For You I Will Fly

RainWash22 Here is my entry, I hope you enjoy it! ^_^

The air is crisp, leaves softly gliding through the wind, landing on the ground in an array of yellows, browns, and reds with hints of green still at the tips of some leaves. The road was filled with these leaves that rose over it in a canopy as if protecting it from the world outside, creating its own. There wasn't a peaceful, silence though to accompany the scene, rather large crunches from leaves being crushed under foot of two medium sized dragons that walked the road. One with a lovely shade of violet scales, a small horn lifting from her forehead as smaller ones were near her nose, eyes, and jaw, her wings a soft cream and a few shades from transparent. Her walk was graceful and softer against the ground than her partner's more heavy and slightly insecure footsteps. Her owner sat tall on her back, looking up at the blazing arch of leaves and limbs as they passed under, his brown hair seeming to fit perfectly with color of the oak tree's bark that they were passing and his soft brown eyes held so much happiness and hope.
The other dragon was a little smaller than the first, his slick scales were a silvery grey but were dull and his ears were more rounded than normal dragon ears, his wings a transparent white and oddly shaped, in fact it was in such a way in which he couldn't fly, but his owner who was lying on her back on his own back didn't care, she loved him for his loyalty and friendship. Her black hair slightly gleamed in the pockets of sunlight, her blue eyes taking in the beautiful trees as they released leaves to surround the two in a wonderful display of color.
This had been one of the rare moments the two riders, which were what people who trained and rode on dragons were called in the Dorivan army, and the two dragons had a moment away from all the warfare, wreckage, and destruction of the tiring war both had been fighting for two years. It was finally there turn to get a little leave from all the chaos and enjoy a week home to relax which neither could complain about since it was better than not getting to have a break whatsoever.
As the four exited the tunnel of trees however, a pale yellow flash came out of nowhere, grabbing the silver dragon's rider and flying off with her into the sky. "Layla!" The boy yelled in panic, surprised at this sudden attack as well as the two dragons were, "Come on, Stormfly after her!" The pair took off into the sky, chasing after Layla while the dragon who could not raced after them on land, trying to stay in pace with them, but they soon were getting farther away, and the poor dragon roared desperately, "Wait! Jayden! Stormfly! I-I can't..."
He sighed, knowing they couldn't hear him, sadly he clawed the dirt as he felt pain in his heart, "I guess all I can do is wait at the house for them to return, I'm so utterly useless." He dragged his limbs across the ground as he walked home alone, in the solitude of his own isolation. In the war, he was amazingly useful since the enemies don't expect dragons to come by land so he and his owner, Layla, they usually are the ones leading a ground team. He always felt so proud charging at the enemies first, knowing he was leading his kingdom closer to victory. Every time though, when he sees all the other dragons flying, he can't help but feel that want, to soar into the sky and feel the power of the wind against him as he could see Earth in a whole new view. But, he was destined to be a flightless dragon, and it would seem a lonesome one until the others came home.

The silver dragon heard a familiar name calling out, "Peng! Peng! We are back, we got Layla but we are going to have to treat her wounds." He opened his eyes, stretching his wings as he stood up from the dew covered ground, his body stiff. Stormfly was landing just outside the house which is where he went and met them, the sun rising softly behind them. Jayden hopped off of Stormfly's back, protectively holding Layla close to him, she was unconscious and Peng could not tell how injured she was, gently, he nudged her leg, making a small and almost sad grunting sound as Jayden assured the dragon, "I will take good care of her. Help out Stormfly, I think she got a cut. Please, I should really attend to Layla." Peng dips his head and the boy hurries inside to take care of the one he had secretly loved for the past two years they had been allied together in fighting the war.
As the two dragons walked behind the house where an area was set up for them, Peng asked quietly, his eyes cloudy and distant, "What happened? Please, I must know Stormfly."
The violet dragon sighed softly, "I know, I just wish you wouldn't always ask, you can't blame yourself for anything like you always try too."
He didn't respond and so she just sighed again, "Alright, we took off and chased that awful dragon quite a few miles until... he let go of her, and she was plummeting through the sky, we dove down after her, and luckily Jayden grabbed her in enough time for us to not end up dead."
Peng remained quiet, his scales glowing a soft yellow in the few early rays of morning, but his head was downcast, his body slouched in defeat.
"I-I should have been able to save her! This isn't fair, it isn't!" He roared, causing Stormfly to jump a little, her eyes soft with understanding.
She came up beside her torn friend with a small smile, "Then how about we just teach you?"
Peng looked up at her with a slight hint of hope but mainly there was doubt, "Stormfly, I can't, we have tried before."
She nudged his side, "Well, we just haven't tried hard enough! Come on! Maybe this time you will be able too!"

