twenty-two: butterflies
Taehyung's house was, as expected, big and beautiful. It wasn't as luxurious as Jeongguk's where it seemed like it had been pulled out of a futuristic sci-fi movie, but more traditional in a sense. More homey. At the entrance, there was a cute little park with bicycles randomly on the ground in a unorganized manner, yet it fit in the picture. Little toys rested in the (now frozen) small sand bank — Taehyung did mention he had a set of younger brothers. Their family was big, six whole people and another on the way. Even thought it was less than the Jeon's family when including their helpers, Jeongguk always felt his home to be so empty. Here, as soon as Jeongguk entered the house after Taehyung unlocked it, he felt the presence of everyone. The air was warm and filled with a delicious scent.
All eyes were on them as they froze in their positions, the father turning his head while keeping his hand steady on the pot, the mother with a sandal in her hand aimed up in the air, the two brothers with their hands tangled in their sisters hair who stopped mid-scream but mouth still wide open — they all stopped. That is until the twins released Hana from the pain and ran over to give Taehyung a hug.
Both clutched onto each of his legs while they screamed, "Hyung! Where'd you go? Noona was so mean!"
"Those devils," Hana growled from the side. "Oppa! I was supposed to be hanging out with my friends today! How could you leave me with these dev– I mean, the boys. Umm, hehe, hello, Jeongguk-oppa. How are you?"
Mrs. Kim immediately dropped the sandal, and wiped her hands on her apron before rushing over to the two boys at the door stuck in a state of shock. "Oh, Taehyung-ah, you're back! Haru, Taerin, let go of your brother. Well, who's this? A friend? I've never seen him before."
Taehyung ruffled the twins hair as they let go with a pout before running away to find something else to entertain them. The two six-year olds' moods swing faster than a rocket. The silver-head stepped in further so that he could close the door. "Yeah, mom, this is my friend. He's been over when you were at work, I haven't gotten the chance to introduce him to you. Jeon Jeongguk."
Jeongguk looked back and forth from Taehyung and his mom before realizing he should say something. "Oh! Uhm, nice to meet you!" he said, and in a quick awkward bow.
"Ah, yes, welcome. Come in, sit down," She lead the boys to the kitchen and had them sit on the stools placed with the island.
"I got your milk, dad," Taehyung said, placing the bag on the countertop. His dad said a thank you, but couldn't help notice the bandaids around his arms and face, and so did his mother.
"So, you boys had a rumble of some kind?" Mr. Kim asked, going back to the pot. "Also, Tannie went on that puppy vacation you planned. He was upset you weren't there to send him off yesterday."
"No, we were just trying to stop it. You know about the friend I told you at the hospital who was pulled into the fight. We tried to interfere and got a few hits," Taehyung lied, and boy was he good at it. It went so smoothly and causally, must have years of experience. "I'll apologize to Tannie when he comes back."
"What kind of rowdy boys were after your friend?" Mrs. Kim mumbled, before clapping her hand. "Any-who! Jeongguk, I hope you're joining us for dinner tonight. Tae's dad is making the spaghetti he's been promising us for months. It's been a while since I've had Italian food."
"Actually, could Jeongguk sleep over for a few days?" Taehyung asked.
His parents shared a questioning look before asking the usual questions of how long and if Jeongguk's parents were okay with it, as well as it being school days, but Taehyung answered accordingly saying they actually planned the sleepover to plan a school event Principal Lee had entrusted to the two. He had managed to persuade them.
"And the school uniform, isn't it a holiday?" Mr. Kim asked as the final question. "It's quite dirty too, why don't you go change? We'll set up the table while you're at it."
"Jeongguk grabbed the first clothes he could find cause he had to rush to the fight. He'll get his clothes tomorrow, I'll let him borrow mine for tonight," Taehyung said, once again speaking on behalf of Jeongguk.
"Alright then. Hurry up, and call Hana down on your way."
Taehyung nodded as he hopped off the stool, Jeongguk copying and tailing after him. He'd been silent the entire time, other then when he greeted the older's parents. Once they were out of their view, he let out the breath he seemed to have held in.
"You good?" Taehyung asked, climbing up the stairs.
"It just feels so... I don't know, weird. I've never been in a such loud house. Not that it's bad or anything. It actually feels quite nice. I like knowing the fact that there's people around me," Jeongguk trailed off, his voice becoming softer and softer.
Taehyung smiled. "I think I get what you mean."
