twenty-six: liar liar
Taehyung twirled his pasta between his forks lazily. Dark circles were painted under his eyes, matching a sad frown, as if all the colours in him were drained out.
"Baby, is something wrong?" his mother asked, placing a hand on his forearm. "It's your favourite." Mrs. Kim had noticed he'd been feeling down for the past few days, so she requested her husband to make his famous pasta again.
"Just don't have that much of an appetite today," Taehyung replied, giving her a small forced smile. It wasn't just today, the boy's been eating the bare minimum and doesn't even like showing up to eat with his friends at lunch because he knows they'll force him to.
Mrs. Kim nodded. As she was about to say more, her husband's phone began ringing. Mr. Kim took a quick look. "It's Chisoo, remind me to call him back. Must be about the meeting in Hong Kong."
"Alright. How is he, by the way? Still moping around?"
"Chisoo? As usual. We all try to set him up on blind dates but he just won't budge. I mean, the woman is probably married with kids. She left him because her parents said so, why does he still love her?"
Taehyung sighed, hoping he didn't end up like his father's friend in his last year of high school. He really needed feeling all depressed. He lost Jeongguk, he needed to accept it and move on.
She continued, "Well Boram was a very pretty woman. He looked into her bright eyes once, and baam, guy's fallen. Her smile was quite unique too."
Mr. Kim raised a brow. "Her smile?"
"Yeah, it was like the boy Taehyung had over. Oh right, sweetie, how's Jeongguk doing?"
"Huh?" Taehyung looked up being caught off guard. His parents hadn't mentioned anything about Jeongguk since the day he left. Since then, a week had passed and Taehyung had been trying his hardest to forget about him. The feelings he had for him just wouldn't go away. Well of course, feelings weren't as simple as taking down the paintings of them from his wall.
He gulped, not wanting to think of how the boy might be doing in Hong Kong. "He's okay," Taehyung answered simply. "Dad, how's the thing between you and Jeon's Incorporation?"
His dad looked at him questionably. Taehyung has never once been interested in his father's business or discussed on any of his matters. "Well, we came to somewhat of an agreement. Not as before, but things are looking good. Now that you say, did you know Jeongguk was his son? Gosh I can't believe I talked about his father in front of him like that, he must've felt so uncomfortable. I hope he didn't leave because of that."
"His father is Mr. Jeon?" Mrs. Kim asked. "The man was nothing like his son when we met. Did you know about this Tae?"
Taehyung put down his fork and sat up from his chair. "I'm feeling a little sick. Please excuse me." Without letting his parents spill out their concerns, he left the dinner table and ran up to his room, immediately falling on his bed. He buried his head into the pillow to muffle out his cries. The last thing he needed right now was for his mom or dad to find him crying over a boy. Then he'd also have to come out and Taehyung was just not ready for that, and not like this.
With shaking hands, he took a hold of his phone and turned in on. The bright light irritated his eyes before it calmed down. Messages from his friends started rolling in one by one, but a series of text caught his attention, one that he knew he needed to reply.

Taehyung took in a deep breath then began typing. He told her everything. Taehyung having feelings for Jeongguk, him wanting to rebel, Mr. Jeon taking this to Mr. Kim, meeting Taehyung, denying his offer so that Jeongguk wouldn't think he was in the control of his father, pretending to hook up with some girl, Jeongguk's drunken behaviour — everything. And god did it feel so good to let it all out to someone.

