Chapter Twenty
~Inari's POV~
I begrudgingly let Aizawa assist me with making dinner. It took the boys an alarming amount of time to realize we had returned to the apartment though because of it we did get to see some amusing VR play. Kaminari nearly took Hitoshi's head off during one of the songs in freestyle mode and caused his VR helmet to shift. Only then did they realize we were there when Hitoshi took off his helmet so he could readjust it and spotted us in the kitchen as I was setting food on the table. Honestly I was a bit worried about their sense of perception and concerned about their sense of smell as I put A LOT of spices in the burgers and neither of them seemed to notice while I was cooking.
Dinner was a bit awkward, the boys weren't quite sure how to act with one of their teachers at the table. Aizawa tactlessly avoided their questions about his black eye using VERY obvious conversational misdirection tactics that no one was fooled by. Halfway through dinner, Karen barreled through the door in her attempt at a 'skimpy' outfit with camera in hand, blinded all of us as she took a hilarious awkward family photo of us all sitting at the dinner table eating. I'd since blown it up and framed it in the living room. Hitoshi had a hilarious deadpan expression on his face and was throwing me a side eye that very clearly screamed 'what did you do, now?', Denki was half standing half sitting as he'd partially jumped out of his seat and the tray with buns on it that he'd been holding was caught in mid fall about to topple all over Hitoshi, Aizawa was mid bite of a burger and also throwing me a side eye that said 'this is your fault' and 'what have I gotten myself into?' and I was mid cackle. It was the most perfect photo in existence and the first time I truly felt grateful to Karen for her nosiness. She'd left right after the photo as she realized there was no orgy going on in the apartment. Honestly I wasn't sure if she was happy or let down by the lack of orgy happening.
It had been about a week since my awkward coffee date/ teenager rescue/ dinner date with Aizawa and I hadn't really heard from him since. He'd called me once to ask me if I was sure the boys were studying together as I had said since he hadn't noticed an improvement in Kaminari's grades. I don't remember if I actually responded to him, I was too busy laughing as I realized he had missed what I had thought was a very obvious hint at the boys' relationship and took it literally that they were actually studying and not studying.
After Aizawa had left on Sunday and the boys retreated to their room, Kaminari nearly killed me with a taser hug after finding his little welcome to the family pikachu collection. It took about a minute to make sure I wasn't having a heart attack then another five minutes to calm him down as he had turned himself into a crying mess. Afterwards, Kaminari seemed to adjust perfectly to life in the Shinso household. Hitoshi pretended he was annoyed overall as Kaminari liked to join me in shenanigans and hilarity.
Saturday Night, as I was heading off to meet with the secretive client who'd insisted they remain anonymous until our appointment and that we met outside of the club, I headed to the living room to find the boys. They were playing another video game that seemed insanely stressful as it appeared the object of the game was for them to move furniture but they were horribly clumsy and everything was breaking. They were laughing and yelling at one another constantly, it was quite amusing.
They looked up as I stepped into the living room in one of my burlesque outfits. It was less revealing than most of my work outfits and in a style that I really liked in black with varying shades of purple accents. Hitoshi frowned slightly, "I thought you had tonight off?"
"I do, mostly, I'm just meeting with one client, it shouldn't take long." I reassured him. "I should be back in time to change so we can go to that midnight movie you two wanted to see."
"You're going to get roped into staying and covering for someone because you can't listen to anyone's sob story and just walk away." Hitoshi shot at me.
"I'm not even going to the club so that absolutely won't happen." I rolled my eyes at him.
They exchanged wary looks with one another before replying in freaky unison, "you're meeting them outside of the club?"
"That's a cute and really freaky trick, stop that." I grumbled.
Hitoshi threw me a dark look, "it's pretty shady for someone to insist they meet you outside of the club."
I shrugged, "it happens, some people just don't want to be seen in a strip club, because they care about their image and apparently strip clubs are bad for someone's image." I rolled my eyes. "It's stupid, but it's also not that big of a deal and half the time I get free starbucks out of it." I smiled.
"Whatever." Hitoshi sighed.
