▪ FORTY-EIGHT
The airplane landed on the ground safely. A movable staircase for the clients to leave the airplane was on stand by.
Nahee slept on Jungkook's shoulder startled when she heard an announcement made by a stewardess. She had been keeping herself on alarm just in case they arrived at Busan earlier than she expected. She tried to lift her head but couldn't because he slept on her head.
She shook his thighs lightly at first. "Jungkook-ah, wake up." But the sleepyhead didn't move. The girl tried again but with harder shake. "Jeon Jungkook." Still no response. Annoyed, she made a hard slap on his thigh and he finally woke up.
He didn't even flinched, instead he woke up as if he didn't feel the pain that the girl caused earlier. He lifted his head up and then made a glance at the window, realising the plane had landed.
On the other hand, Nahee groaned because of the cramp in her neck. She blamed that she had been resting on Jungkook's shoulder since the beginning.
Jungkook heard that. He asked, "are you okay?"
"My neck," she answered in a groggy voice.
He was half awake, but his caring side didn't stop him from giving Nahee a massage on the neck. His eyes was still shut with eyebrows furrowed when he tried to loosen his girlfriend's tensed neck.
Nahee felt a little better, she then realised people were getting lesser so she stopped the man from massaging her which later earned a puzzled look from the man's half awake face.
"We should get going," Nahee told. Jungkook nodded his head, got up and opened the cabinet above Nahee's head. He got his bag and Nahee's, handing her bag to her after that. Both of them left the airplane and then got their luggages.
When they stepped out of the airport, out of nowhere, Nahee cried out "Jejuuuu!" as she stretched her body.
Jungkook scolded her. "It's Busan, Kim Nahee. Busan!"
Nahee immediately covered her mouth, embarrassed at the mistake she just did. People who were passing by quietly laughed at her.
Her boyfriend then muttered, "aish, you're embarrassing me."
Nahee moaned in embarrassment before she turned to Jungkook. "Let's get to the car now. This is so embarrassing," she whined as she dragged her luggage, running to the car park area.
Jungkook stifled a laugh while tailing the girl from behind. Suddenly, the girl stopped which caused the man to stop immediately and almost stumbled. He stared at her with a quizzical look.
"But... Where is our car?" Nahee asked.
Jungkook snorted, a laugh almost erupted from his mouth. "Let's go." He couldn't bear his laugh anymore, so he wheezed.
Nahee heard it. She glared at him and asked, "is that funny to you?!"
The man stopped wheezing, maintaining a poker face. "No."
The moody girl grunted as she stomped her way but then she stopped again. She turned around and stared at Jungkook. "Yah!"
Jungkook got startled.
"Does the car come here by its own?!"
Jungkook laughed. He then said, "okay, okay. Let's go now."
***********
In Jungkook's opinion, coaxing Nahee was as easy as coaxing a child. He managed to coax salty Nahee that he was sorry because he laughed at her by buying her a waffle ice cream.
Nahee's moody mood cooled down while she was enjoying her ice cream and the beautiful view that passed by as the car brought them to a destination.
The speed was slow and steady, Nahee did not complain. She liked how Jungkook drove that way just to let her feel the sea view of Busan.
"We're going to stay at my house," Jungkook told, making Nahee to face at him.
Nahee chirped, "okay."
Jungkook giggled at the cute intonation Nahee just let out and continued driving.
"What are the plans while we're here?" The girl suddenly asked.
Jungkook deeply hummed for awhile to think. "I'm going to bring you everywhere. But before going to that plan, I'm going to bring you to my favorite place."
"Where is that?"
"A beach."
"Haeundae Beach?"
Jungkook's eyebrows raised. "Uhh... Haeundae beach isn't the only beach in Busan."
"Then, where is it?"
"At my favorite beach," Jungkook said with a dumb smile.
Nahee rolled her eyes. The journey became quiet again.
Jungkook parked the car when they arrived at his favourite beach. The creaking sound from the brake pulled led to Nahee unbuckling the seatbelt.
The girl was in awe at the wide field of sand with swashes pulling back and forth as the wind blew across the field. It might looked a plain field but she liked how peaceful, less visitors visiting the beach. There wasn't a single visitor passing by near the zone where the car was parked. She bet she and Jungkook were going to goof around a lot there.
Dadaepo Beach.
It only took them less that forty minutes to reach there by car from Gimhae Airport.
The couple held hands as usual and stepped on the damp sand together.
"Seems like the tide is high recently," Jungkook muttered.
