Chapter Four

~Inari's POV~

Flashback

Inari- 13

Hitoshi-6

I woke up in the middle of the night to my parents screaming. Quietly, I crept from my bed and went to my kid brother's room. Hitoshi was curled up in his bed crying. I grabbed his hands in mine.

"Hey, it's okay." I cooed softly only to cringe as I heard a glass shatter in the living room and resisted the urge to groan, I'd have to clean it up later. I focused on Hitoshi and smiled brightly down at him. "You know what that sound means?"

"W-what?" He sniffled.

"Monsters have broken into the house." I said dramatically.

"M-monsters?!" He panicked.

"Yep, we need to get to the safe house." I raced to his window and flung it open.

He scampered after me. "Nee-san, I'm scared."

"I know. It's okay. You've got me, forever and always. And I'll punch anything that scares you in the face and make it cry." I declared.

He cracked a small smile though it fell as I crawled out the window.

"Nee-san?" He whined.

"Come on, the safe house, it's this way." I beckoned him out onto the fire escape with me.

He hesitated before climbing out the window after me. I offered him my hand so he could hold onto me and began the long climb up the fire escape to the roof. Once we were on the roof I laid on my back and looked up at the starry sky above. Hitoshi laid beside me and stared up at the star speckled sky in awe.

I pulled him close so he'd be warm, "the monsters can't reach us here." I whispered.

I returned home earlier than usual after an emotional night. My last client of the night suffered from severe PTSD, he'd tried all kinds of medication, therapy and even hypnosis but nothing gave him any kind of reprieve. He reached out to me as a last resort, fully intending to end his life if I couldn't offer him any help.

Drained, physically, mentally and emotionally, I returned to my apartment. Hitoshi was still awake studying at the kitchen table. He looked up warily as I shut the door behind me.

"You're home early." He noticed my expression and frowned, "what happened?"

"Nothing. Just used my quirk a lot. So I'm a bit tired." I reassured him, "you're up late, is this normal?"

"Finals." He shrugged.

"Alright, well let me make you a snack then." I tousled his hair.

"How many weirdos wanted you to make them bark like a dog tonight?" He pondered.

"A lot of people, and we don't kink shame in this household, it's not weird, it's just different from our preferences." I pointed as I sifted through the fridge to find some ingredients for a healthy snack to help him while he was studying.

"...you didn't go to UA...right?" He asked after a moment.

"Why do you ask?" I pondered.

"Nee-san." He groaned.

"What?! I'm asking why you would ask such a thing? I told you I wasn't." I huffed defensively.

He slid his phone across the table at me. It was open to a blog about several odd occurrences of men and women suddenly losing control of themselves and doing really embarrassing things like kissing the ground or barking like dogs and one man making out with a street sign, he'd really pissed me off.

"Full moon?"

"All the locations are weirdly on the way from here to UA..." Hitoshi frowned.

"...fine...I went to UA...also are you sure you want to go there, some of the staff is really fucking weird." I pointed.

Hitoshi threw me a scowl, "Nee-san."

"The test was unfair!" I snapped.

Hitoshi's eyes grew wide, "you didn't go in that, did you?!"

"....yes..."

He dropped his head onto the table with a groan.

"Alright, you're bringing way too much negativity to this and did you miss the part where I said they're fucking weird?! You should be embarrassed by them, not me." I retorted.

"You're my sister! Why should I be embarrassed by them, they're not related!" He sighed, "were you at least polite?"

"Why would you think I wouldn't be polite?" I asked innocently.

"...the last three parent teacher conferences..." Hitoshi threw me a piercing look and aggressively tapped his pencil on the table.

"Well, the last three teachers at those conferences were a bunch of fucking asshats." I grumbled in my defense.

"You punched one of them in the face!" He snapped.

"SHE FUCKING DESERVED IT!" I raged. She'd called him mind control freak in the ladies room to another teacher. I wasn't letting that one slide.

"You hit her in the bathroom!" Hitoshi threw his pencil down.

"And I'd do it again too." I folded my arms across my chest.

"Did you punch any of the UA teachers? They're heroes I feel like you could go to jail for that." He groaned.

"I technically could have gone to jail for the other bitch but we had a talk and she agreed not to press charges if I agreed to never go near her again." I shrugged.

"Were you polite or not? You're doing a lot of deflecting." Hitoshi frowned.

"I didn't punch anyone." I grinned.

Hitoshi groaned, "what did you do?"

"...called them a bunch of fucking morons..." I muttered.

"Well I guess I'm not getting into that school, I should probably start applying to all my backups.

"You will get in. They said you did awesome on your written exam." I offered.

"You said you wouldn't do anything." He frowned.

"And I crossed my fingers behind my back because I am a liar." I shrugged as I finished preparing some vegetable dumplings and set them down beside him.

"Thanks Nee-san." He picked up one of the dumplings, "...for always having my back."

I smiled, "I will always have your back, I might approach it in a very unhealthy and aggressive way but I will always have your back."

He chuckled, "you should work on yourself."

"Yeah, that's definitely not in the budget." I rolled my eyes before tousling his hair, "don't stay up too much later, okay? Sleep is important."

"I'll go to bed soon." He promised.

"Good, I'm gonna go take a very long nap." I sighed and trudged to my bedroom.

"It's just called sleep at that point." He called after me with a laugh.

I took a quick shower before changing into an oversized t-shirt and collapsing onto my bed. Just as I was about to drift to sleep, I heard a soft knock at my door.

"Yes?" I called inquisitively.

My bedroom door swung open and Hitoshi poked his head through the door. "Nee-san?"

"Yes?"

"...do you really think I'll get into UA?" He asked nervously.

"Yes, I do. And I can honestly say it had nothing to do with me, if anything they were more likely to reject you but if they still accept you after that, then they REALLY want you to go there." I smiled.

"So you weren't polite?" He frowned.

"I tried."

"Yeah, for how long?" He smirked.

"Three seconds, there was an awkward silence as they checked me out on the security cameras and I lost my cool."

Hitoshi chuckled, "I'm impressed you lasted that long."

"Rude." I grumbled.

"Where do you think I learn it from?" He retorted.

"Point taken, go to bed, asshole." I grinned.

"Goodnight...I love you Nee-san."

"Even though I embarrass you to no end?" I beamed.

"Yeah." He rolled his eyes.

"I love you too. Goodnight, brat."