Once they reached Taehyung's room, Jeongguk took the chance to look around. It's actually been the first time he's entered his house, only been there to pick him up or drop him off during the winter break. Taehyung had a few posters here and there, Jeongguk only recognizing one of them as it was from Overwatch. The fairy lights were a slight surprise but Jeongguk thought they'd look quite nice when they're turned on against the light gray walls. Of course, Taehyung had the usual dresser, king sized bed, a sofa, bean bag, separate washroom, a clothing rack (even thought he had a large walk-in closet it still wasn't enough), a messy study table, large whiteboard with a to-do list from the first week of school and random doodle, a corner filled with art supplies including a large easel and Bob Ross portrait, space dedicated to what Jeongguk assumes Yeontan, flat screen tv with his stand full of video games and movies— mostly Disney — and what not.
What really caught his attention was the wall dedicated to just framed paintings and drawings, all of different styles and mediums. The boy examined each one in awe, from the little boy carefully holding a newborn wrapped nicely in a light pink blanket, to the night sky dusted with the brightest stars. His heart skipped a beat and butterflies swarmed his stomach when his eyes landed on a certain red-head and silver-head around the campfire laughing like there was no tomorrow. He was quick to recognize the wall was filled with Taehyung's most precious moments.
"So, penguin onesie or sweats and tee?" the older questioned, holding up both.
Jeongguk turned rose an eyebrow at the onesie seeing that he didn't hear wrong, but didn't want to question it. "I think I'll go with the second option."
Taehyung frowned while throwing the garments for the other to catch, not so happy he couldn't see a penguin Jeongguk. The boy managed to barely catch it but thanked him once he did.
"Come down after you're done. Put your uniform on that stool, I'll put it in the laundry machine before bed," the older said before leaving his room to find his sister. Jeongguk thought back to the maid they had that would do the laundry for them. Having more than one helper screamed snobby rich family but Jeongguk was of course very thankful for them, especially Auntie Cho. The contrast of the twos lifestyle was just so different although they carried the same status.
Jeongguk stopped thinking about the matter and quickly changed. The clothes fit him well, and he was glad he had gotten an oversized shirt, his favourite kind. They were comfortable and soft, and branded too. If Jeongguk spent his money on expensive ass sofas, Taehyung's thing to splurge on was definitely clothes. He went down the stairs to see them already seated at the table. Jeongguk took the empty spot beside Taehyung and as soon as he did, everyone's eyes were on him.
"Shall we start?" Mr. Kim asked, mostly towards their guest. They all nodded in response. His kids and wife said in unison, "Thank you for the meal."
"Thank you for the meal," Jeongguk repeated after they did, wanting to fit in as much as he could. He hadn't had a family meal in a very long time, not since the incident between his parents. Even then, they would sit around quietly while his father worked on his phone and their maid served the food. The memories looked so black and white now that he recalls.
Jeongguk was snapped out his thoughts when he saw Taehyung switch their plates, as the older's had all the items being served already portioned out nicely. The red-head looked at the smiling boy. "Eat up, I swear this is the most delicious thing you'll try." Jeongguk nodded and grabbed his fork, twirled some of the pasta onto it and took a taste.
The family watched intently as his face instantly lit up. The flavours blasted through Jeongguk's mouth, and it had the boy wanting for more. As he kept on taking more and more bites at a faster pace, Mr. Kim released a satisfied laugh. "I see you're really enjoying it."
The boy stopped chewing and covered his mouth as he spoke, "Ah, yes, it's very delicious." He apologized in his mind to Auntie Cho as he placed Mr. Kim at the top on his list of best cooks.
After dinner, the Kims had a tradition of drinking a cup of hot water to just settle their meal down. While this happened, Taehyung had gone to put his uniform in the laundry, leaving Jeongguk alone. They all eyed the red-head, itching to ask him something, anything.
"So, how are your studies. What's your rank? Oh, I hope I'm not being a bother, you don't need to answer that." Mrs. Kim asked first. Hana rolled her eyes from the side, she knew her mother would ask questions related to school. Korean mothers and their grades.
"That's alright, and my studies are well. First rank in my grade actually," Jeongguk awkwardly. He's never been one to boast about his grades, and especially not to parents of his friends.
Mrs. Kim gasped as she clapped her hands. "Oh my, what a perfect child you are. Handsome, respectful, and good grades. Taehyung's ought to learn a thing or two from you. Are you in the same class?"
"Honey, stop asking him so many questions," her husband interfered, placing his hand on hers.
"No no, it's okay," Jeongguk quickly said. These people were allowing him to stay at their house, without them he would've been in that cold shed with no food. The least he could do is answer a couple of questions. "He's a grade above me, but that didn't stop your son from befriending me."
"He is quite the social butterfly, but oh, so he's your hyung!"
