Log Twelve
The sound of footsteps approched me from behind and a voice whispered,
"Contessa..."
I looked around the room and saw a man standing in the doorway. My face was wet and my eyes stung from all the tears. I stood up and ran to him rubbing at one of my eyes. Forcefully wiping the tears away a loud wail escaped my throat. I saw two arms reach out to me and my arms flung up ready to receive the person in front of me. His face was hazy at first, blocked by my tears, but his voice was calming and so familiar. It was warm and I felt safe.
My mouth opened to speak but I heard nothing come out. The man picked me up and hugged me tight as he stroked my hair. We moved apart and looked at each other. I wiped my eyes as he placed me down and kneeled in front of me.
"Contessa, are you okay now?"
I went to answer him and again my answer was muted.
He patted my head then lifted my face up to his with one finger then smiled.
"Its alright, my little princess, we can fix her. Just no more crying, okay."
I shake my head and hug the man again. Releasing the hug I ran over a table and garb a frail looking doll.
It's hair was neatly combed, lips carefully painted and her blue dress beautifully stitched. An arm hung off it trapped in the dress's sleeve and I carefully brought her over to the man to show him.
The man reached for the doll and suddenly everything faded to white. I saw nothing, but white in every direction except for a few feet in front of me the only visible thing in the whole space, a massive door made of vines.
"Contessa...Contessa..."
Another voice much like the one before, but much older began to call me. I looked around and the door started to fade away. Listening to the new voice I closed my eyes and started to feel myself falling. I wasn't afraid as I fell down and floated in a unknown space. Weird I know, but a sense of calm flowed over me.
I felt a breeze on my cheeks and in my hair. The touch of a hand on my forehead then as I heard the sound of my name being whispered into my ear my eyes snapped opened. Dazed and unsure if I were in reality or another dream I started at the ceiling for a bit then slowly looked over at the hand that held mine. Zori stood over me and pressed my hand gently. A small damp cloth that he placed on my forehead kept me cool and I smiled as we stared at each other quietly.
My eyes began to water as more memories of him rushed back to me. I had no idea why I remembering Zori, but couldn't remember anymore than that. The memory that stood out was about a doll. The doll was a gift from my father; when I was six the arm was broken off by someone. Her name was Doma and I treasured her dearly. He tried so hard to get her fixed. Unfortunately, Doma's arm couldn't be fixed, but instead we had her placed in a glass case to protect her from further damage. We put her in a secret chamber behind one of the pictures that hung in my bedroom. There she'd watch over me safely as I grew stronger. I would open that small space every time I felt scared or lonely when father would go off on trips for work. Once my military training increased I stopped visiting Doma, but I always knew she was there if I ever needed her.
He pulled my hand up to his lips and kissed it. I smiled at him as a sigh of relief escaped him. His head lowered onto my hand and he let out a soft sob.
With my free hand I reached over and stroked his long grey hair.
"I remember something else about you. You really let yourself go, father."
Zori looked up at me with red-watery eyes and whispered,
"Contessa..."
I smiled at him. The memories slowly crept back to me. Still a bit fuzzy on details I was able to piece together the important parts. Like who Zori was and how much he truly treasured his precious daughter, me.
"The episode must have triggered a memory and she has regained some familiarity. Although, I cannot say she has recovered. Still this is a great leap of success in the recovery process." The doctor said.
"So does that mean if she interacts with others she'll regain her memory quicker?" Zori asked.
"It might help, but it seems that when she remembers something the experience is rather painful,"The doctor looked over at me, a soft smile on his lips, "I suggest you take things slow and try not to push yourself."
"I want to start moving around again. Can I start by walking around the room?" I asked.
"Of course, child. If you don't start moving around soon your body will become extremely stiff. As you have suggested for now we can let you walk about the room. Short distances first." The doctor said.
"Great, we have a meal ready for you. Come, we will help you to the table." A servant said.
I looked over at the small table set up for a small banquet. I went to sit up and the doctor touched my shoulder lightly pushing me back down.
"First let me finish with the check up. We must be sure you are able to be out of bed. You seem to suffer a great deal of pain when you are having flashbacks. I would like to check for any signs of side effects from the ordeal. Just a precaution, mind you." The doctor said.
I looked at him and nodded. Laying back I let the doctor look over me. He checked from my fingers to my toes. Lastly he looked back at both of the two servants and asked them for their assistance.
"Alright. I need you to relax Contessa. We are going to do some exercises for the legs. We'll just bend them at the knee, bring them to your chest and stretch them. I understand you want to move around on your own, but we must take things slow. Your body is still trying to readjust to Nami's atmosphere. With time I believe you will be fine. We will of course still have to monitor you to figure out the cause of your headaches when you regain memories." The doctor said.
Each servant grabbed a leg and in turns they began to bend my legs at the knee. They would then guide my knee up to my chest and then release it back down to the bed. They did this a few times and when done I was allowed to sit up.
"As far as I can see you are as healthy as a zumbooger." The doctor said.
"Okay. Umm, what exactly is that?" I said.
"Oh my apologies. A zumbooger is a massive animal that is most commonly saw pulling a wagon of sorts. It is also a form of transportation. You will see them soon as they are everywhere. In any case you shouldn't push yourself and try to relax when you can. I suggest you do the leg stretches before you try to walk. Also keep your movement short for the time being. No more than thirty minutes for now." The doctor replied with a chuckle.
I nodded my head and smiled. With time I would be able to move about and explore this beautiful planet. For now I would just have to make due with walking around this room. I just hoped the doctor could help me figure out why I was having painful flashbacks.
