Round 1 //Quote//
Prompt 1: Quote
Words: 1,827
For a long time the only thing Regulus wanted was for his family to be together and happy. He was stupid for ever thinking that could happen. He thought Sirius would change when he got to Hogwarts but instead it got worse. He went and got himself sorted into Gryffindor of all houses.
His stupid naive dream that he had was crushed in a single moment and when his mother sent the howler the next day when she got the news. He knew it would be too late to ever try and be a normal happy family.
All his parents cared about were having the perfect Black heir for their lord. He knew he would be taking on that role since his brother decided to leave it to him. He knew he shouldn't be bitter about it, but he was.
For two years his best friend came to be Kreacher the House-Elf. He was the only one he could trust fully.
After that he had to go to Hogwarts. Once his sorting took place, he saw his cousin Narcissa giving him a comforting smile from the Slytherin table. Then he looked to the other side and saw Sirius staring at him with no emotion his face. He took a deep breath as he put on the hat that would sort him for the next seven years.
'My what a mind' a voice whispered in his head.
He tried not to flinch but then calmed.
'Your smart, with lots ambition' the hat whispered again, 'you would do well in Ravenclaw' the hat continued and his heart stopped for a minute. He needed to be in Slytherin, he could not break his family more than what it already was.
It was up to him to make his already broken family as whole as it could be. It would be hard but hey 'if it were to be easy, it wouldn't be fun' he remembered the quote he had heard before and it was then he knew what he had to do. He always did love a challenge.
It was the biggest mistake he ever made.
'No please in Slytherin' he begged the hat.
'So alike your brother and you are, you both asked for different houses, enemy houses,' the hat spoke and then he heard it shout.
"SLYTHERIN"
Regulus sneaked a glance towards his brother but he wished he hadn't he was glaring at him, like he was the scum under his feet.
It was at moments like those we wished Kreacher could be at his side.
He tried to not let it get to him that his brother had also betrayed him. He chosen to be in Gryffindor. He didn't know what hurt more but he saw the low smiles on his cousin's face and he knew he had made the right choice. At least they still had each other.
His mother sent him a letter the next saying how proud she was of him. How he was the perfect little son she and his father could have ever asked for.
There were days he wondered why his brother wasn't in Slytherin. He acted enough to be one but the one time he said that to him to he awoke to red Weasley hair, compliments of the Marauders. That day he knew he had lost his blood brother to James Potter. It was that day he became bitter and a true Slytherin.
He closed of his face in a mask, he would see his brother and other Slytherin's throwing insults at each other. He was walking by them one day when he saw his brother look at him and open his mouth, but for the first time ever. He looked over and glared at him.
His brother looked on in shock and then he continued on his way to the library. Where he finally sat at his table in the corner near the restricted section. He studied in peace for a few moments when someone sat in the chair in front of him. He tried to ignore them until they finally spoke.
"Hello," the voice was low and mellow and when he looked up he saw Lily Evans the one girl, who always said no to James Potter. He was surprised someone two years his elder would talk to him, yet before said anything his saw messy hair and black hair flash from the corner of his eyes. Then crazy wild black hair and blonde hair. He knew it was the Marauders and his cousins. He knew that if they caught him with Lily Evans of all people he would be pranked for ever and his cousins would never let him go that he was civil with a Mudblood.
He sighed and got up and left before anyone could see him, knowing that what he did would be considered rude in her eyes, but he continued walking for his own safety.
A few years passed, his brother was now a seventh year and he was a fifth year. His father had officially gotten rid of his brother, he was scorched from the family tree. Along with his cousin for she had married a muggleborn.
In only a summer his family had become more broken than he could ever fix. His mother now wanted him to be a perfect little soldier for Lord Voldemort. He knew he shouldn't have done it but he loved his family more than anything in the world. That summer of his fifth year, he along with other older people went and got initiated with the Dark Mark.
