▪ THIRTY-FOUR
It was a busy month for the students where Nahee studied. The library was filled with students occupying seats.
Nahee couldn't seem to focus on learning what the book had. A notebook in her left hand was closed, only to have the pages being played with her slender fingers. She couldn't even try to interpreting the account ledger that she had prepared to revise. She ended up counting and summarizing something else.
"We are eight months now," Nahee mumbled. Suddenly, she held out her hands and closed her fingers one by one. She then muttered to herself, "so Eerin eonni's around seven months."
Eight months just happened to pass like in a blink.
She added, "I never know a relationship can pass this fast."
Sometimes, she forgot how time was. Jungkook had been visiting her after school hours and when she's not too tired, he would bring her to Seokjin's café. And of course, she couldn't escape that older's teasing. No wonder they were cousins.
"Nowadays, I can't see him often. He's probably busy and we're having exams," she paused. "What is this feeling?" She whispered to herself. She then whined and slumped her head on the thick opened book.
Somin and Jiwoo heard her. They looked at one another before looking at Nahee. Both of them snorted. It's amusing to see Nahee talking to herself.
"Nahee-ya, you miss him?" Somin asked.
Nahee immediately raised her head up. Her hair was disheveled and eyes widened. "What?" Somin and Jiwoo looked at her teasingly. Nahee quickly said with a tremendous head shake, "no no no no no no."
"I can't believe she denies it," Jiwoo muttered to Somin with a curt smirk.
"For someone who has no experience about love is that," Somin said.
Jiwoo chuckled before she dramatically whisper-yell, "Oh no, Somin. This is dangerous."
"What?"
Jiwoo stared at Somin quietly before a knowing smirk formed on her face. "Our Nahee is in loooove~"
Somin shaped an 'o' on her mouth and then copying Jiwoo's smirk.
"I can't possibly be in love," Nahee uttered.
"It is possible, you dork!" Jiwoo said with a flick on Nahee's forehead.
"Ow!" Nahee held her forehead but didn't say anything, rather stared at Jiwoo with a pout.
"It doesn't matter if you and Jungkook are contracted. You have feelings, it's okay to say that you've fallen for him," Jiwoo advised.
"What's wrong with being in love with someone you have contract with?" Somin butted in, showing the in-loved girl a frown.
Nahee became speechless, "well...'
"Nahee-yah, you know that rules can be broken, right? Anything can break any rules. Even love can break a rule," Somin told.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, even if you and Jungkook are contracted, don't try to lie what your heart actually says. Like just now. You just said you don't miss him but I see that you keep on mumbling about him. Even Sara told me that you've been looking at your phone when Jiwoo and I weren't with you guys," Somin paused. "You like him, aren't you?"
"No."
"Hah! You see?" Somin sighed while Jiwoo pursed her lips. "Nahee-yaaaah, why are you doing like this to yourself?" Somin gave her a pout and a frown.
"You know, Somin," Nahee paused, placing the notebook on the table. She sighed, "if we break the contract rule, it's both of us are the one who'll get punished and fined. If the company chooses to punish us, we don't know what they are going to do with us."
Somin smiled lightly. "And love tends to require risks," she then halted when she saw Nahee's expression fell. "Alright. I'm not gonna push you to admit what you have in your heart, but to be honest, judging at your behavior, it looks obvious that you like him. Just one thing I want you to remember. Don't lie to yourself."
Nahee became speechless again. She then diverted her gaze to the phone on her laptop. She was contemplating whether to message Jungkook or not. But she remembered she had been sending her text messages every single day, ever since they left Jeju Island. As usual, Jungkook only gave her short replies but still insisting to chat. That was okay but replying to her with short messages had her felt a little upset. She used to be cool with that, but why now?
She thought that maybe, she should take a break from doing that that day. She didn't want to be labeled clingy, what's more she hated being that.
The idea of herself had fallen for Jungkook already scared her. Was this what Hoseok had been trying to tell her?
**********
It's been eight months since their contract was signed. Remembering the number of time they had been together was bothering that man.
