Chapter Seven
~Inari's POV~
The night before Hitoshi was going to start at UA, I cooked all of his favorite foods for dinner. School had always been tough for him. Kids his own age were cruel and often picked on him or left him out of things because they thought his quirk was creepy. He always tried to be strong about it, never wanting me to catch on when he was having a hard time. As a result, he was always anxious about the first day of school.
"Tomorrow's going to be great. It's a school for heroes and everyone who goes there wants to be a hero or work with heroes so there's probably way less assholes than all your other schools." I tried to reassure him as we sat down for dinner.
"Nee-san, you don't need to give me a pep talk every year." Hitoshi sighed as he picked at the food on his plate, moving it around but not really eating anything. He was nervous about tomorrow.
"I know I don't have to, but I want to. This year is going to be great! I can feel it. You're going to make some friends this year and who knows, maybe even find yourself a boyfriend." I winked.
He grumbled something partially coherent in response, flustered by my doting. His expression was grim as he continued moving things around on his plate. "I'm not in the hero course...I probably won't even be able to become a hero..."
"Why would you think that? There isn't a rule that says you have to be in hero classes to become a hero, you just have to pass your hero license. It's like driving, sure the kids that go to the school get the advantage but as long as you pass the test for your license, who cares?" I attempted to cheer him up.
"My quirk isn't suited for it..." He grumbled self-dejectedly.
"What?! You're insane, your quirk is perfect, you trick someone into responding to you and you can make them turn themselves in. That's amazing, think of all the collateral damage you can avoid. Way better than those flashy heroes that blow shit up and make a mess. You will be the most amazing hero someday. I know it." I reached across the table and grabbed his hand in mine, halting his current construction of some kind of weird food volcano.
"Even your quirk is better suited to being a hero, you can just touch someone and brainwash them." He grumbled.
"Which does me no good if I can't make contact, you can do things from a distance. That's amazing and much more versatile. Also I would make a terrible hero; they'd just call me the liability." I frowned.
Hitoshi's lips quirked slightly, an amused smirk slowly peeking out. "You would definitely be an HR liability."
"A thousand percent." I agreed.
He smiled. "Thanks for believing in me, Nee-san."
"I will always believe in you and I will forever be your biggest fan." I smiled.
"I'm definitely going to have the most obnoxious fan club if you're the one calling the shots." He chuckled.
"For sure." I grinned.
My cell phone started vibrating so spastically it fell off the counter and kept skidding across the floor. I frowned and swiped it off the floor. It was one of my coworkers. Sighing, I answered it.
"Yes?"
"Queenie! I'm so sorry, I know you requested tonight off but I have to take my baby to the ER, he stuck something up his nose and I don't know what to do but there's no one else who can cover for me!" Frantic screaming sounded on the other end.
I threw a worried look at Hitoshi. He offered me a smile, "your pep talk has successfully alleviated my anxiety and cheered me up, go."
"You're the best kid in the whole world and I love you." I gave his hand a squeeze before returning to my frantic co-worker, "I'll cover for you, keep me posted about the baby."
"You're a lifesaver Queenie!" My coworker cried before hanging up.
I got up from the table to go get ready and stopped to kiss the top of Hitoshi's head, "I meant it, you know. You really are the best."
"Yeah, yeah." He grumbled, flustered by my affection and shoved me away, "you're not so bad yourself."
I pulled up the schedule on my phone to see what shift I'd blindly agreed to cover and sighed, pole dancing. I checked this week's theme and almost kicked myself, this week's theme was sexy bunnies. Grumbling under my breath, I went to change into a ridiculously skimpy bunny costume, complete with ears, puffy tail and a lacy bow and wrist cuffs.
Hitoshi choked on a laugh when I returned to the kitchen. "Have fun?"
"I'm going to murder whoever picked this weeks theme." I growled.
"But not really...right?" He grimaced.
"Depends on who it is." I grumbled angrily.
"You should probably wear a coat or something..." Hitoshi said before pausing and looking to my ears, "nevermind people are going to say something regardless...try to avoid making the news this time..."
"No promises." I sighed before giving him a kiss on the cheek, "I love you, try to go to bed at a decent hour, I'll be home before you wake up and I'll pick up donuts."
