Cliche Contest Story
I adjusted my glasses, looking out of the classroom window. There he was again. That boy.
He was watching the teacher, but I had guessed by now he wasn't paying complete attention. His brown eyes were blankly staring at the board, his pencil dangling in front of the paper. Nope. Definitely not paying attention.
I sighed, shaking my head. Why was I even watching him? It frustrated me, but made me interested all at once.
He was popular, and I was a nerd. When he went to the big game of Friday night, I stayed home for calculus. While he threw a football, my nose would be buried into a good book.
"Lily?" I jumped, my pencil clattering to the floor. The teacher's stern look came upon me. "Please stop staring outside, and listen to my lesson." I nodded quickly. "Yes, sir. I apologize." A couple of airy laughs came from students across the room.
My face went red, and I looked down, my brown hair falling in front of my eyes. My best friend nudged me, and gave my pencil. "You're look at him, aren't you Lily." She whispered. "You got me, Anna. Don't worry, it's fine." "Going to the dance tonight?" Anna asked. "Yeah, probably. I need to socialize at some point." Anna laughed. "No kidding. I heard-"
"Can this wait, after class?" The teacher said. "Yes sir." Anna mumbled, her face almost as red as her hair. I looked down, and busied myself with taking notes. I took one last look at Dean, the popular boy. He ruffled his dirty blonde hair, and got up as his class ended.
I couldn't help but wonder if he was going to the dance.
Once the bell had rung for the last period of the day, I went to my locker, shoving my tons of books into my bag. I glanced towards a couple lockers down, and as soon as I did, my heart felt like it slipped down five flights of steps.
Dean was talking to a girl named Sarah. It seemed to be a serious talk. Then Sarah smiled, and nodded. My throat clenched as Dean kissed her.
I blinked hard, and turned, walking away. Don't let it bother you. It's not like you had a chance with him anyway. Sarah, the perfect girl. She got everything she could ever want.
After leaving the school, I kept taking off my glasses and wiping my eyes, trying to make the rapidly approaching tears go away.
When I got home, I threw my back pack to the side, and I fell into my bed. I kept my face buried in my pillow. After a good minute of me pushing away my despair, I sat up, my phone ringing with a message.
Anna: hey, u alright? I didn't see u on the bus today
Lily: yeah, I just walked home
Anna: what happened? U usually ride on the bus all the time
Lily: Idk
Anna: well, are u gonna ask Dean to the dance tonight?
Lily: no
Anna: why not?
Lily: i saw him kissing Sarah
Anna: oh lily. Are u alright? Do u wanna come to my house?
Lily: no, it's fine. Really
Anna: are u sure?
Lily: yep
Anna: listen, I gotta go. I'll talk to you later
Lily: bye
I sat back in my bed, staring at the ceiling. Why am I being so dramatic? I wasn't even brave enough to ask him to the dance. I should probably just stay home and watch Netflix instead of going. As far as I knew, Anna didn't have a date. She was still going.
"Lily?"
I heard a knock on the door. "Yeah, come in." I replied. My mother walked into my room. "Hey, honey. You alright?" I nodded, so quickly my glasses nearly fell off. "Yeah. Fine."
My mother raised an eyebrow quizzically. "I know you too well, dear." "Alright." I bit my lip. "You remember Dean, right?" My mother nodded. She had brown hair, like me. "He...he's going out with Sarah." Mom clicked her tongue. "Lily...it isn't always about boys." "I know, I know. I just wish I had someone to go to the dance with."
Mom shook her head. "Sweetie, you can still go to the dance. And you can still rock it." I looked up, and smiled a bit. "Are you sure?" "Of course."
After an hour, mom curled my hair, and gave me a long, white dress. I smiled, looking at myself in the mirror. "Thanks, mom." I hugged her tightly. I'll see you after the dance."
I drove to the dance in my car, feeling slightly nervous. I checked in the mirror. I looked okay.
I walked into the school, when it was the slow dance. I fixed my glasses. The soft music played in the background, and then my eyes landed on Dean and Sarah. Dean looked handsome in a suit and tie, and Sarah wore a blue dress, which went well with her blonde hair.
My face went hot as Dean's eyes landed on me. He looked astonished. Sarah asked him something. Dean responded, still looking at me. Sarah shook him more earnestly. Dean shook his head, and said something to her. They seemed to argue for a moment, and then Sarah ran away, her face in her hands.
I was surprised, and also a little flustered as Dean came up to me, ruffling his hair. "Hi, Lily." I blinked. "Hello, Dean." Dean smiled. "You look beautiful." I blushed. "Thank you." I glanced behind him. Anna had saw me, and gave me a thumbs up.
I smiled. Dean rubbed the back of his neck. "Would you like to dance with me?"
This was my moment. I could finally dance with my crush. I was so happy I felt giddy. I was very tempted, and was about to nod, when I caught a glimpse of Sarah.
Her eyes were red from crying, and she was sitting alone away from the dance. "What about Sarah?" Dean didn't seem to be bothered. "Oh, I...I saw you, and.." Realization took over.
"Thanks Dean. But no thanks." I smiled. "Though I know someone who would like to dance." I pointed to Anna, who looked surprised. Dean turned to me. "I seem like a jerk, but-" "It's fine. We can always be friends." Dean smiled. And then he turned, to a very wide-eyed Anna. I heard them speaking, and then Anna nodded. I nodded, satisfied.
I walked over to Sophie. "Hey." She rubbed her eyes, looking embarrassed. "Hi." "I kind of want to leave." I said to her. "And you look...sad. I think a girl's night should be in order." Sarah's face slowly turned into a smile. "I'll take you with that offer."
"Sounds good."

And that's how me and Sarah became best friends, along with Anna and her boyfriend Dean.
This seems like a cliche, but I guess, not really.
For ThatBlondeSlytherin this is my entry!