Out of nowhere, Nahee said, "I want to sit and enjoy the view."
"We can't sit here. We should go to the walk way and rest there. Unless you want to get your butt wet, then I don't mind."
Nahee guffawed, Jungkook smiled when he heard her. "No, I don't."
They walked together hand in hand to the walkway, hands swung back and forth. Jungkook didn't know what made Nahee extra excited but she made a huge gap between them while not letting their hands go and then spun their arms.
Jungkook was flustered. He let out a shaky, "Nahee-yah," before the spin slowed down and Nahee laughed again. "You have fun?"
Nahee nodded as she said, "yup!"
"We don't do anything yet."
"By having you by my side is already fun."
Jungkook's lips slowly formed a grin as he stared at her and then looked away.
"You said this place is your favorite place. What did you do here?"
Jungkook let out a deep hum and then said, "I did many things here. Digging the sand, play in the water, and ran around here, play catch with my friends and my parents. I even tried to fish here even though I never got one."
Nahee giggled. "Really?"
Jungkook bobbed his head up and down.
"This place must have been very memorable to you."
"Yeah, it is."
The way became quiet as they chose a spot to stop and leant their buttocks on the smooth, wooden handle. Nahee crossed her arms, looking around and admiring this view. She had to turn her head to look at the sea and the sun across.
On the other hand, Jungkook had a plan. He stared at Nahee for awhile and then, gave her a quick kiss on her cheek. Nahee was surprised. She looked at Jungkook with eyes widened. She realised Jungkook kissed her a lot lately.
The reaction got Jungkook caught of guard. "What's wrong?" He asked. "You don't like that I kiss you?"
Nahee almost didn't know what to say. She just let out whatever her brain told her to utter. "N-no, it's not that I don't –"
"So, you like it?" Jungkook slowly moved closer to her.
Nahee's stuttering became worse as he moved closer and closer each time she voiced out. "I-I-I. Uh. I-I don't know."
Jungkook stopped when their faces were a few inches away. They were too near that Nahee leaned to the back and her palms held the handle behind her tight. His eyes were staring at hers in a way Nahee couldn't describe. Her pupils dilated as he got nearer. She had never had a man did this to her that could cause her heart beat hard in her chest.
If any guys did that to her, she would always end up kicking them on the part where the sun never shine. She didn't do it on purpose, of course. It was a reflex.
Strangely, she did not kick Jungkook. She was a little intimidated by it instead. She couldn't tell if this intimidation was a good one or bad one.
Jungkook showed a short smile as he pulled back. He then walked away, leaving confused Nahee alone at the spot. "Let's go now."
Nahee gasped. "I'm not even done with the view yet!"
"You can look for it in Naver."
The girl whined, "aiee! Jungkook-ahhh! Can we take a picture together, at least?"
Jungkook continued walking while Nahee was begging him with all sorts of methods she could think of. When Nahee was desperate, she ended her sulking intonation in a cute way. Jungkook was caught of guard, he was flustered and he had to stop walking to laugh.
Jungkook couldn't help but to lose for the girl. As his laugh faded, he went back to her as he said, "okay, okay."
They took a few pictures at the beach's walkway. Nahee did many types of poses and Jungkook just followed along.
She even pressed his cheeks with one hand to the point his lips reminded her of a fish. She jutted out her lips, copying his lips without his help while facing him. It was as though she wanted to make fun of him. This unexpected idea had Jungkook's eyebrows creased.
She managed to snap a picture of that. On the other hand, Jungkook begged her to delete that picture and it's not like Nahee would listen to him.
Nahee kept saying it was the best and cutest picture while Jungkook argued that it wasn't the cutest face he ever had in a picture. Nahee guffawed. When Jungkook was about to grab her phone, Nahee reflexed. She ran along the walkway with giggles, not wanting Jungkook to delete that picture.
Jungkook was not mad or upset about it, but he loved it how they ended up playing catch and as he caught Nahee, she was in his embrace as she avoided the man's hands that tried to get the phone.
That area filled with laughter, squeal from the girl and tiny arguments about the picture.
**********
They went to Jungkook's house next.
When the car stopped in the yard and in front of the house, Jungkook stared at it for a few moment. All the memories he had with his parents came in mind and a bitter smile formed on his lips when he remembered how he got reprimanded for breaking one of his mother's plant's pot. It was a bitter yet sweet memory.
"Jungkook," Nahee called. Jungkook faced her. "Are you going to be okay?"