While a woman beside him was talking about something, he was in his own world. Everything that worked around him felt nothing but slow. The voice of everything around him heard nothing but sounded like a blank noise. He didn't even know if he was breathing properly.
At that time, he was with his client. He knew he should be paying attention to her. However, how could he handle his mind from not thinking of Nahee? He didn't remember when was the last time they met after the event. He almost didn't remember how her voice was like. He was glad that Nahee thought of to send a good luck message one day.
He never thought that working as a gym coach and as a virtual boyfriend would give him a hard time. Everything made his life full unexpectedly. Everything used to go smooth, but why now?
Also, on that month, he had to work in his cousin's café since Seokjin hurted himself recently. He didn't know how Seokjin ended up hurting his arm and he had to wear a cast, but according to Jihoon, the worker there, his older cousin tripped his own apron when a girl customer was talking to him.
Remembering what happened to Seokjin managed to stop him from worrying about the contract relationship for awhile. He even heard the older's voice denying something in his mind.
"I wore my apron! That apron wasn't mine! I don't even know how the apron was on the floor."
"Hyung, I confirmed it was yours."
"And my handsome waist confirmed I had my apron on!"
Who would expect that black apron which was Seokjin's (though he kept denying it. Jungkook didn't understand why he kept denying) was on the black marble floor when that happened? It became a debate topic for one whole day.
"Jungkook!" A female's voice startled him. "Have you been listening?"
Jungkook became flustered. "I'm sorry."
The woman sighed. "What had gotten into you?"
"I'm sorry, Jihye. I was -"
"Save it. I don't pay you to blank your mind in front of me."
Jungkook didn't say much but he was only able to utter, "sorry."
His client sighed again. "Nevermind."
Jungkook decided to shrug the bad atmosphere off. "What's the plan again?"
He was glad that Jihye was willing to repeat her explanation. But again, no words had properly delivered to his mind.
His mind was back to thinking of Nahee.
**********
As soon as he's done discussing with his client, he decided to go back home instead of checking the gym or the company. He needed to check on Seokjin, knowing that the man couldn't stay still.
After he unlocked the passcode, he entered and loosened his shoes, dragging them inside before finally took it off and went inside with his socks.
"I'm home, hyung!" He cried out, however, he didn't get an answer. "Hyuuung!"
Later, Jungkook heard Seokjin shouted from his room's balcony, "I'm here!"
Jungkook scurried to his room and when he reached the door, he heard someone told the older, "you better talk to Jungkook about it."
That familiar voice. Charismatic, feminine voice when she demanded something on Seokjin. A voice that could tame Seokjin's playfulness. Something that Jungkook could never forget how the woman's action could affect his cousin. Jungkook didn't expect her to come back really quick.
"Oh my, Jungkook!" That firm voice changed into a soft and smooth voice. Anyone could fall for the act and voice, but not Seokjin and Jungkook. "How long have you been standing here? Oh my, you must be tired!" Mrs Kim then attempted to take his bag.
However, Jungkook pulled away. He hissed, "standing here isn't tiring at all."
"Jungkook..." Seokjin called with a demanding tone.
Mrs Kim heard him but acted that never happened. "I bought favorite lamb skewers for you. Come!" She tried to hold Jungkook's arm but he immediately backed away.
The younger's reflexes caused Mrs Kim taken aback. It wasn't a surprise for Seokjin to see Jungkook reacted that way, knowing the younger had been witness his own mother had been treating him different. Jungkook once told him that he didn't like how Mrs Kim had been giving so much love to him but not to her own son. He was very young when he expressed that out but he knew what he had and what Seokjin got from Mrs Kim was unfair. Something so close like if Jungkook got a big lollipop, Seokjin would get a small candy only.
Seokjin couldn't say anything when Jungkook expressed that out back then, he knew something that Jungkook didn't.
The last thing that Seokjin witnessed there, was Jungkook passing by him to go to his room while his mother glared at him before leaving him to the kitchen.
