'm listening."
"Regarding the 'building an elevator into space' project..." One of the many Kaiba Corporation employees began explaining. He seemed like a young one, a man somewhat older than you and Kaiba perhaps though, but still young for someone of his rank.
You didn't remember seeing him around that much, most probably because you worked in different departments. Everything was going smoothly in the beginning. The worker made valid points and had everyone in the room nodding in agreement silently as they listened.
But after about five more minutes, everything went downhill. And it was definitely not the poor employee's fault. Not if people were to have asked you, or anyone else in the meeting hall for that matter.
"Are you telling me that we can't build an elevator into space?!" Kaiba snapped, pretty much slamming the palms of his hands against the table, causing all cups and mugs that had been placed on it to shake like leaves in the wind. "Because that sounds like something a guy who doesn't want to keep his job would say!"
"Kaiba, please." You groaned, leaning back in your chair in attempt to keep your frustrations bubbled inside of you instead of having them erupt out of you bit by bit. You were leaning back so much at some point that you almost fell off.
Situations like these really made you wonder why you worked for this man, why you even had such a high position in this man's company. Sure, the salary was pretty good, but this had to be the most tiresome job in existence.
"How dare you waste my time and even try to go against me, you mediocre—! [Name], We. Are. Leaving." The brunet CEO exclaimed as he stood up, fixing his fancy collar before approaching the door in order to quite literally get out of the room.
You quickly got up as well, but stayed in your position as you tried to talk some common sense into your boss. "Sir, we're in the midst of an important meeting that you requested! You can't just leave as you please!"
"I'm the president of this company and I'll decide what we do." Kaiba stated bluntly before gesturing you one last time to hurry up and follow him before he were to reconsider and most probably take his anger out on either you or another one of his victims.
His menacing blue eyes practically screamed that he was going to cut your salary if you disobeyed. We wouldn't want that to happen, so you gathered all your documents and rushed after the man. "I'm terribly sorry!"
"Stop apologizing all the time, it makes me look bad." Kaiba commented as soon as the two of you were out of the hall and on your way back to your office, complaining about something you regarded as simply being polite. You couldn't believe his nerve despite living through similar experiences every day. "I wouldn't have to if you stopped being so complicated!"
"Mr. Kaiba, there's someone on the phone for you." Roland said the instant the two of you set foot in the office, not allowing the CEO to even give your remark a reply. The both of you each made your ways to your respective desks, you observing Kaiba's course of action before you were to decide if you could sit down or if you had to run and take the call instead of your moody boss. "Ignore it if it's a woman."
"It is not a woman, Sir. I think." Roland retorted tensely and even began doubting what he had heard over the line for a moment. For some reason everyone in the room seemed to have started feeling on edge. Then again, their temperamental boss had just made his way back into the office, and he wasn't exactly in the best of moods. Kaiba sighed and went to sit at his desk, finally responding to the call, even if it wasn't done as politely as you would have wished to. "What is it?"
"Hii~ Kaiba Boy—" Was the only thing Kaiba needed to hear before hanging up the phone abruptly, slamming the poor object so hard that it might have broken. You witnessed the little scenario and were hoping that your boss hadn't just caused everyone in this room unnecessary trouble by doing that. "Who was that on the phone just now?... Sir?"
"That nobody Pegasus." He replied bluntly, not even raising his gaze for it to meet yours. Finally you could take a seat again and exhale properly. Since it was Maximillion Pegasus, also president of Industrial Illusions, perhaps Kaiba had made the right choice to ignore him. That long-haired individual was anything but a good moral support for Kaiba. Actually, he was more like the oil to your boss' fire.
Just when you had returned to dedicating yourself to your task — the hologram improvements — Kaiba's phone began ringing again. The brunet picked up, but soon enough ended up slamming the object back into its prior position the same way he had done just seconds ago. "Stop freaking calling me!!"