"Uh, yes, my h-hyung." Jeongguk doesn't call anyone hyung. He doesn't have an older brother, nor has he ever been close with an older male to call him hyung, not that he would. If you haven't noticed, Jeongguk's not very respectful to his elders, especially those who tend to piss him off. But of course he had to play to role of the well-mannered kid and go along with the lies Taehyung had fed them if he doesn't want to get kicked out.
"What's your favourite Pokémon?" one of the twins, Haru, asked. Jeongguk was still not able to recognize who was who as they were identical. They looked like tiny versions of Taehyung.
"Umm," the boy trailed on, trying to recall his memories of his Pokémon phase which didn't last too long. "Charmander?" he answered, nervous his answer might trigger the two in some way. Funny how the school's bad boy was scared of two little kids.
"Oh yes! Me too!" the other twin yelled, throwing his fist into the air as if he had just won something. "Let's go play som–"
"Maybe another time, Tiger," Taehyung said coming from behind and ruffling the boy's hair. He turned to the red-head. "Remind me to put your clothes in the dryer first thing tomorrow morning. It should be ready by the time we need to leave for school."
Jeongguk nodded. "Thanks Ta— uh, hyung."
"Hyung?" Taehyung mouthed, shocked. It's possibly the first time he's ever heard the younger call anyone hyung, and was surprised its him of all people. He saw Jeongguk's eyes travel to his smiling parents and he understood. Taehyung turned to his mother. "Jeongguk's going to be using the guest bedroom."
Her smile dropped as she placed her cup down. "Oh honey, the guest bedroom was just emptied out just a couple days ago to make room for the nursery."
Taehyung sighed. His mother was only two months pregnant but he was already stressing about having to take care of another adorable bundle that'll keep him up all night. Fingers crossed for a girl because Hana, dreading the life filled with brothers, would be more than happy to take her under her wing.
"I'll sleep in the living room then," Taehyung started.
"Or we both can just sleep in your room, it is a sleepover after all," Jeongguk suggested, and it seemed like the most sensible option. So then everyone finished their hot water and headed up to bed.
Taehyung finally let out the laugh he had been holding on for a while when they were alone in their room, rolling over his bed in the process. Jeongguk stared at the boy expressionless. While holding on to his stomach, Taehyung managed to say out, "H-Hyung?"
The younger rolled his eyes as he plopped down on the sofa. "Oh shut up."
"Say it again, please, call me hyung one more time," the silver-head pleaded, still laughing. Jeongguk flashed him a middle finger while he said quietly just in case someone heard, "Fuck off."
"Gosh, aren't you just the most respectful dongsaeng," Taehyung said sarcastically getting off of his bed. He walked over and took a seat beside Jeongguk, doing nothing but just stare at the younger's face.
"What?" Jeongguk asked, getting a little uncomfortable at his silence.
"Let's talk."
"About?"
"About everything. Tell me everything. I want to know everything," Taehyung spoke softly, his finger tracing circles on the younger's palm he took into his, which was quite calming to the red-head. "I won't force you, but know that it's better than keeping it all to yourself."
Jeongguk looked down at the dark-brown flooring for a while before quietly saying, "Okay."
"Why'd you leave home?"
The boy took a few seconds to just gather and organize his thoughts before he began explaining. "Since I was young, I knew my family wasn't the typical loving ones I would see all those movies and shows. My father is a man who shows no love unless it benefits himself as he only cares about himself. He married my mom under his father's request to show him he was ready to take over the company. My mom had no big wishes other than to be a good wife, so she forced herself to learn to love that man. My father didn't even spare a glance at her efforts. My mom raised me with love, kept me away from the dark, but after a point she just couldn't keep pretending, not even for me. She wasn't happy, no one was. Maybe that's why my dad went behind her back and found another woman." Jeongguk stopped, his throat suddenly becoming dry.
He got the courage to continue when Taehyung squeezed the hand he was holding, like he had at the hospital, with a warm smile that meant "I'm here". "It was his first love, but she came from a poor family so he was never able to be with her. The affair went out of hand and their foolishness came in the form of a child. Everything was a mess, I bet my mom knew about the affair at one point although not the child, maybe when she stopped smiling, but I didn't until I was ten."
Jeongguk took a pause. He hit down hard on his lip, stopping any tears from coming because the last thing he needed was to break down in front of Taehyung. He'd built up all these walls that made him so strong and he wasn't ready to let them be destroyed in a second. The older waited patiently wanting to let the other go at his own pace.
He continued, "Somi was eight then, and she just came and suddenly started living with us. I wasn't stupid, I listened in on the fight my parents had. Her mother died from cancer, and my father couldn't just leave Somi alone. I still remember my mom crying on the ground that day, she wouldn't stop and I started crying without knowing why. It's not that she didn't want Somi, he was her responsibility after all, just the fact that he hid it from her for all those years. He made a fool out of her, knowing goddamn well how much she loved him. But Somi came and that's when I realized my father wasn't the person he was said to be."
