▪ THIRTY-EIGHT
A/N : triple update, don't leave out THIRTY-SEVEN! 😊
––––
The lights at the living room were on and she knew someone was at home.
"I'm home!" Yelled Nahee after shutting the door behind her. She took off her footwear and swayed her legs into the living room.
"Hm, welcome home," answered Namjoon who was sitting with a pack of Cheetos in his arm.
She didn't expect Namjoon to present at the house. What's more without his wife. She put down her bag on the sofa and book on the table before sitting down on a single sofa diagonal to her brother.
"What are you doing here?"
"Eerin is at the hospital."
"Are you serious?"
Namjoon nodded his head.
"Then, why aren't you at the hospital with her?"
"What do you expect? I was panicking when she screamed and... I kind of broke the heartbeat tracker screen. I got kicked out of the ward then," Namjoon told.
Nahee stayed quiet, only the crunching noise of the snack being the sound that stopped silence from going around the area. She was only staring nonchalantly at Namjoon, wanting to scold him for not staying at the hospital but it's too late to do that, she thought. How she wished she could have been his older sister so that she could smack his head on behalf of their mother.
She got up to fetch a few pieces of the snack but only to get a slap on the hand by her brother. Both of them glared at each other as Nahee gave up on getting some.
Despite the glaring earlier, Nahee spoke. "Oppa, you gotta go back to the hospital. Eonni needs you, you know."
"They gonna kick me out again," Namjoon said.
"Then do you want me to go instead?"
Namjoon kept quiet for awhile. A piece of Cheetos stuck in his mouth formed a bulge on one of his cheeks, his eyes were staring at Nahee. "We go together. Have some Cheetos while I get something from my room."
With that Nahee happily got the Cheetos bag from Namjoon and shoved a piece in her mouth.

Once they arrived at the hospital, Nahee told Namjoon to wait outside the ward while she went in to check on Eerin. Her sister-in-law was sleeping when she went in and she saw that a broken heartbeat tracker was beside another heartbeat tracker, tracking Eerin's heartbeat.
Nahee left the ward, witnessing Namjoon going back and forth the hallway.
"Kim Namjoon," she called.
Namjoon stopped pacing, immediately went to his sister. "How's she?"
"She's sleeping," Nahee told.
Namjoon was only able to nod his head. He wished he could go back in and see his wife.
The sister and brother then went to sit on a bench situated in front of the ward. With a sigh, Namjoon pushed himself on the seat as Nahee sat down beside him with legs crossed and her sling bag on her lap.
When Nahee rested her head on the cold, white wall, she saw her brother leaning forward with his elbows on his thighs and palms rubbing over his face.
Nahee landed a hand on his back and softly rubbing it to sooth him before lightly patting. She then heard Namjoon said, "I didn't take care of her well."
"Oppa..."
Silence.
"She was bleeding," Namjoon told, almost whispering. Another sigh was let out, it was loud due to his palms covering his face.
Silence again. Nahee couldn't offer comforting words. She was not in the place where she understood this situation but knowing that Eerin's pregnancy was seven months, that was all she could feel the pain and worry that Namjoon was feeling at that moment. The possibilities that could happen to the baby or mother.
She heard Namjoon sniffed after that and coincidentally, she felt her phone vibrating in her bag. She took away her hand from her brother's back and unzipped her bag. Fishing out her phone, she saw a notification mentioning she received incoming call from their mother. "Oppa, eomma calls," she said.
"Answer it." Namjoon was still in the sitting same position. Nahee guessed he might be crying.
Nahee answered the call and attached the phone on her ear. "Hello."
"Kim Nahee, why is Namjoon not answering his phone and I got a call from Eerin's mother. What happened there?" Mrs Kim asked, almost yelling at the phone but Nahee sensed that she tried not to.
Nahee almost timidly answered, "Eerin eonni is at the hospital."
"Why is Namjoon not answering his phone?"
"Uhh... I guess he left his phone?"