"Be safe." Kaminari piped up with a smile.
I ruffled their hair affectionately and laughed as Hitoshi swatted at me and Kaminari grinned with full golden retriever energy. "Also, Aizawa called about your grades." I poked the top of Kaminari's head, "if you two could do me a favor and try to work in some ACTUAL studying into your studying time that would be great."
They both blushed and awkwardly looked away from me causing me to laugh.
"Love you kids, have fun, I'll be home soonish." I gave them both a kiss on the cheek and headed for the door.
Hitoshi grumbled something back in typical moody teen fashion.
Kaminari replied with pure golden retriever energy, "love you too, Nee-san."
I laughed and exited the apartment to find a man who appeared to be a year or two my senior looking nervously at a sticky note in his hand. It appeared to be an address, but the ink was a bit smudged. "Lost?" I asked curiously.
"Uh, sorry. I have a feeling this is not the right apartment number." He blushed and averted his gaze, seeming uncomfortable by the amount of cleavage that was revealed by my corseted top.
"I've been here awhile, who might you be looking for?" I asked with a smile hoping to calm him down, he seemed really nervous.
"Um, his name is Kazuma." He replied nervously.
"First date?" I mused.
"Y-yeah." He blushed.
"That one." I pointed at Kazuma's door. "Pro tip for your second date, he loves wine, any and all kinds, try to find one that pairs with whatever he makes for your second date." I gave the nervous man a pat on the shoulder, "and relax."
He blushed again, "ah-, you must be Inari. He speaks so highly of you whenever we talk. Thank you so much."
I smiled, touched that Kazuma spoke about me with his prospective dates, "he's too kind. Enjoy your date, you're in for a real treat, Kazuma is an amazing cook." I waved farewell and headed for the elevator.
When I reached the front desk I found the landlord and facilities manager slumped over the front desk laughing hysterically. I paused at the front desk, "dare I ask what you two morons are in stitches over?"
"Karen." They both wheezed.
"I have five minutes to spare, make it quick." I smirked.
"Where do I begin? She has some suggestions for how we run the building. Something about anyone reporting for an orgy must sign in with someone for approval to be admitted into the building." The facilities manager began since the landlord appeared to be incapable of breathing from laughing so hard.
"Oh god. Please tell me she volunteered to be the sole approver." I grinned.
They both nodded and the landlord collapsed to the floor wheezing like some kind of dying animal. The sound was both amusing and alarming and only sent the facilities manager further into hysterics.
"You both suck at your jobs, get back to work." I rolled my eyes and left the building while choking on a laugh.
I checked my phone to double check the location my client had sent. It was in an alley in a very quiet part of town. It was a business district so it was usually empty after 8pm daily, which meant there would be no one around. It did make me a bit nervous, though I'd met with some pretty shady people before and so far it had all worked out okay. Some of my clients in the past had been villains and they still behaved themselves, since most of my clients reached out to me because they were dealing with something they didn't know how to overcome because they didn't have the right tools.
As a precaution I readied my location tracking feature on my phone so I could send it to someone quickly if I needed to, though I had no idea who I'd send it to if I needed to use it. The business district was really dark at night since most of the buildings turned their lights off when they closed up for the day. The street lights around the business district seemed dimmer than most lights which was a bit concerning.
My heart started to race as I headed for the alley I was supposed to meet my client. Why would they want to meet here of all places? I was hoping it was just some workaholic CEO who worked in one of the surrounding buildings and just didn't want to be away from his office for too long. I scanned the alley, it was empty. Nervously, I waited in the middle of the alley frequently scanning both ends of the alley so I could see when my client arrived.
Three minutes after our meeting time, something heavy crashed onto the ground behind me and there was a flare of light emanating from whatever had fallen. I jumped and spun around in a panic as my heart leapt into the back of my throat. My shock immediately turned to disappointment as I spotted a familiar muscular man with flaming facial hair, Endeavor.
"Quirk police?" I frowned, "you're the oh so secretive and shady client?"
He scowled at me, "and I'm to remain a secret."