Hitoshi smiled, "I love you too, Nee-san. Thanks."
I waved farewell to my younger brother, snatched a light jacket to try to hide as much of the ridiculous bunny costume as I could and headed off to work. There was only one incident on the way, an idiot thought he would make some very lewd propositions but after I made him get on the wrong train, everyone else in the station left me the hell alone.
I arrived at the club in a foul mood. Sunday nights were usually our slowest nights which kept me somewhat level as I realized I wouldn't have to be seen in this ridiculous sexy bunny costume by too many patrons. As I stepped into the club, I paused as I spotted three familiar faces sitting at the bar. The weird teachers from UA, Present Mic, Midnight and Eraser Head, though he'd introduced himself to me as Shota Aizawa.
They glanced my way as I stepped into the club and I threw them all the most spiteful look I could muster up before heading to the back to get rid of my coat. As I stepped into the locker room I groaned as I spotted my creep of a boss trying to flirt with one of the servers. The girl looked very uncomfortable and from the looks of it had tried to let him down several times already.
"She's not interested in you, leave her alone." I growled.
The server, a new hire, turned to me and threw me a grateful look as the creep stepped away from her. She scurried away quickly. My boss, an overweight middle aged man who'd been going bald for years and just desperately kept trying to hang on and comb over what few wisps of hair he had left, turned his hungry brown eyes to me.
"Queenie...I didn't think you were working tonight." He smiled.
"Most disappointing for you, I know. You can't creep on the staff tonight. Whatever will you do with your time?" I smirked.
His smile fell, I'd hit the nail on the head. "I have been working some long hours, perhaps I'll call it an early night and head home."
"I'm sure you and your hand will have a lovely time." I shrugged out of my coat and hung it in my open locker.
"We certainly will now that we've got some new material." He guffawed.
I rolled my eyes and exited the locker room.
The server he'd been harassing was waiting out in the hall for me, "thanks Queenie."
"Anytime. He might be a creep but he's a pushover, just show him you're not going to take shit from him and he'll back down." I offered her some words of advice.
"I'll keep that in mind." She bowed before scurrying onto the floor.
I slowly headed back out on the floor, praying those weird teachers would be gone. I glanced at the bar and groaned inwardly as they all looked in my direction, their eyes growing wide as they took in my stupid skimpy bunny costume. Clenching my fists in aggravation, I decided I was beating the shit out of whoever picked bunny week as a theme regardless of who it was and stomped over to the stage. The club's DJ, Goro, took one look at me and choked on a laugh.
"I'm going to have so much fun with this." He poked at me as I passed his booth on my way to the main stage.
"Just remember I can destroy you." I smiled sweetly and flipped him off as I passed him by.
"Alright folks, you're in for a real treat tonight. Our star Queenie has decided to grace us with her presence." Goro began hyping up the crowd. "As a warning, don't let that cute face fool you, she's one bad bitch you definitely don't want to cross. So be sure to leave all tips in the tip jars, touch this Queen and it's off with your head."
I rolled my eyes at his introduction and flipped him off as he played a song I detested. He chuckled and changed the song causing the crowd to laugh. I noticed a small party near the stage who'd overindulged in alcohol, whispering and giggling amongst themselves not taking Goro's warning seriously. Deciding it best to show a strong display, I executed a flip mount, flipping high into the air and grabbing the pole mid air, suspending myself with ease from years of training. The giggling drunks who'd been trying to decide who was going to pester me, all sat back down and watched me in awe.
After my sultry yet powerful routine, I exited the stage for a break and let one of the newer staff members take the stage. My gaze flicked to the bar, the three teachers were still there. Midnight was ogling me shamelessly as I made my way toward the bar.
"If I'm not mistaken, isn't tonight a school night?" I scowled at them all as I leaned across the bar next to the quiet Eraser Head to grab a bottle of water.
"Oh kitten, or should I call you bunny tonight? Your pole routine was wonderful." Midnight cooed.
"I'd prefer it if you didn't call me either of those things." I growled as I snatched a bottle of water from behind the counter and downed half of it in one go. It was always so hot on stage, the lights were blinding and gave off way too much heat. I downed the rest of it and chucked the empty bottle in the recycling receptacle behind the counter before searching for another bottle of water. There weren't any more within reach.