Nahee heard her mother sighed through the speaker. "How's Eerin?"
"She's okay now, I guess. She's sleeping when I checked on her."
"And Namjoon?"
Nahee stared at Namjoon for awhile. "I don't know. Do you want to talk to him?"
"It's okay. I'm on my way going back to Ilsan."
"But eomma, at this hour. From Daejeon to Ilsan? It's going to be a long journey."
"What else can I do? I shouldn't just stay here doing nothing after work. Her mother and father can't go to the hospital now. The both of you don't even know how to manage this matter."
"Eomma... Aren't you tired?"
Just before Nahee could hear her mother's reply, Namjoon quickly raised up with wet cheeks and slightly red eyes. He wiped his wet palms on his jeans and told Nahee, "tell eomma just come back tomorrow. I can take care of Eerin."
"But oppa, eomma –"
"Just tell her. I'm going back home to get my phone." Namjoon stood up. "I'm going to take a hiatus."
Blurr Nahee couldn't get what her brother meant. "What?"
"You stay here. I won't be long. Don't forget to tell eomma what I said."
Naher wasn't able to say a word after seeing Namjoon ran off to the entrance. She was still blank from Namjoon sudden mood changes, or was he planning something? Nonetheless, she relied the message that Namjoon told her to tell. "Eomma, Namjoon oppa said just come back tomorrow. He's going to take care of eonni."
"Is he sure that he can do this?"
"Well, he's her husband, it's his responsibility. Oh! He also said he's going take a hiatus."
"Ahh, that's okay. I feel a little relieved now."
Nahee scratched her head. "Eomma, what is oppa talking about?"
"And what are you talking about?"
"About Namjoon oppa taking a hiatus."
"He's taking a hiatus from entertainment industry."
Nahee smacked her forehead. "I forget that he's an artist."
The girl heard her mother snorted and then, lightly laughing at her. "What?"
"Well." She looked at the broken heartbeat tracker through the rectangular window that on the door. She sighed, "nevermind..."
The call ended after Mrs Kim telling Nahee some advices and messages to help Namjoon. The youngest child of the family didn't realize the time had passed. Namjoon hadn't returned and she was all bored staying outside the ward. She decided to go in the ward, looking after Eerin while waiting for her brother.
As she stepped into the ward, she saw Eerin leaving the bathroom. She became slightly nervous that she scurried to her sister-in-law and took her arm in her hand.
"Eonni! Don't move too much."
Eerin was baffled. "I was peeing."
"I can help you move."
"I can move on my own."
"Nope, I'll help. It's my job to take care of you."
The soon-to-be mother looked at Nahee with a confused stare. "Where's your brother?"
"He went home to get stuff," Nahee told.
Eerin sat on the bed as she slowly got her legs up on it with a wince and a moan of discomfort. Nahee supported her by holding the back of her legs, following the paces and they safely rested the white mattress. The younger girl then pulled the blue hospital quilt on her sister-in-law, making her to lie down.
"You shouldn't have gone through the trouble," Eerin uttered, feeling bad.
Nahee smiled at her. "It's nothing. Don't worry. I'm taking care of you until Namjoon oppa comes back."
Eerin chuckled. She nodded her head. She then reached her phone on the bedside desk without any distraction. Only checking the time on her phone, she then put it on her lap.
"It's late. I'm really troubling you."
Nahee furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head. She then said, "you're not. I don't have exams tomorrow. Don't worry."
Eerin was only able to laugh softly at Nahee insisting that she's fine. There was nothing interesting in the ward at that moment. Not even the television offered interesting dramas or shows. She tried to find something to talk about to break the ice between two of them.
"How's Jungkook doing?" Eerin asked, with a small hint of smiling on her face. A smile that she tried to bear, a smile that showed she wanted to tease Nahee.
Nahee replied, "he's doing fine. Just busy with some work stuff."
Eerin then nodded, "I see. Have you two going on a date lately?"
"We had a date after I finished my schedule this evening."
