A World Alone
I look out of the car at the setting sun, thinking.
She glances at me. "What are you thinking about?"
I sigh. "Life."
She nods, shifting her eyes back to the road. "Want to talk about it?"
"If you'll listen," I reply.
She smiles. "I will always listen to you."
I smile back. "You're the only one who does. None of our friends are real."
"Tell me about it," she replies.
"Are all people like that?" I ask.
She is silent for a moment. "Not you."
I smile slightly. "Neither are you."
She smiles.
"Sometimes I feel like we're alone. But there's so many people in this world. How can we be alone?" I ask.
"Because in a way, we are." She looks at me. "We're different. People who are different are alone in the world." She looks at the road again.
"We're in this world alone, together," I say.
She smiles. "Exactly." There is a moment of silence.
"They're always talking."
"Who?" she asks.
"People. About us. About things that don't matter. About each other. They always do, they try to be hurtful, and then get away with it."
"It can't be hurtful if we don't let it be," she says, lighting a cigarette.
I smile. "True." I think for a moment. "Let them talk. You're my best friend, and I don't care what the others think. We're in this world alone."
"We're in this together. We are alone together."
"I could say this a million times."
She smiles slightly and nods, to show me that she'll listen.
"You're my best friend." I smile. "We're in this world alone. I don't think I mind too much if I'm in this world alone with you."
She smiles.
"All those people. Their plans, always talking. I'm not like that. We're not like that. We're different. We won't be part of that, we'll be alone. We're in this world alone."
She nods. "Let 'em talk."

Honestly, I don't expect to win. At all. But I had a bit of fun, and this is one of my favorite songs.
This is one of the shortest things I have ever written.