"Yeah yeah, client confidentiality, you're good. Doesn't make me any more thrilled to be in your presence." I retorted. "Any particular reason we had to meet in a fucking murder alley? I've had villain clients that had the decency to take me to a Starbucks, hero biz not doing that great or you just a tightwad?"
"Villain clients?" He inclined a brow.
"Client confidentiality." I reminded him. "So, don't ask."
His scowl turned even more hostile.
"So...what can I do for you? I highly recommend a personality adjustment." I smiled sweetly.
"I have some questions first. Consider this a consultation." He growled.
"Fine, fine. Whatever. Just a heads up, consultations tend to go more smoothly when one is at a table, bonus points when there's also coffee available." I folded my arms in front of me before waiting for him to continue with his questions. It took every ounce of willpower I had not to tap my foot impatiently.
"Your quirk, it's some form of mind control?" He asked.
I nodded.
"You can make people forget things?" He pondered.
I nodded again, growing a little uneasy as his tone seemed to shift.
"How many people can you target at once?"
I frowned. "Let me stop you right there, Number Two...I'm a little concerned I'm having this conversation with a grown ass adult, even more concerned when said adult is in a position of authority but here we are...there's this crazy concept, I'm not sure if you've heard of it, it's called consent. My services are for CONSENTING ADULTS ONLY." I scowled.
"Your services are for what I pay you for." He growled threateningly.
"We're done here." I turned on my heel and walked away.
He caught me by the arm, his gloved hand encircling my upper arm. A soft hiss of pain escaped me as he tightened his hold on my arm, halting me. I felt several capillaries in my arm rupture beneath his iron grip as he wrenched me around to face him.
I was suddenly transported back home in a traumatic memory of my parents. Before Hitoshi had been born, when I had no one, when there was nothing in my life to live for, when there was no one to protect me and no one for me to protect. I suddenly felt afraid. My heart hammered in my chest and I clutched my phone tightly in my free hand, my finger hovering over the share location button. Who was safe? No one had ever made me feel safe...no that wasn't true...there was one person. An image of Aizawa flashed across my mind's eye and without thinking I shared my location to Aizawa.
My phone made a faint 'whoosh' type sound as the message was sent. Endeavor scowled down at me, his gaze flickering over to my phone. "What was that?" He growled menacingly.
"Just my location being shared with another Pro Hero." I smirked, but my smirk started to falter as I realized he didn't appear shaken by this, just angry.
His grip tightened around my arm. I heard a faint cracking sound and feared my arm had just been fractured before he roughly shoved me against the brick wall of the office building whose alley we were in. My back hit the wall first, I felt the rough texture of the brick break my skin, scraping up my back before the back of my head collided into it with enough force I saw an explosion of stars behind my eyelids. I didn't give him the satisfaction of voicing my pain and grit my teeth. My phone slipped from my grasp and hit the ground.
Endeavor stepped forward. There was a crunch and a weird sizzle as his flaming boot stepped on my phone. My body tensed. I wanted to flinch but I wouldn't allow myself. Once he was within reach I reached upward to try and touch the only patch of revealed skin on his costume, his face. He reacted quickly, grabbing my wrist in a death grip and knocking it back against the wall. I felt the rough brick scrape across the back of my hand. The stinging pain from the scrapes was the only thing keeping me present.
"You will do what I pay you to do." He growled as he lowered his face so it was in my face so he could appear more threatening. "And you're not going to tell a soul, or I'll personally see to it that your brother will never make it in this industry."
I quickly slapped my hand to his face ignoring the searing pain as my hand began to burn as it came into contact with the flames across his face. He punched me in the gut but I managed to hang on and activated my quirk. "You're a piece of shit. You will never threaten me or my brother ever again." The pain in my hand was excruciating but I held on, "I want you to take a good hard look at your life and solve your own damn problems. Now get the fuck away from me and leave me the hell alone!" I screamed the last part and pulled my hand away with a cry of pain. There was a sickening squish sound as I wrenched my hand back and I realized most of the skin on my hand had burned away revealing a gory bloody mess of charred flesh.
Endeavor walked away from me in a daze and I dropped to my knees.