Peng stood at the top of a gentle hill, slowly pressing downwards to a plain where Stormfly was watching, he had let the cheerful dragon convince him into this and know looked down anxiously. The soft wind that blew against his side seemed intensified in his fear as he kept his wings closed and folded against his sides.
"Come on! You just need to have a little faith Peng!" Stormfly shouted with a smile, causing the fear to melt away from the silver dragon as he opened his transparent wings that gleamed in the sunlight, tensing his muscles as he took the leap off the hill, time seeming to slow as he glided through the air, feeling a rush of joy and adrenaline, he had finally done it! Well, that was until he went crashing into the grassy slope and tumbled the rest of the way down, up heaving loads of dirt as he went until he came crashing down at Stormfly's feet with dirt covering portions of him while he had to spit sneeze out some that had made it's way into his nose.
"Well, we will just keep trying, that's all, it might just take a few times to get it down," Stormfly remarked, trying to be positive for Peng's sake.
The day was spent with the smaller silver dragon jumping off various hills and small cliffs, and failing to accomplish flight every single time. The sun was near the horizon once more, long shadows dancing on the ground as Peng's hopes were depleted and his body sore and covered in dirt.
The violet dragon however tried to turn his defeat into an eye opener, "You know Peng, there are not many dragons that are flightless, it's rare, and you shouldn't take that for granted, it means you're incredibly special and unique! After all, your name is Penguin, maybe it was just meant to be this way, and that's not bad, because Layla loves you even if you can't fly."
Peng just shrugged, his gaze distant as his eyes roamed the landscape before a mountain caught his eye, the color of it almost seeming gold in the dying light. His hope was reignited as a plan came to mind.
"Stormfly, what if I jumped from that mountain? Surely I could fly!" Peng exclaimed with a grin as Stormfly turned her head to the mountain, her face filling with fear.
"Peng, it wouldn't work, you would die if you tried that, please, I know you want to fly, but don't put your life in danger, none of us want to lose you."

The night was cool, only a few clouds lazily floated through the sky while Jayden slept in a chair next to Layla's bed, silver light softly filtering into the room from a large and admiring moon, touching all the Earth and its people with the softest silver light it could supply, enjoying it's good work. Stormfly lay curled up on a pile of sticks covered in a soft layer of leaves while Peng stood alone in the quiet, looking up at the stars, thousands dotting the sky.
"No matter what, I will do what it takes to be there and protect Layla, even if I have to risk losing my life to learn how to fly I will learn how to fly. Because for you Layla, I would fly to the ends of the Earth just to make you happy, and I can't lose you. I-I can't let you down when you need me in desperate times and so I know that with this crazy and foolish act I conduct it out of love to my best friend and the sweetest girl there is."
He looks over at the violet dragon whose cream wings shown a silvery white in the night, smiling with a hint of sadness as he knew this could be the last time he would see her.
"Thank you Stormfly, for always having my back, and my heart."

Peng stood on the edge of the mountain, looking down on the gentle and dark Earth that lay below him. The wind was faint, as ghost of a whisper if even that. Slowly, he opened his wings as his heart speed up with fear and anticipation which tightened his stomach, but he wouldn't back down. He jumped.
There was a moment of pause, where he felt suspended in the clam air before he started plummeting, the wind suddenly becoming intense and icy as he dropped out of the sky. He tried to keep his wings stretched out and open, but the air kept pressing them to his sides forcefully.
The ground was coming too quickly, there wasn't time to pull up even if he could.
"I flew Layla," he whispered, "I flew."
He saw a shadowy blur racing towards him, but he hit the pile of boulders before the could reach him. His body lying motionless as the moon's rays transformed into a solemn thin blue that made the Earth appear it was also lamenting as Peng remained still on top of the boulders, his blood slowly trailing down a few.

Layla opened her eyes, the world a little blurry at first, but after blinking a few times, it was restored to clear vision, but what she saw worried her. Jayden sat in a chair next to her bedside, tears streaming down his face as he cried bitterly.
"Jayden?" Layla asked softly, causing Jayden to stiffen, turning to her with pained eyes, "What's wrong?"
Jayden sniffed a few times before replying, "I-it's Peng."

Stormfly rested her head softly on top of Peng's, golden tears falling down her cheeks, glistening on her scales as she gently pawed his left fore foot with hers. "Penguin, why did you do this? Why did you have to believe you needed to fly so bad."
Peng slowly opened his eyes, whispering, "S-storm?"
The female dragon exploded into more tears, yelling, "Peng! You have had us all worried! I woke up and you weren't here so I got Jayden and we went to the mountain, but we were too late a-and you weren't moving, you weren't moving and you were bleeding. I thought you had died, never do such an idiotic thing like that ever again!"
Peng smiled weakly, "I love you too Stormfly."
She was a little surprised by what he said, but she had thought he liked her for quite a while, she shook her head, "I love you too, and I don't want you to die, you don't need to know how to fly, you are perfect the way you are here with me, Jayden, and Layla, and don't let anyone tell you different. Okay?"
The silver dragon shook his head slightly, "You're right, I almost lost everything because I thought I wasn't good enough, but then I would have lost everyone I loved by trying to do something I can't. I won't try to fly again, ever, I realize now I have too much at stake."
Stormfly nods with a smile, a few golden tears still falling off her scales as the backdoor of the house is opened, both dragons turned to see a crying Layla, being assisted over by a broken Jayden.
Layla fell to her knees, wrapping her arms around Peng's neck, hugging him as she cried, "P-Peng, you know I love you even though you can't fly which is the thing I love most about you and I never want to lose you! You have saved my life dozens upon dozens of times and I couldn't have asked for a better friend and loyal companion, but please, don't risk your life trying to fly for me. I don't want to live in a world without you, please, don't leave me here, because that would be the worst thing you could ever do. Promise me, that you won't risk your life doing stupid stunts in order to try and save me ever again."
This point, she was looking into his eyes and a tear fell down Peng's cheek as he nodded, whispering, "Layla, for you, I will try."