Taehyung locked his phone and threw it on his bed. He stood up, wiping away his tears and checking how puffy and red his eyes were. Not too much, definitely not enough to conclude he was crying. He practiced breathing in and out, before nodding to himself in the mirror and leaving his room. Taehyung began making his way down and saw it was just his mother and father on the couch with their cup of hot water. His siblings must already be in bed. He let out a sigh of relief and approached them.
"Oh, honey. How are you feeling?" his mother asked as she saw him first.
Forget what he thought earlier, it was definitely now or never.
"I'm gay."
Silence. That's all their was. And blinking. A minute passed and Mr. Kim finally manages to mutter out a word. "Oh. Well that's wonderful. And that alright. I mean, there's nothing wrong. We accept you no matter what. Well, how long have you been...?"
"For a while now."
He nodded. His mother seemed to finally snap out of her trance and resume to her motherly actions. "Oh baby, I'm so happy for you. Love who you want, sweetie. I'm glad you told us," she said with a wide smile. She put down her mug and extended her arm for Taehyung to grab. He took it and was immediately engulfed in a warm hug, one that which his father joined in on immediately. Things went exactly as Taehyung expected. He knew how loving his parents were, but he did imagine this scene to be longer and they would talk further about it, but Taehyung really didn't have the time.
"Thanks, mom, dad," he took a seat, preparing himself to drop the next news, or more so request. "I love, well like, a boy."
Their eyes widened. They looked at each other before turning back to their son. "Alright."
"And I think this boy might like me back, but before I could even know, I hurt him. I did something I shouldn't have. So now he's in Hong Kong to get away from me."
"Hong Kong? Okay, there's a lot more to this love story of yours," his mother said.
"Long story and I promise I'll tell you about it in detail but right now I need to apologize for what I've done, tell him I didn't mean it."
They nodded again, not exactly knowing where everything was going.
"Of course I can't call him so..."
"So?" they both echoed.
Taehyung got off the couch, kneeled and put his head down. "Please let me go to Hong Kong!"
"Alright."
"Please! Just for one day! All I need is to– wait what?" Taehyung looked up to see his parents smiling. He really didn't think his parents were that easygoing, just asking for something as absurd as that, he had prepared for the worse: the look. "W-What do you mean alright?"
"Get up, child." Taehyung blinked a couple time before standing up and sitting back on the couch.
His parents shared a loving look. "While we were dating secretly, your mother had received an amazing opportunity. A two-year contract as the director of our branch in Canada. Your mother of course did not want to go, she didn't want to leave her life in Korea behind, meaning me, but I just couldn't watch her throw out her career like that."
"What your father didn't understand was that I was happy with where I already was, and with him. I married an idiot, honestly."
Taehyung laughed lightly for the first time in a while. He always loved hearing his parents life before marriage stories, this one being one of the many he's not yet heard.
"An idiot I was. So, as I was her boss, I started yelling at her for the smallest mistakes. I then also broke up with her–"
"With the dumb excuse me not being able to reach his high status."
"Sorry, Honey," Mr. Kim whispered, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. "Made her super mad that she just packed her bags and left to Canada without even telling me."
"Thank god he realized how stupid his plan was. He couldn't even go through with it for a week. He hopped on the next flight and came running to me."
"That's because you told your mom life in Canada was miserable and that the food sucked."
Mrs. Kim nodded. "Except for the poutine. And maple syrup, could honestly chug a whole bottle. Oh and they've got these cute little things called TimBits, which is just perfection. Which I'm really starting to crave right now. Don't get me started with the–"
Seeing his wife was getting side tracked, Mr. Kim decided to finish it off. "Anyways, point is, if you love someone, don't let them go. You never know what'll happen. We didn't know we would be married and happy with four – soon five – kids that day. I know you're still a high school student but you never know where life can take you. I don't want you to be old and lonely and regret not being able to talk to him."
"Yeah. So I can go to Hong Kong?"
"Not yet. I have a meeting there in two days. Luckily it's the weekend. Come with me then, but we return Monday morning," his father said.
Taehyung beamed in joy, leaping at both his parents to give them a tight hug while chanting a million thank you's. He felt so grateful to have such wonderful parents. If it had been anyone else, they would've labeled their child insane because homosexuality is a disease. When he had finally let go of them, he ran back up to his room to start packing early. Mr. and Mrs. Kim watched with a pleasant smile on their face.
"He really reminds me of you," she started. Her husband smiled, snaking an arm around her while placing the other softly on her belly.
"I wonder who this boy is."
Mrs. Kim grinned. "Oh, I've got a hunch."

Somi entered the room silently. Mrs. Jeon sat up on her bed with a book in hand. She approached her slowly. "Mrs. J– I mean, m-mom." The woman looked up and smiled. Marking her page, she set the book down on her bedside desk. "Yes, darling? Come here, sit down."
Somi hesitantly took a seat. She bit her bottom lip, cursing at herself for not planning what to say before coming in. Somi took in a deep breath. "Let's leave."
"Hmm?"
"Let's leave, leave from here, from my dad. Like Jeongguk, let's leave."
Mrs. Jeon's blinked a couple times before bringing back that fake smile of hers. "What are you talking about, Somi-ah?"
"You deserve better. Better than that lying, cheating, selfish man. You don't need him, mom, you'd be so much better without him. You're not alone, you have me and Jeongguk." Somi paused to get closer and take a hold of her hand. "Please, mom. I'm feel scared every second I'm here, a dad shouldn't make me feel that way."
Mrs. Jeon squeezed her hand. "You know I can't do that. Even if I don't need your father, he needs me."
"For your money!" Somi yelled, but quickly quieted down. Mr. Jeon wasn't home, but he's got ears everywhere. "Don't let him take advantage of you like that."
Mrs. Jeon looked down, trying to blink back the tears that began forming. "I c-can't."
"Do you really love a man who doesn't love you back?"
She sighed. "I'm doing what's best for this family."
"With all due respects, you're really not, mom. He forced Jeongguk to go to Hong Kong by blackmailing his friend, and soon will force him to take over the family business, probably me as well. He doesn't care about this family, he only cares about himself. He honestly should've just married his dumb company. He's not worthy of love."
"W-What do you want me to do?" Mrs. Jeon tried, she really did, but it felt as if all the pain she had been enduring all these years just accumulated and this was her breaking point. She began sobbing, covering her face with her hands. Seeing the woman cry, Somi couldn't help but spill tears of her own. She hugged her tightly, as she quietly said, "Get a divorce. Move out. With me, Jeongguk as well. I'm here for you. We can be happy, a family. Do it for your kids, for yourself. P-Please, mom?"
She hugged Somi tighter, nodding against her shoulder still crying. Mrs. Jeon always felt trapped, but she had made no move to escape. She was too afraid, of her husband, her parents, of everyone. So she kept everything to herself seeing that no one could do anything to help. To know she's got two amazing children there for her with all their love and support, it's only fair she complied to both of their wishes. She deserves a happy ending too.
