Here are the rules:

The challenge stands under the general prompt "Discovery". Please choose one of the prompts at the end of the chapter to write a story. Your story must fit one of the ten prompts, be about a discovery and qualify as science fiction.

Your story can be maximum 5000 words long.

Please publish the story on your profile, either as a stand-alone story or as a chapter in an existing anthology. Only one chapter, please.

The challenge runs until July 18th, 23.59 UTC. This gives you six weeks to send us your best story.

1. Noise in the void: There is nothing in the vast emptiness surrounding the planet... Or so we thought. Open your mind and your ears to the void, listen to the silence... Here, a noise... there, another... various frequencies of busy activity all around the magnetosphere... Some say it is just the sound of the electrons being tossed from one side to another... But what if it was the sign of a whole world we can't see?

3. Red beacon: Somewhere, far away in the expanse of the Universe, a red beacon is burning...

4. Headline: You open your morning newspaper to be greeted by the following headline, "Amazing Time Travel Discovery!" What is the discovery and how does it affect you / your m/c?

5. Courage: "Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore." — Andre Gide

6. Rumours: There were always rumors that alternate universes exist, but nobody could prove they are real. But then THE enlightenment came to you—and you knew exactly how to prove their existence.

7. Telescope: The new space telescope was meant to tell us more about the origins of the universe. But it also paved the way to an astounding discovery.

8. Past: While exploring a closed-off area of the city, you learn a little bit about how life used to be in decades and centuries past.

9. Underground: Earth has been mapped, measured, and studied to the T. Nothing to discover anymore, right? But then, a mining team makes a revolutionary discovery.

10. River Time: "Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong is its current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away." — Marcus Aurelius
