▪ THIRTY-SEVEN

Jungkook pulled the brake after changing the gear to 'P' when the car stopped in front Nahee's home.

Nahee instantly turned herself to face the man. "Jungkook-ah."

"What?" Jungkook muttered as he put down his phone after checking the notifications.

"How busy are you recently?"

"Quite busy." The raven-haired man shrugged. "As busy as you are, I can say."

Nahee deeply hummed as she nodded her head, slowly moving her gaze to the other place.

Jungkook raised his eyebrows. "Why you ask?"

"Nothing. I recall you barely answered any of my calls recently."

Jungkook nodded his head and didn't say anything about the statement. He then smiled and said, "you should go in now. It's getting late."

"Can I call you everyday?"

Jungkook was flustered. "Uhh..."

"Oppa."

"Whaat?" The man's eyes got bigger upon hearing the nickname. Despite the reaction that the man showed, Nahee feigned an ignorance. "Did I hear her right?" He muttered.

Nahee grabbed her bag under the drawer and then, her books at the back seat. While fixing her books, she uttered, "if you let me call you, I'll continue to be this intimate."

Jungkook was flustered. "Who teach you this?"

His girlfriend showed a smug smile as she pointed at herself. "Myself."

"Hmm." Jungkook was thinking for awhile. "Okay, but no! You can call me anything but 'oppa'."

Nahee didn't expect that. Her lips curved downward with her average-sized eyes widened. "Why not 'oppa'?"

With a low, nonchalant tone and heavy Busan accent but native Seoul words, he asked, "you. How old are you?"

The pout on the girl's lips kept coming back and forth as she tried to answer. The intention to answer immediately cancelled and her words became a question, the same question before. "Why not 'oppa'?"

"I. Don't. Like," Jungkook said. "Especially from those who are older and same age as me."

The car became silenced for a few moments. Nahee still staring at her contracted boyfriend with a pout on her upper lips while Jungkook stared at her with an eyebrow raised. The staring competition went on and became intense when the girl furrowed her eyebrows, still with the pout.

It only ended as Nahee pulled the door lever and pushed it open.

"Yah, you can call me 'yeobo'."

"It's old couples."

"What's wrong with us, the young ones calling each other with that name?"

Nahee turned her head to look at Jungkook. Expressing her dislike with her eyes widened, with the same tone that Jungkook used, she also said, "I. Don't. Like."

Jungkook sighed, "alright, salty."

"What?!"

Jungkook looked at Nahee with dumb expression. "Nothing." Nahee rolled her eyes, but before she could bring her whole body out of the car, the man called, "bye, room temperature milk."

Nahee pushed herself back into the car again and hit him a few times with her thick books lightly. Biting her bottom lips with a glare at Jungkook who was smiling at her like a dumb, she brought herself out of the car again.

He chuckled as he watched the salty Nahee marched towards the gate. When she stopped in front of the gate and unlocked it, Jungkook rolled the glass down and told, "call me anytime, okay?"

"Whatever." The gate then immediately shut with a wincing noise.

"Call me, love!" His bid was only answered with the noises of foot stomping coming from the house. He laughed.

There was always an episode where Jungkook would tease Nahee until she got defeated. To him, teasing Nahee was fun. Seeing the pout, hearing the whining and feeling challenge by the petite, sweet girl was something he wanted to remember at the end of their date because it put him to smile when he had a bad day.

Same like that day, Nahee called him at the right time. The day that was once grey, contrasted with pastel hues when Nahee appeared. The unexpected changes.

With a smile, he pushed the brake handle and off he left the area. The journey on the road kept going without a true destination. He didn't plan on going back to Seokjin's house. He couldn't feel the strain in his cheeks even though he kept smiling. The pain of euphoria. He thought it wouldn't be a matter if he ended up looked like a creepy Joker.

His phone rang, notifying of an incoming call when he stopped at the traffic light. He looked at the notification that had connected to him phone from the screen on his dashboard.

'Seokjin hyung' was shown on the screen. Jungkook decided to ignore him and pushed the acceleration pedal when the green light shone on his face.

It rang long, begging the receiver to answer but in the end, he chose to press the red button.

As he didn't think going back to the house was a good idea, he contacted Jimin. He pushed a wireless earpiece in his ear and waited for the older to answer.

Jungkook's eardrum was greeted by a feminine giggle and familiar voice of laughter. He scrunched his face, judging at how Jimin treated his client as he thought 'no wonder his girls are weird.'

"Hello!" Jimin said.

"Yo, hyung."

"Wait, wait. Yeji-yah, stop! It's ticklish."

Jungkook sighed. He knew that was private but he hated PDA.

A muffled but clear dialogue from Jimin was uttered, "alright, good girl. Stop, don't! A friend here." A feminine giggle and 'okay' directed to Jimin made Jungkook to drive his car to the edge of the road.

"Yo, Jungkook. What's up?"

