Burning Stars

Pearl sat alone on the edge of the Sky Arena, finding herself here more often each week as she thought about how much Steven's powers were just like Rose's, well, they were her's. Why did she give up her form just to give birth to a half gem and half human boy? She truly loved Steven and never wanted to see him hurt, but she couldn't help selfishly want her Rose back. She sighed, getting up and walking back to the warp, not letting her thoughts stray too much, knowing they would get dangerous. She just needed to trust that Rose made the right decision, like she always had done to take care of them.

Steven and the gems were on the beach, casually hanging out as only gems did. Garnet and Amethyst were playing volleyball their way while Steven tried to referee it as much as he could. His father, Greg, was there as well cooking up some hotdogs on a grill, keeping his eye on Steven to make sure he was safe and Pearl sat a little ways from the group, focusing on self meditation. Suddenly through all the laughter, comments, and parental worries, a scream pierced the air and Pearl opened her eyes, immediately jumping to standing. Her eyes widened in fear as she saw Holo Pearl with her bladed spear impaling Steven through the chest. It seemed like it took forever to run to his side, tears forming in her eyes as she finally reached his side, Holo Pearl gone, and Garnet gently holding the wounded Steven in her arms. He wasn't bleeding, but it was obvious the wound was too severe for him to live. Everyone was crying, even Garnet as they watched their precious boy slip away. Amethyst put her hand on his and Greg turned away as Steven turned his head toward Pearl. "G-gems can't die," Pearl stuttered, tears flowing down her face, "O-our Steven can't die," she looked into his own tear stained face, hoping everything would be alright, but there was no hope.
Steven gently croaked, "P-pearl... I'm a universe, and universes go on forever, they never die." Both of them smiled sadly at each other as his body faded away, leaving Rose's gem. Everyone just stared at it, not knowing what to do anymore, Steven was gone, just like that. Suddenly, the gem rose into the air and a familiar form took shape. Rose Quartz in all her beauty formed in the center of their grieving group, and had her back to Pearl.
"Rose!" Pearl cried out, happy to see her beloved leader, friend... Suddenly Rose turned to her, Rose's eyes instead of their normal pink were just completely black and black tears flowed down her cheeks as she whispered, "Pearl, what have you done to my son?"
Pearl woke up with a yelp of fear as she heaved deeply. After she had gone to the Sky Arena, she decided to try and sleep again, still not understanding the concept of dreams, were they subtly telling you something about your future, or was it more of your deep emotions? It didn't matter now! That dream, it crossed too many lines! She stood up from her water tower and quickly exited her room, warping back to the Sky Arena where she knew she would be alone.
When she arrived, she fell to her knees screaming, "Why must this dream hurt the ones I love! Take away one so I can get another back only for them to accuse me of the death of the other! I want Rose Quartz back so badly but I would never kill my Steven for her would I?!" She made her way back to the ledge, watching the midnight sky, stars speckling the darkness in countless numbers. Steven's last words echoed through her mind, 'I'm a universe, and universes go on forever, they never die.' She just, couldn't understand these raging emotions inside, one wanting to end Steven's life so she could have Rose back, the other trying to fight the plague of madness, hoping to stop herself from hurting those she loves. With all the madness in her heart, she decided to sing it to the universe:
"Oh what are these violent strains
That hold onto my brain
And are driving me insane
Now why is it telling me to kill the one I love
For another who gave up her life
For her beloved son.
Please Rose Quartz if you hear me
Help silence these violent needs
Before they become tendencies
And take over everything.
Your words how the heal
And now how they hurt
Without you to reassure me
And though I still miss
The warmth of your bliss
I wouldn't ever hurt the boy you gave to me.
Please Rose Quartz if you hear me
Help silence these violent needs
Before they become tendencies
And take over everything.
Long are these days
And dark are the trials
That exceed me
Though you still burn in my memory
You are like a star in the night
How they burn
How the shine
How they dim
How they die.
Oh Rose if you can hear me
I am desperately in need
I am on the verge of insanity
So please somehow rescue me."
Pearl finished the last part and just sat there, watching the stars burning in the sky, some starting dim as they were going to die, and some still bright and young. Rose would always be the brightest star in the sky, never dimming, never dying.

It has been a week since the dream and Garnet called the other two together, having noticed Pearl's odd attitude lately.
"There is something wrong with Pearl," Garnet stated calmly to the two on the couch, Steven had a look of concern, sitting forward in thought as Amethyst stretched out her body along the rest of the couch, not seeming to care as usual.
"So what if she is acting different? Maybe she is just becoming a little less strict and stiff, maybe she will actually play Steven tag with us!" Amethyst joked with a smile as she poked Steven in the side. Steven didn't even look at Amethyst, only looked up at Garnet with concern filling his eyes.
"We should ask her about it," Steven suggested.
"Might not be the best approach," Garnet replied as she adjusted her glasses.
"But asking her would be the fastest way and what if it's something wrong with her gem and-"
"Alright we will ask her," Garnet interrupted, knowing he would have just gone through a whole lists of scenarios, besides, she knew it would make him happy. Steven smiled as Amethyst just shrugged, "Ehh, I still say we see where it goes, but whatever."

