The team sits, battered and bruised, at the conference table with Fury at the head.
"What are we looking at, Fury?" Steve asks, "what the hell was that?"
"The dogs did not acts like normal 'bred to kill' dogs," Tony adds, "it's like they locked onto a target and kept going and they wouldn't fucking die."
"That's because they did," Fury says, pulling up a large screen on the wall, "microbionic genetic engineering. The dogs were injected with millions of them. The damned things tapped into their feral instincts and kept healing any damage you delt to them within a matter of seconds."
"So we can't kill them?" Natasha asks.
"Oh you can kill them," Fury says, showing a video of one of the mutts they captured during the fight, "but only by bashing their heads in. And even then it's not a guarantee."
The video shows a large object being dropped on the mutt's head. It twitches and fights to stay alive but eventually goes limp.
"Where the fuck did HYDRA even get the tech?" Banner asks, looking away from the screen and to Fury.
"A scientist by the name of Silen Cordin had been working on the tech," a picture of a petite, red headed woman in a lad coat shows up on the screen, "you could probably called her a mad scientist. She was testing the tech on herself with the aid of her, at the time husband, Niel Cordin. Unfortunately, things went south. Mr. Cordin was an agent for HYDRA and stole the tech."
A dark haired man with a scar across his face shows up.
"With all of her self experimentation, Mrs. Cordin managed to mutate herself," Silen shows back up, along with a picture of a larger, green woman, whose features are almost identical, "she created a shehulk, which she calls Vil."
Banner's jaw drops as he stares at the screen.
"When her tech was stolen, she went in a rampage and killed two dozen people in Santa Fe, New Mexico," a new video shows Vil tearing apart cars and throwing bodies as she makes her way down a busy road, "she's since been detained and is in a maximum security prison in Washington where a limiter collar keeps her from transforming into Vil."
A mug shot shows Silen in an orange jumpsuit staring with an almost dead expression.
"She claims that the tech was only meant to be used for medical purposes such as healing untreatable injuries and that she never knew what her husband had planned," Fury continues, "but evidence pointed elsewhere."
"How long has she been there?" Steve asks, leaning into the table.
"Six years," Fury answers, "she was sentenced to life in prison with now chance of bail or parole, and was told that the possibility for the death penalty with there."
"So the agent stole her tech and HYDRA weaponized it," Banner says looking intensely at the table, "what if she wasn't lying? What if it was true, that she didn't know what her husband was planning?"
"In all honesty Doctor," Fury looks to him, "I'd like to believe it is. But her aggressive nature in the prison would say otherwise."
A video of her beating a male inmate with a lead pipe shows on the screen.
"Even without changing, she's deemed crazy," she's tasered and drops, "and is no longer allowed to interact with the other prisoners."
Banner looks back at the table and thinks to himself.
If someone he trusted betrayed him like that, he would be pissed too. All that work and effort stolen.
He thinks back to what Fury had said about the tech.
It made things aggressive.
What if her husband used it on her to cover his tracks while he made his get away?
It's a possibility.
He keeps his thoughts to himself as the rest of the team continues to discuss.
"I've made a call to Washington to have her brought here," Fury says as the screen turns off.
"What? Are you fucking crazy?" Clint stares at the man in shock, "you wanna bring her here?"
"She's the only person outside of HYDRA that knows anything about the tech," Fury explains, "we'll need the insight. Maybe she knows how to shut it down."
"This is crazy," Tony says punching the bridge of his nose.
"She will be working with Doctor Banner to figure out what exactly HYDRA did to the tech and if she can stop it," Fury says as he starts to walk to the exit, "I'm sure you can help keep her in check, Doctor."
"And if she hulks out?" Steve asks before the director can leave the room.
"I guess it's a good thing we have someone to match her," he says as he opens the door, "good luck, Doctor."
The door closes and all eyes go to Banner.
"I'm not so sure about this plan," Clint speaks up first, "what if she was working with HYDRA? What if she still is?"
"We're just going to have to take that risk," Steve says, "if we want a chance at stopping this."
"Yeah but say she is working for them," Tony interjects, "hypothetically of course, and she steals information from the compound and gives it to the bad guys. What then?"
"If it comes to that, we'll deal with it then," Steve sighs, "but for now, we need to hope what she claims is true and that she didn't know HYDRA was using her. Maybe she wants to take them down just as much as we do and she'll help us figure this out."
"Alright, Captain Optimist," Tony gets to his feet, "but if she hurts Pepper or Morgan, I'll kill her."
Steve nods in understanding before Tony leaves out the way Fury had.
"I hope you're right Steve," Natasha says getting to her feet as well, both her and Clint heading for the door, "I really do."
The room is silent as the remainder of the team stays seated.
"You up to this, Banner?" Steve asks, looking to the other.
Banner thinks for a moment before answering.
"Yeah," Banner lets out a heavy breath, "I'm gonna have to be so we can get this done."
With that he stands and heads to the lab.
He's not sure what he's getting into, but if it means stopping HYDRA, he'll try his best.