He would look at the tattoo in disdain, he hated it. The only person who brought him any comfort was Kreacher, oh how he loved the House-Elf dearly. He was his best friend
Which brought him to this moment in time.
He was holding his house-elf after Lord Voldemort tortured him, then after he decided his house-elf would be the one for a large task.
He almost shouted no, but he stopped himself before he could.
Since he was his master, he was to come along for this task. What he found out nearly killed him. When he got back to Hogwarts after the event. He found his brother and his friends waiting for him.
"Regulus! How could you!" Sirius shouted.
"Brother-," Regulus tried but this only made Sirius angrier.
"You're no brother of mine! James will always be more of a brother then you will ever be, you disgust me" with those words snarled at him he turned and stalked back into the castle in a rage.
Regulus for the first time in a long time, cried. He cried for the brother he lost, long ago. He cried for the cousin he lost as well. Finally he cried for all the wrong things in his life he was only fifthteen. He still only a child and he had felt and seen more pain than ever before in his life.
He left the grounds. He walked long until he thought he was far away and called for Kreacher.
"Master Regulus," Kreacher spoke.
"Kreacher come here we have a lot of things to get done," Regulus said.
He had a plan, he would change. He would try and change for his brother the first thing he needed was to put a hitch in Voldemort's plans. He had to start with the Horcrux he had just hidden.
He tugged closely the fake locket in his hand and the note he had written inside of it. He had stayed outside while the whole ordeal took place but now inside the dark cave he wondered if this was the right thing to do.
He gulped and nodded.
He was on the boat looking at the water, he knew something was down there what it was he didn't know, but he could feel it.
Yet he made it to the stand on the island in the middle. He looked at the water that he knew would be poison for his body. He knew Voldemort had made his elf drink it and he wouldn't allow that again.
"Master Regulus, please there has to be a easier way," Kreacher pleaded, his big eyes filled with tears.
"Now Kreacher, if this were to be easy, it wouldn't be fun," Regulus told him repeating the words he had told himself for his sorting. How things had changed.
"Let's do this it'll be like when I was younger and you would help me sneak snacks to my room," he tried again giving him a small smile trying to comfort the house-elf and finally Kreacher nodded.
If only life was as easy as it was when he was younger.
With that in his mind he started drinking. He gasped for air, he choked but continued. In the corner of his eyes he saw Inferius coming out of the water. He stood, his knees shaking badly. He ignored it and he got the real locket and placed in the fake one. He was feeling really dizzy, like he was going to faint. He couldn't speak his throat felt like it was on fire.
"Kreacher, please leave and destroy it" Regulus whispered when he collapsed on the floor.
"No master Regulus," Kreacher tried but was cut off.
"I order you Kreacher, please," a cough interrupted Regulus as he handed the locket to the house-elf.
"leave and destroy it," Kreacher with no choice left and only saw as the first inferius attacked his master. He was outside the cave crying. His master was gone, he was only. He left to the shore. No one would know his master died. Only until Lord Voldemort came and checked on his Horcrux and would feel the presence of his magic.
On the shore, he made a little grave. He made the grave in honor of his master. He would put the words that would always comfort him.
'If this were easy, it wouldn't be fun'
If only it was, if it had been. His master wouldn't be dead, and at such a young age. He wasn't even an adult yet!
He cried.
Kreacher would never forgive Sirius for what he said to Regulus, for making him choose this.
Never.
He left with a heavy heart, now bitter and cold. He left the only person who treated him as a human. He left to do the one thing his master ever ordered him to do. He would do it until his last dying breath. No matter what he would destroy the damn locket.
For his master.
Regulus.
A/N I had so many ideas for this prompt. They all came out cheesy and cliche xD Hopefully this acceptable. I know the quote sounds fun and happy, I made it...not that xP but somehow I can imagine Regulus being a lot like Narcissa caring for his family, his brother. Kreacher.
A hard task his family.
I really hope you enjoyed it! :)
