The Rainbow Dress

A/N: This is for fangirl_potato_ 's Harry potter fanfic contest. I hope it isn't late, It's still Monday here in America but you live in a very different time zone so I'm not sure. It's 756 words, and took me, like, half an hour to write (I was grounded from my computer and had no time at all) Also, I'm actually not a big fan of romance at all and I've never written serious romance before so cut me some slack. (I almost puked about 3 times as I was writing this) So basically, this is an all-around failure .-.

Luna stepped in front of the mirror and smiled. Her dress wasn't a very traditional dress for a wedding, but Luna had never cared about following tradition anyways. The dress was made from bright rainbow fabric, purposely stitched together so there wasn't any pattern to all of the colors. She also wore a tiara of silver unicorn horns atop her head. It definitely wasn't a dress anyone would forget, and Luna absolutely loved it.

Luna was going to marry Rolf Scamander, who went to Hogwarts the same to she did, but she never really met him until afterwards. They were both Magizoologists and had met while doing field work, and their similar interests in magical animals helped them to connect. Luna actually wasn't sure if Rolf would approve of the dress. He was shy, and easily embarrassed because of it.

Thinking about Rolf must have magically summoned him, because the door opened and there he was. At first he was smiling, but his expression quickly changed to one of shock. "Luna, what are you wearing?" He asked.

"It's my wedding dress," Luna said, a little nervous. "And you aren't supposed to see it until the wedding. It's bad luck."

Rolf sighed and closed the door behind him. "Luna, bad luck doesn't exist."

"Of course it does, when has it not?"

Rolf shook his head. "I guess it doesn't matter. But why are you wearing that for our wedding? It's... it doesn't look like a wedding dress, and to be honest it's a mess."

Luna felt her heart drop. "Well I think it's pretty."

Rolf shook his head. "People are going to laugh at us. You've got to stop acting like this."

"I'm used to people laughing at me."

Rolf struggled to say something. "Listen, there's still time to get a better dress if we hurry." He tried to grab Luna's hand, but she stepped back.

"Rolf, maybe this won't work if you can't handle me the way I am."

Rolf looked down at the floor. "I love you Luna, I really do, and I'm trying to get used to you, but... I just can't handle it sometimes."

"That's fine," Luna said, concerned about how sad he looked. "We can still be friends, right? But I don't think we're made to live our lives together."

Rolf was still for a long time, but then nodded. "This is a strange request, but, um, can I have the engagement ring back?"

Luna slipped the ring off her finger and looked at it one last time. She wasn't disappointed to see it go. It was just a typical diamond ring. "I hope you find someone else to give it to," She said as she handed it over.

"And I hope she's as nice as you are." Rolf gave a painful smile. "I guess I'll go tell the wedding guests they can leave."

Luna ended up sitting on the lawn in front of the church, watching everyone they had invited apparate after saying their goodbyes. She felt horribly alone. Most of her friends had found someone to love long ago, but there seemed to be nobody in the world who would love her the way she was.

Luna heard a grunt as somebody sat down next to her. She looked over at them. It was Neville, dressed in a fancy suit and tie.

"Hey Luna," He said.

Luna smiled. "Hi."

"So... what happened? Why aren't you getting married?" He asked.

Luna shrugged. "He doesn't like how I'm different, I guess. Nothing horribly bad happened."

Neville nodded. "That's good. I don't want you to get hurt."

Luna shrugged. "I'm fine. A little disappointed, but that's all. How are you and Hannah Abbot doing? Have you proposed to her yet?"

Neville looked down at his hands and shook his head. "She doesn't really want children, but I do."

"I think twins would be nice," Luna said.

Neville smiled. "Really? I think that would be a bit too much for me."

"I'm sure you would be a wonderful father," Luna said.

"And I bet you'd be a great mother," Neville replied. They stared at each other in silence for a few moments, and Neville slowly put his hand over hers.

"That's a very pretty dress you know," Neville said, finally breaking the silence.

"Really?" Luna asked. "Rolf didn't like it."

Neville nodded. "And your tiara matches your eyes."

Luna smiled. "Thank you." She found herself leaning her head against Neville's shoulder, and there they sat for a while.

Luna didn't feel lonely ever again.