Eerin curved her lips forming an 'o' before a wide grin appeared. She began to bombard the younger girl with questions. "What does he do? Did you two hold hands? Did you two kiss? Did you two feed each other? Did you two hug in public?"
The questions weren't bad for Nahee, but she thought it was nice of Eerin that she asked. Nahee laughed, shyly and softly. "Well, we hugged in front of the college today."
With tight cheeks, enduring herself from smiling, Eerin expressed, "uh-hm. What else?"
Nahee's shy smile grew wider. "And then, we went to Han River. Ate six corndogs and snacks and drink whatever drinks I bought."
"You guys are pig!"
Nahee laughed out loud at the comment. If it was true that the details that she told make them sound like hungry pigs, then she would throw that title to her contracted boyfriend who ate the most snack and wanted to have corndogs all by himself. She wondered how he managed to handle so much food yet, he still kept himself fit. Nahee suddenly had the idea to call him 'muscles pig' from now on.
"Look at you! All smiling and giggle. Jungkook is taking care of you well," Eerin uttered.
Nahee shyly waved her hand, trying to stop Eerin from teasing her.
The girls talk went on. All laughs and giggles and a little deep talk about their relationship, might as well a little complaints about their boyfriend and husband. Eerin was getting tired then, she excused herself to take a nap and told Nahee to take a rest while Namjoon hadn't returned.
Nahee didn't feel like wanted to sleep yet. She changed the television's channel to get an interesting show.
Remembering Namjoon, Nahee thought he might have immediately went to his entertainment company for emergency meeting regarding his hiatus. She checked the time again from her phone and then put it down with a sigh.
Eerin became deep in her dreams when the time was around eleven. Nahee kept yawning even though there was a hilarious scene on the show. Her eyes were threatened to shut. She couldn't smile or laugh as her brain was slowing down her responses.
Nahee gave up on the show. She then grabbed her phone and clicked the gallery application. Making another click at the most recent picture, the smartphone then automatically enlarged the chosen picture. A smile immediately appeared on her face when she stopped at a picture of her and Jungkook making a dork face. A giggle was then let out.
She kept scrolling until she got another idea in her mind. She moved to the home screen again and clicked on a chatting application. She changed someone's contact name into 'Muscles Pig'.

The single vertical line kept blinking. Nahee was thinking what to send but the blinking line made her sleepiness even worst.
"What should I say?" She muttered in a groggy voice.
In the end, she decided not to send a long message but short ones.

She knew Jungkook was still in the mood to joke around with her. A single laugh left her mouth.
She didn't have anymore plans in mind. She placed her phone on the bedside table beside Eerin's phone. Crossing her arms and positioned leaning on the seat, she closed eyes as a deep breath was exhaled.
**********
"Nahee-yah." The mentioned girl jumped at the soft shake and soft, deep voice trying to wake her up.
Nahee looked up, seeing her brother stood beside her. Inhaling a deep breathe, she stretched her arms forwards with her back bent. And then, arms raised up, bending her back to the back after that. A few cracks from her back made her groaning.
She then looked at her sister-in-law who was still sleeping. Her mind was still blank, her face felt tight, still she made some words with her groggy voice, "what time did you arrive?"
"Just now," Namjoon answered.
The sound of plastics rustling bothered Nahee's blank mind finally. She shot her head towards the noise and then got her phone to check the time. It was five in the morning.
"What takes you so long?"
"I went to the company and then, bought us some food." Namjoon immediately changed the topic. "Did she wake up?"
Nahee answered with a deep hum and said, "she did. And then sleep again after we talked."
"Really?" His sister nodded her head. He lightly smiled. "Did the doctor come in?" Namjoon asked again.
"The nurses did. To get her and the baby's pulse and stuff." Nahee stretched her body again with a moan this time. She then got up to approach her brother who was checking food containers and boxes in the plastics. "Oppa."
"What?"
"How are you when you fell in love, actually?"
One of Namjoon's eyebrow raised at Nahee unexpected question.