Jungkook smiled at her. "I have you. When I'm with you, I'm always okay."
Nahee didn't know what to say. She wished that she wasn't the reason for him to mask his sadness. Of course, she would to love see him happy but she didn't want to be the reason for his sadness to be bottled inside.
She snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Jungkook reminded, "we're going to sleep here until we finish our vacation."
"But are you sure you're going to be okay? Since you just found our about your family's truth, I'm worried, you know."
"It's okay. Like I said, I have you. At a time like this, only you can keep me sane."
Nahee couldn't say a word. She only nodded her head, finalising to let him to decide whatever he wanted.
She didn't see his words as a burden but she didn't know what to feel about that. It felt like she had a responsibility for Jungkook but at the time, she did not have anything to do with the problems that he had, so she was questioning what should she do if she made a mistake like saying something sensitive that related to the problem he had by accident. Apologising would be easy, but she didn't think that it would rub off the mistake she made entirely.
Jungkook might look like a tough guy, but he had a side that no one could dig in real deep. That one side when he was fragile and he needed someone by his side. He only showed that to Nahee (after GaEun). That one night, when he wept and hearing him telling her that he needed her, had never left her mind.
She then thought maybe she could change the sadness into happiness and would find ways to erase his sadness even if it meant to be a short time.
This chance. She was going to use it properly. Once they return to Seoul, there would be no more chance.
They went into the house after taking out their luggages and unlocked the door.
Nahee looked around and smelled the smell of wood and a little smell like an old book when she entered. The living room was not fancy but a simple, traditional Korean style with modern furnitures in it. Sofas were clad with white cloth, taken off by Jungkook and thrown it to the ground.
"I'm going to clean these up for you," he said.
"I help," the girl offered.
"No, it's okay. Just dusting off the dust won't take long. Go and put your things in my room."
"Where is it?" Nahee asked.
Jungkook pointed at a direction. "From that way, you'll see two door on both sides. The left one is my room."
"Where are you going to sleep, Jungkook?"
Jungkook halted his movements for awhile. He then smirked. "With you."
Nahee silently gasped. "C-can I sleep alone?"
Jungkook laughed out loud when seeing Nahee's reaction. "I'm joking. I'll sleep at my parents room."
Nahee scrunched her nose and grunted as she glared the man. It seemed like Jungkook's hobby of teasing her wouldn't give her a break.
She didn't complain much as she brought her luggage with her to the room. When she saw the room, the realised it told her the small story of the owner of the room.
A wooden shelf at the corner filled with comics and books. There was a table with one signed BIGBANG album and then, there was a picture frame.
Nahee couldn't see it clearly as the sunlight reflected on the glass and it blocked her view. She went nearer to the table and finally saw what she wanted to see. She raised the frame up to get a clearer image.
A picture of a girl in teenage Jungkook's arm and both of them a peace sign on the hands. The girl had a ponytail. She wore short sleeved white blazer, a short dark blue tie and short skirt. Her smile was a shy one unlike Jungkook who had a wide grin, showing his teeth to the camera. Her sharp eyes then caught a black or somewhat a dark blue spot on one of the girl's forearm.
'Bruise?' She mentally asked herself. She shrugged it off quickly as she couldn't find an explanation to the foundation.
Then, Nahee spotted a yellow nameplate stuck on the girl's right chest.
"Kang GaEun," she read.
Just at the right time, she heard Jungkook at the door, "Nahee?"
Nahee turned her head, her hand was still holding the frame. Jungkook looked down at her hand.
Jungkook didn't get mad or tried to snatch the frame from her. Instead, he bitterly smiled at her. "Uhm... I'm going out to buy some things. Do you want anything?" He asked and then made a short glance at the picture frame in Nahee's hand.
Nahee put it down at its respective place, feeling bad for touching his stuff without his permission started to engulf her. "I don't think I want anything."
Jungkook nodded, "okay."
"Wait, Jungkook."
Jungkook halted himself while looking at her with eyebrows raised. "Yes?"
"I'm sorry."
Jungkook understood what the apology was for. He let out a soft chuckle. "It's fine," He said. "Just don't go around breaking my things!"
Nahee was relieved that Jungkook wasn't angry at her especially after finding a picture of him and GaEun. She wondered if he had moved on from GaEun then.
But what if he hadn't and seeing her found it wasn't a big deal for him since they were only contracted?
But what about the chance that she accepted from Jungkook? Or had it got cancelled without her knowing?