Amethyst as usual stayed behind, claiming to be too lazy to go help them check on Pearl. When the two arrived on the warp pad in the Sky Arena, both were taken aback by the gem they found there. She had Pearl's body and her bladed staff, but the way she was slicing into one of the pillars maliciously with a look that could be described as a death hate towards the object left the two in fear of what Pearl had become. She was no longer the clam, collected, and neat freak Pearl, she was a monster who's only purpose was to find and kill. Steven out of his kind and naive personality raced towards her, yelling her name before Garnet could stop him.
"Steven!" She yelled with fear but the name landed on deaf ears as Steven continued up to Pearl.
"Pearl!" Steven exclaimed, causing Pearl to stop right where she was, frozen by his voice, "Pearl, what's happening? Why are you so mad?"
Pearl slowly turned to him, the look in her eyes wild as tears ran down her face, "Your personality reminds me of her, the star on your shirt right where her's was on her dress, her gem in the same place on both of you, everything about you reminds me of her! But you aren't her! I-I can't live without her anymore Steven! I'm sorry," The last two words were in a whisper as Pearl raised her staff, the blade pointed at Steven.
He cringed away, his eyes filled with fear as he looked into her eyes, "P-pearl, what are you doing? It's me Steven." She didn't respond as she brought her staff down, aiming to strike his chest, but it was blocked by his shield, Rose's shield. Pearl angrily yelled at him, "That isn't yours!" She raised her staff once more, but Garnet grabbed it from her.
"Enough Pearl," she growled softly, snapping the staff in it half to make it poof away. Pearl jumped slightly, but she was far from reason by now and screamed as loud as she could, "He isn't her! He isn't Rose!!" Her screams of agony accompanied the tears streaming down her face as she tried to hit Steven with another bladed staff, but it was cut short by Garnet grabbing it. In her enraged and blind pain, Pearl leapt over Garnet, grabbing Steven by the throat, starting to choke him ruthlessly. Steven had tears running down his face, "P-pearl..." Pearl stooped for a moment, hesitating to end him which gave Garnet the time to grab her and throw her into the ground, the impact causing her to go back into her gem. Garnet went to Steven's side, quickly picking up the boy, tears slipping out from her glasses as she tried to comfort Steven, "W-why was Pearl trying to kill me?" Steven whimpered as Garnet held him close, rubbing his back softly while she looked at Pearl's gem lying in the impact crater. "I don't know Steven, I really don't know what made her snap."
****Little star***** in the sky***** never burn out****** never die******* for you have alway been here for me****** please keep safe the ones dear to me****** for Pearl I know you miss me so****** but please see me in my son when you're in woe****** he is dear to me just like you are***** please don't cry on my brightest star.
Pearl reformed, finding herself in the living room with Garnet sitting closest to her, Steven on the other side for protections. Amethyst sat at the counter, stuffing her face with taco meat as she watched Pearl warily. In fact, the whole atmosphere was tense, and Pearl knew she had messed up, she destroyed everything. "S-Steven..." When she said his name, his face grimaced and she bit her lip, knowing she had hurt someone she loved. Suddenly, tears were falling down her face, she was surprised by them, dripping down her face to hit the ground. She put her hands over her face, feeling ashamed for crying, for hurting Steven, for letting herself become a monster. She felt a pair of short arms wrap around her and opened her hands to see Steven hugging her, "It's okay Pearl, I know you miss Rose. I'm sorry I'm not her, I don't want you to be this sad." Pearl crumbled to her knees, wrapping her arms around Steven as she cried, shaking her head, "No Steven, it was my fault. I-I never wanted to hurt you. I tried to get rid of the pain and it led to anger and... I love you Steven, because Rose gave us to you and you are a very special boy. I see Rose everyday through you, her leadership, compassion, gentleness, and even some of her humor. I wouldn't trade you for her, honestly." Steven smiled up at Pearl, even Garnet was smiling. Amethyst decided this would be the perfect time to interject, "Okay, enough feelings stuff, come on, let's go look at the stars!" No one questioned it, the moment being too beautiful to be ruined by trivial questions. And so, two gems, one Steven, and a smiling Pearl sitting on the edge of the Sky Arena gazing at the countless stars. The brightest star though, was sitting next to her, swinging his feet as they watched the night sky, no matter what, she would never let her favorite star burnout or die.