"But you have such a good relationship with her," Taehyung said, to which Jeongguk nodded. "Yeah, at first I didn't. I hated even looking at her. Then I realized I wasn't the only unhappy child. She just lost her mother, is living with a completely different family and house, and no one was there for her. Not even the father that brought her there. We somehow connected on it, she understood my pain and I understood hers."
Jeongguk took another pause to raise his legs close to his chest, being careful not to move the hand in Taehyung's. It felt so good to finally let all his thoughts out, and he was glad it was with the older.
"After that, I couldn't even look my father in the eye. I listened to everything he said, but at the same time I didn't. I went against him in every possible way without getting him too angered. He tried to raise the perfect little son, I wanted to be the opposite of that. After a while, he lowered his expectations and focused on just my studies. He wants me to be his successor. Not once has he asked me if that's what I wanted to become. But either way, I studied well just so that he couldn't find me useless like he thought of my mom. Now that he knows I have the skills, I love how anything I do to piss him off, he'll just have to suck it up and take it."
Taehyung couldn't help but laugh a little at that, to which Jeongguk chuckled along. "Did everything he would've looked down upon. God, I even dyed my hair red because he hates it. I fucking hate my hair this bright. I've just been so focused in doing everything he hates that's I haven't thought about what I want."
"Then let's do it!" the older said suddenly getting up, still holding the other's hand.
Jeongguk titled his head not knowing what the boy was getting at. "Do what?"
"What you like. I was thinking we start with the hair."
"My hair? Right now? We don't even have hair dye, it's so late to go buy some now. Tae, just forget it."
"You're talking to the guy who bleached and dyed his hair by himself at two in the morning, it's never too late. And I have black hair dye, bought it with the silver just in case I regretted it."
"Do you regret it?" They looked at each other for a moment, and something in the red-head's tone told Taehyung there was a lot more than just dying his hair behind that question. "No, not one bit."
•—•—•
Jeongguk sat crisscrossed on the toilet seat lid as Taehyung dangled his legs from his seat on the vanity. The younger examined his shirt stained with the black dye, they really should've planned it out better. "Are you sure you're family ain't gonna wake up?"
Taehyung nodded. "They soundproofed the walls of my bathroom cause I was singing too loud and waking up my brothers when they were really young. Sorry my inner Mariah Carey pops out when I'm in here."
Jeongguk laughed at the older's sassy tone at the end before groaning due to his hair feeling all weird. "How much longer?"
"I think we can wash it now," Taehyung said with a shrug. He hopped off and had Jeongguk sit on the ground and lean his head back into the tub. He grabbed the shower head and began washing the dye while a hand covered the boy's forehead to protect him from the water..
"Hey Tae," Jeongguk called out softly, and the other hummed back in response. "What am I going to do now? And m'not talking about the hair, about the mess called my life."
"Didn't you have a plan?" Taehyung asked, closing up the pipe and grabbing a towel. He wrapped it around Jeongguk's head and brought him back to take a seat on the toilet. He then began drying it with the towel as well as he could.
"Well, not really. I was just going to get a job and live my life, but that doesn't make sense does it?"
"Well you could get a part-time, but I suggest you focus on your studies. What do you want to do in the future?"
Jeongguk pondered on the questions for a few minutes before slumping his shoulders down. "I don't know."
"Think about it, do you not have any profession you thought would be cool? Unless you want to run your father's business."
"Anything but that." The younger took a few more moments to think about it before he was remembered of his childhood dreams. "A cop."
"Cop?"
"Yeah. Just a silly wish I had when I was young." Jeongguk laughed at himself. "The boy who hates following the rules wants to serve justie, how ironic. Whatever."
Taehyung finished drying his hair and let the towel fall around the younger's neck. "Officer Jeon. Has a nice ring to it, don't you think?" he said, and Jeongguk could only grin more.
The boy stood up and turned to the mirror as he ran his hand through his now jet black hair. They were a couple shades darker than his natural hair colour, but definitely much more easy to maintain than the red. "How does it look?" Jeongguk asked turning back to the older.
"Suits you perfectly. Yeah, just perfect, like you."
Jeongguk rolled his eyes. "Liar. Your flirting skills sucks."
Taehyung smiled wider as he grabbed the ends of the towel on the younger and pulled it towards him so their foreheads rested on each other. With his voice soft as a feather, he whispered, "I would never lie to you, Bun."
There come the butterflies again.