"Here." The quiet, Eraser Head, slid an unopened bottle of water that had been sitting in front of him over to me.
"I'm accepting it because I'm fucking hot, I owe you nothing because you're all a bunch of fucking stalkers and for the record I still think you're all freaks." I snatched the bottle from him and double checked to make sure it hadn't been opened before sipping at it slowly.
"Noted." He smirked.
I scowled at him but felt a little off since he hadn't fought me back. He was odd. Most people either fought me back, kept their distance or groveled at my feet. Present Mic seemed the type to keep his distance, Midnight was definitely one more insult away from groveling at my feet. I was beginning to wonder if she was a masochist. Eraser Head didn't fit any of those categories and it was really annoying.
"Hey, Queenie?" The new server I'd helped out earlier approached me nervously.
I looked over at her curiously, "yes?"
"I know you don't usually do bookings for Sunday nights, but there's a lady here who asked me if you'd be willing to take one?" She asked nervously.
I sighed, I was still hot from the stage lights but I didn't have to use my quirk more than once on my way to work so I had enough energy. "Sure. Send her to my room, I'll be there in a second." I set the half empty bottle of water on the counter, "I'd appreciate it if you'd all stop stalking me. In the future it would be great if you only made contact with me if it had something to do with my brother as your student, which you can do so over the phone like normal teachers." I said coolly to the trio before sauntering away trying to retain as much dignity as possible strutting away from them in a slutty bunny costume. I was sure it looked ridiculous considering they got a nice view of my ass and the puffy bunny tail as I walked away but I somehow maintained a confident strut though on the inside I was completely mortified.
I took a deep breath before heading into my usual private room for my sessions. A woman who appeared to be in her thirties was sitting uncomfortably on one of the sofas glancing around at all the lewd art and flashing lights that shone in from the main stage via the wall of glass blocking the room from the rest of the club. She looked up as I stepped in the room and I offered her a welcoming smile.
"Good evening, my name's Queenie, how may I be of service?" I asked.
She relaxed a little in my presence and offered me a small smile, "I heard from a friend that your quirk might be able to help me."
"With?"
"..." She paused and took a deep breath before continuing, "...I was raped a year ago...and I've been to countless doctors and therapists and they all say it will take time to recover and be myself again...but it's putting a strain on my marriage, I really want to be intimate with my partner again but every time I try...I just can't..."
"I'm so sorry that happened to you. What were you hoping I could do for you?" I asked unsure.
"Can you make me forget it ever happened?" She asked with tears in her eyes.
"If that is what you wish. I can. Was there anything else?"
She thought for a moment, "I wish I had more confidence."
I smiled. "I can do that. May I sit with you?"
She nodded.
I moved slowly so as not to make her feel threatened and took a seat beside her. "I will need to make physical contact for my quirk to work, is it alright if we hold hands?"
She placed her hand in mine and I saw her brace herself, ready for all the pain to be shed away.
I gave her hand a gentle squeeze before activating my quirk, "tell me who did this to you."
"...my manager at work..."
"Have they done anything else, at work?"
"He sends a lot of lewd emails to the women in the office and makes advances."
"What a scumbag, when you go back to work you should forward his emails to HR."
"I will."
"Good. I want you to remember, you are so much stronger than you know. You are a powerful, radiant goddess." I said softly and smiled as I watched her small withdrawn demeanor begin to shift as she started to believe my words. She was relaxed. I squeezed her hand once more, "That painful memory that haunts you, tuck it away, bury it deep, forget it happened and remember you are strong, you are beautiful, you deserve to be cherished and loved by someone who respects you, you are a goddess who calls her own shots."
A radiant smile lit up her face and all the pain and darkness that had haunted her seemed to lift away. I deactivated my quirk and took a deep breath to steady myself. After a moment she opened her eyes and slowly released my hand from her hold. She turned to me and hugged me tight.
"I can't remember what it is I wanted you to fix, but I haven't felt this good in years." She squeezed me tight.
"I didn't fix anything, there was nothing to fix, you weren't broken. You pulled yourself out of the darkness all on your own. My quirk can't make you do anything you aren't capable of." I smiled.
