nine: paintings and detentions
"So you want me to fucking paint?" Jeongguk questioned as he held the dry paint brush in hand with slight confusion.
Taehyung nodded quite enthusiastically. "Pick whatever colour you want, and just paint."
The red-head looked down at his options. There was only four buckets: blue, black, blue, and finally black.
"Nice variety. So, what do I paint?" Jeongguk asked, dipping his paint lightly in one of the the black cans.
"Literally anything you want."
He nodded. After letting the excess paint drip off, Jeongguk brought the brush to the large canvas Taehyung had set on on a easel, and put a random stroke directly in the middle. The brush made a satisfying sound as it gliding across. Jeongguk looked back at the excited older. "That's it?"
"Of course not!" Taehyung picked up a brush of his own a dipped in a blue paint can, then made a stroke right beside Jeongguk's.
"Now some artist would leave it just like that, but it would be to make some kind of statement. Right now we're just experimenting so you can do whatever," the older explained.
Jeongguk nodded. He dipped his paint brush in the black again, now adding a third stroke to the canvas right next to the blue. Taehyung did the same except he glided his brush over one of the black lines.
"Hey! You crossed over my line!"
Taehyung looked back at the younger. "Uhm, yeah?"
Jeongguk dipped his brush in the black paint, not even bothering to let the excess drip off, and quickly slapped it on the canvas over the blue. "There, now there's more black."
"Do you have to be competitive over everything?"
"It's how I was raised."
The two began splashing on more and more paint, and soon the canvas displayed a dark shade of blue, nearly black. Knowing the tricks of the paint, Taehyung quickly wiped of all the paint as they still haven't dried, leaving the canvas to be a light tint of the colour, just enough for the new blue colour to takeover.
"You're cheating!" Jeongguk yelled, almost whining. He picked up the still paint filled brush and instead of painting on the canvas, he made a line across Taehyung's cheeks.
The older let out a short chuckle. "Oh you did not just do that."
"What're you gonna do about it, Softie?"
Just as expected, Taehyung splattered a nice blue stroke across the younger's forehead. So it began. The two had found the flicking method much more effective of carrying out paint. That is until Taehyung dropped the brush and grabbed the whole can, to which Jeongguk copied.
"Put the paint down, Softie."
"You first. And I told you stop calling me Softie."
"Softie, Softie, Softie, Softie, Softie!"
"I swear to god, say Softie one more time! I have a can full of paint and I'm not afraid to use it!"
"So—"
"What in the world is happening here? You two, put the damn paint down!" Mrs. Chung came in screaming.
The two boys looked at the fuming lady, before carefully putting the cans down.
"Kim Taehyung! Being the vice-president of the art club and having access to all these great material is a privilege! God, this is not even the first time you started a paint fight!"
"This ain't you're first?" the red-head questioned, quite amused.
"And you, Mr. Jeon, are no better! Both of you, detention after school! Now clean this up if you don't want me to call home." Mrs. Chung was probably one of the most easy going teachers, but when someone messed with her classroom or art, there was no end to what she can do.
The boys got to work quickly. The nice ones are always the scariest when mad. Although, they couldn't help but bicker over who should clean what.
"Look! You used black and I used blue! You clean the black paint, and I clean up the blue! Simple!" Taehyung explained.
"You're just tryna make me clean up all the blue that got blended with black! You think I'm blind?" The younger answered back.
"Okay, how about we play Rock Paper Scissors, and the one who looses has to clean up all dark shades," the older suggested, to which the latter agreed. They played three rounds in total, Taehyung won the first, and he may have been a little too cocky about it because karma attacked him when Jeongguk won the next two. The older only rolled his eyes, but remained true to his words.
Jeongguk finished cleaning up much faster, but surprisingly he didn't leave. He waited for Taehyung to finish as well, which took almost the entirety of what was left of lunch break.
"Fuck, never having a paint fight again!" Taehyung yelled, getting up and throwing the dirty papers away. Out of nowhere, Taehyung's face lit up. Jeongguk watched in confusion as the boy scattered around the room looking for something.
"Here it is!" Taehyung came back with a white marker. He went over the the canvas, and signed his name at the bottom right corner. Taehyung then turned back, stretching out his arm to give the marker to the younger.
"Yeah, no thanks."
"Oh c'mon, I can't take all the credits when it was a team effort!"
Jeongguk rolled his eyes, before getting up from the desk he used as seat, and taking ahold of the white marker. He quickly signed his beside Taehyung in a nice cursive.
"Damn, your signature is so neat."
"Had to get it approved by my dad first, of course it's neat."
Taehyung didn't know quite what to say, so he just nodded. Right on time, the bell rang, signalling students they had five minute to get to class before the final bell rang.
"See you after school?" Taehyung asked.
"Huh?"
"Detention, you idiot!"
"Maybe."
The older gave one last glare before dashing through the door not wanting to be late. Jeongguk only shook his head, but his eyes caught back to the canvas. He stared at it for a little bit, his lips curved up into a smile. The canvas was quite solid, not much texture or shading, but Jeongguk saw a lot more. The red-head was snapped out his trance when the final bell rang. "Shit." Maybe the teacher will take pity on him, but that was quite impossible knowing the whole school staff absolutely despised Jeon Jeongguk.