"Hyung." Jungkook tried his best not to make his tone sad, but Jimin seemed to be able sense it.

"Yah, what's wrong?"

"I don't have a place to stay tonight."

"Oh, uhm." This time, Jungkook heard Jimin was whispering, probably to the girl named Yeji. "Yah, I don't think you can stay here tonight."

Jungkook let out a loud sigh. "Alright."

"Sorry, Jungkook-ah."

"It's all fine."

"Uhh, is there anything I can do for you?"

"Nope. I'll just," Jungkook softly sighed. "I'll ask Taehyung hyung."

"Oh, okay. I'm sorry, Jungkook. My girlfriend is staying tonight."

Jungkook raised an eyebrow. "You haven't learned your lessons."

"She's safe."

"Safe, my ass. How many girls are you going to imply safe and have them trying to do something on you again?"

"Well... This one is... This one is a different case. She's leaving later."

Jungkook silently scoffed. "She isn't staying?"

They had quiet moment for a few seconds. Whispers were heard which later became whisper-yell and that made Jungkook rolling his eyes.

Jimin's voice came back to the speaker but with hesitation. "Jungkook-ah."

"Yeah?"

"Y-you... can stay."

**********

"You can stay, Jungkook."

Jungkook took off his footwear as a girl who introduced herself as Yeji guided him inside. So far, Jimin's current client was okay. Just... okay... After all that Jimin had gone through with his past clients, he didn't think that it was a good idea for him to act extra friendly.

Delicious smell greeted his nose and the sound on metallic materials clanging against each other drumming in his ears.

"What is Jimin hyung doing?" Jungkook asked with a fake yet cute grin on his face.

"He's cooking."

Jungkook kept quiet, confused. "But Jimin hyung is bad at cooking."

Yeji only chuckled. "You gotta be kidding me. I saw him looking for recipes before you came."

"You shouldn't have trusted him with cooking that way. The last time I remember he couldn't differentiate course salt and fine salt even with guides."

Yeji instantly turned around and stared at Jungkook as she blinked her eyes multiple times.

"Yeji-yah," Jimin cooed from the kitchen. "The food is ready."

"Well," Yeji expressed nonchalantly at Jungkook. She wished she could respond for Jimin instead. "It's Jimin's cooking. Whatever it is, it's going to taste delicious."

Jungkook didn't know how to save Jimin's contracted girlfriend if she's like this. He continued to sway his feet to enter another area as he thought that he wouldn't touch any of Jimin's food, not until Yeji tasted it herself.

"Welcome home, my baby!" Jimin jokingly said with his arms open widely, light blue apron with colourful flowers print clad on the front part of his body.

Jungkook pushed the older away and sat on a stool.

"Yah!" Jimin showed a baffled expression although it was meant to joke. "Your favorite hyung has been waiting for you."

Jungkook nonchalantly muttered, "shut up."

"Jeon Jungkook!"

Yeji chuckled at their behavior as she sat down on a stool diagonally from Jungkook. Jimin sat beside her and across Jungkook.

"What you cooked, hyung?" Jungkook asked, raising a vegetable leave with his chopsticks and then dropped it on Yeji's plate. Jimin saw his doing, raising his eyebrows. With a fake smile, the youngest man there said, "ladies first."

Yeji reluctantly got a spoon in her right hand while exchanging stares with Jimin and Jungkook. It seemed like Jungkook's words had affected her. Still, she put the food in her mouth.

"Hyung, how did you season the food this time?" Jungkook asked, grabbing a cup and a bottle of water.

Jimin stayed quiet for awhile, watching his contracted girlfriend crunching the food in her mouth. "A pinch of salt and two teaspoons of sugar. A little pepper."

Jungkook's voice came out gruff as he spoke as soon as he finished the water. With eyebrows furrowed, he said, "what are you trying to cook?"

"I don't remember. I just followed the recipe."

Jungkook nodded lightly, voicing out his opinion in a not interested way, "looks delicious." He then grabbed another cup and poured water into it.

Yeji finally made a sound. "Oppa," came out as a coo almost quietly.

Both of the men turned their heads to look at her.

Yeji, with a grimace, shaking her head while looking at Jimin. Pitiful...

Jungkook slowly slid her a cup of water.

**********

Yeji left the house after telling Jimin that she would stay at her friend's house. Jungkook cared less about her, as long as he's there with Jimin, then that naive man would be fine. Yeji radiated a little annoying vibe to him as he witnessed everything that happened there.

Jungkook saw that Jimin spoiled his client way too much. It made him cringed. But he had to keep his opinion on his own. Everyone has their own styles with their girlfriend and boyfriend after all.

That night, after cleaning up everything in the kitchen,  Jimin decided to watch a horror movie that he was supposed to watch with Yeji but it seemed that he had to watch it with Jungkook that day.

Jungkook crossed his arms no matter how scary some scenes were, while Jimin had a pillow clutched on his stomach. The movie didn't look interesting to Jungkook. He ended up slumping himself on the sofa.

