For as long as you can remember, you've worn eye glasses. Your parents always made sure you had them on and you formed the habit. One day, you forget them and realize you can see something no one else can.

Winning Comment:

I didn't notice anything peculiar at first. The crowded streets of New York City bustled with chatter and the sounds of traffic like usual. People passed, paying me no mind.

I was running late. The meeting I should have been running started five minutes ago. Losing my glasses this morning screwed me over big time. I wasted half my time trying to find the worthless things only to find that I can see just fine without them. So screw them.

A hard force knocked me out of my thoughts, sending me sprawling backward on the sidewalk.

"Hey!" I shouted, irritated.

"Watch where you're going," the man replied.

I looked up at him, expecting a middle-aged man by the sound of his voice. But what stared back at me was something that came from Hollywood.

Half of his face met my expectations. Wrinkles, drooping eyelids, and jowls hanging past his jaw like a bulldog. But the other half looked as if it had been pressed against a fire. Burns covered the man's face.

I scrambled back. Finding my footing, I ran, pushing past people.

Every face I saw now had a similar appearance.

 Half-normal, half-nightmare.

A woman had a knife sticking out of her head. One man was missing an eye.

No matter where I turned, a new face awaited.

A hand gripped my shoulder, forcing me to turn around. "Are you okay?" It was the man from earlier.

"Wha-why are you following me?"

"You took off your glasses. You've awakened your gift."

"What? What gift?"

"James, you can see how people die."