They hated that he was always such a disruption to the class but is the one with all the top grades. They suspected he's cheated many times before, but couldn't get any evidence even from close observations and pop quizzes. Jeongguk was just a genius, and his tutors deserved all the credit. Jeongguk shook the thoughts out of his head and wondered if he should skip or not, but there wasn't much he could do, so he began making way to class.

"Class 2, Jeon Jeongguk! Is he here?" the boy yelled as he popped into the third class in his search. Taehyung somehow managed to convince his teacher, who was a substitute today, to let him go early. He had told the poor guy that his usual teacher would let them leave early if all class work his done, to which he completely believed with the aid of the rest of the sly class.
The class he had now popped into gave a different reaction from the other classes that stared in both confusion and awe that the Kim Taehyung has not only came to their class, but it also looking for the notorious bad boy. The students all looked back, and Taehyung followed his gaze to see Jeongguk and a couple of his other friends stop whatever foolishness they were doing to see who's calling out for him.
"Ah! I've found you! Now come on! Class is dismissed, we've got places to be."
"What do you want with him?" one of the more bravest of the bunch of youngers in Jeongguk's gang asked.
"Pipe it down, Ginger," Taehyung warned, not knowing the name of the boy and replacing it with his hair colour.
His dark aura suddenly became cute, as he lifted his voice high when he said, "now come on, Ggukkie! You can't make wait forever!"
The younger couldn't help but smile at the older's dumb act. He shook his head before rising from his seat, giving a quick bye to his shocked friends, and went after the brunet.
"Why're you here, Softie?" Jeongguk asked, leaning against the frame of the door. Everyone in both the classroom and halls listened to their conversation attentively, wanting to see what kind of gossip they can suck out it.
"Stop calling me Softie, Jeon. I've warned you enough times. And detention, remember."
"Eh, I don't feel like going. Sign in for me, would you?"
"Fat chance you think I'm gonna do something like that for you. Now—" Taehyung stopped to go down low to his ears so that no one else could hear his next words. "—follow me like a good boy, or be dragged there like my bitch. The choice is yours."
The older's sudden deep voice sent shivers down Jeongguk's spine, and he absolutely hated that a softie like Taehyung could have that effect on him. Frustrated, Jeongguk poked the side of his cheeks with his tongue before deciding. "Let's go."
Taehyung smiled wide as he lead the way to the detention class. Of course he wasn't excited about going to detention, but he was quite pleased with himself for getting the red-head to go with him. He was sure that Jeongguk wouldn't come, so to avoid that, he went and found the boy himself.
The detention room was empty, other than the teacher there —who was as usual, ignoring the world with his earbuds plugged in and crossword puzzle. They walked over to the list they had to sign into, and quickly initialled beside their names.
"We signed our names, let just go," Jeongguk began as he headed for the door.
"Tsk tsk, we ain't going anywhere, now sit your ass down for just an hour. I'll treat you to some tteokbokki."
"...Whatever." Jeongguk took a seat all the way at the back, far from the one Taehyung picked. He took out his phone to text the boys that he'll be a little late. The red-head couldn't help but notice the quick peaks Taehyung would take of the boy as he did some sort of school work or such.
"Listen boys, don't cause any troubles. I'll be back." Mr. Lee was an old man, and often took restroom breaks, and those breaks could last anywhere from fifteen minutes to the rest of the detention time period.
"Can we leave now, Mr. Lee probably won't even come back," Jeongguk asked. "At least let me leave."
"No can do, Jeon!"
"Fuck you." The younger stood up and walked over to Taehyung. "M'not you're little pet, Softie."
"What did I tell you about calling me that?" the brunet basically growled. The aura in the room completely changed.
"Oh quit it. You and I both know that no matter how fucking menacing you act, your nothing but a little Sof—"
Jeongguk was cut off as he was pushed back forcefully into a chair. Taehyung places one hand on the desk, and the other on the chair, trapping the boy.
"You think I'm acting, huh?" the older began. Jeongguk remained speechless. He wasn't able to make words for some odd reason, and his heart was strangely jumping metres. Was he scared? No, Jeon Jeongguk wasn't scared of anything. Taehyung leaned in closer, their noses only centimetres apart as he repeated, "Huh? Cat got your tongue, Jeon?"
Surprisingly, the younger didn't say a word. He just stared back, a slight look of confusion. His eyes weren't like the usual 'I fucking hate everybody' look. They were big, and doe-like, which threw Taehyung quite off. He was expecting some intense profanity back, but instead he's got this cute little boy looking up at him. The older couldn't help but look away, suddenly turning into a nervous mess.
"Uhm, there's only, like, twenty minutes left. Just stay," he managed to say, as he sat back down.
It took a few seconds for the younger to process that words were being said. "Uh, yeah, umm, whatever." Jeongguk cursed at himself internally. He was so confused why he froze up like that, why he didn't just push him away, but instead wanted to keep staring at him.
The two kept silent, not even daring to look at each other, both trying to figure what in the world just happened. The room was so quiet and still, they were scared the other would hear how fast their heart was still beating.
Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up! "Shut up!"
"Huh?" Taehyung whipped his head to look at the distressed boy. "Did you say something?"
"No!" Jeongguk quickly lied. He didn't realize he was saying it so much in his head, the words decided to escape. "Nothing at all."
Nothing. Right. It's nothing.