"Hyung."

"Yeah?" Jimin's eyes didn't leave the television although a pillow was under his eyes.

"The contract is getting harder."

"W-what are you talking about?" He cowered when an intense scene appeared on the screen.

"The contract relationship."

Jimin managed to change his gaze to Jungkook. "Why?"

"I don't know," the younger sighed. "It just gets harder."

"Do you not have fun with your contract relationship now?"

"I have fun. It just," Jungkook paused. "The happiness that she brought to my life is similar with the one I felt... a few years ago." He then added, "I miss those moments. She's very similar to her, hyung. Very similar that all the memories coming back to my mind one by one. Whose fault is this? Mine or her... or her?"

Jimin slowly put down the pillow to his lap, staring at Jungkook. He had never heard the younger speaking any topic this deep. Jimin didn't know that story Jungkook's dark past, and that made him thinking he wasn't a good place for the younger to seek for advice and comfort.

Jungkook's next words immediately changed the atmosphere. "Ah, hyung. Let's talk about what makes me stay here."

Jimin was a little confused with the sudden changes. But he shrugged it off. "Right. What happened?"

"Seokjin hyung's parents are back."

The sounds from television didn't scare Jimin anymore. He was most likely to focus on the younger. He turned his body to face him.

This was the only story of Jungkook's most twisted story Jimin knew. This was a right moment for him to help the troubled boy, even if it's meant to be a little. "You, still have issues with them?" Jimin asked, with thick Busan accent.

Jungkook didn't care about the accent. They were from the same province afterall. He might have Taehyung to share with his deepest secrets, but he felt most comfortable with Jimin.

Jungkook proceeded to answer after a sigh leaving his mouth. "Can say. I hate to say that I have the feeling that there's something they hide from me."

"Like what?"

Jungkook raised both of his shoulders. "I can't tell. I tried to remember the matters I've heard that they and my parents talked. But I can't remember everything."

Jimin nodded his head, understanding his situation. "Have you conclude anything?"

Jungkook shook his head. "I still need more to think."

"Don't go exerting yourself."

"The problem is going to exert myself harder, I know."

"Things happen. People make problems and the way we react will be another matter that will decide whether the problem will be bigger or it'll be regarded as solved and forgotten. You can even choose to have it settled but mysteries keep going."

"I hate unsolved problems, hyung."

"Some problems are meant to not be settled early. You'll be considered lucky if the problem settled at the time you want. It may have reasons for its happenings. Like hidden values, Jungkook. Hidden life's meaning."

Jungkook looked at Jimin before staring at the white wall behind the television.

Hidden life's meaning.

Long time ago, he defined the loss of Kang Gaeun as a point for him to start suffering. However, as he grew up, he realized that wasn't the part where he started suffering.

Everything in his life went on normally to the point he almost didn't grasp the presence of a big accidental dot that had been making it's appearance for almost a decade.

So many mysteries in the past that he wanted to solve. So many memories that he wanted to stop remembering. So many present moments that he wished he could stop them from happening.

But he was only a normal human being who had to go through the world's craziness. Everything were bound to happen.

The bell sound and a buzz from the younger's phone startled him while Jimin only made a short glance on the table to see whose phone notified.

Jungkook lazily raised up his upper body to get his phone while the owner of the house got up from the sofa to stop the movie from playing. Jungkook watched him tapping the table as if he was looking for the compact disc's case while his hand clicking the home button.

His phone showed he received a message.

Jungkook snorted at the message. It looked like Nahee was still sulking but in an adorable to his heart way.

He replied the message.

Just after he clicked the arrow button to send, he heard Jimin cowering, "Jungkook-ah, the player isn't turning off. It keeps playing!! The ghost possessed the player."

Jungkook muttered, "what are you talking about?" He then got up approaching Jimin. "You're as worse as Seokjin hyung. You keep on pressing the pause and play button, how is that going to stop?!"

"I can't see."

Jungkook looked at him by the corner of his eyes, seeing him pressing his eyes. "Aren't you wearing your contact lenses?"

Jimin shook his head.

"Why are you not wearing your glasses?!"

"I broke it this afternoon," Jimin told.

Jungkook let out an exasperated sigh. He wished he knew how it happened but all he could think was Jimin was either clumsy or careless. He then said, "get away. I'll turn this off. You go to sleep."

"Aigoo, thank you, Jungkook-ah." Jimin patted the younger's back.

"Yeah, yeah." He saw Jimin leaving him after that, going to his room. He then silently complaining, "aish... Why does the younger have to take care of the older?"

Despite the complaints, he still doing his task. Once putting the compact disc into its case and place it lazily on the television desk, he got up, taking his phone with him and brought himself into Jimin's bedroom.

"A ghost!"

"It's Jeon Jungkook!" The younger scolded.

Little did they know, the television flickered and turned on by itself, playing a channel's variety show and drama the whole night.
