IX

We were scared.

When the sun blinked out behind the landscape,

And the hush of night fell over us.

We were unnerved by the silence,

And by the sound of the crickets in the deep grass,

From the lacerating dark and from the light of the stars.

The night killed what was alive in us.

But we retaliated.

We came home dragging our feet,

Towards the jagged, broken rocks, we called home.

We lived.

We lived in fear, but we lived.

The ocean spirits can drown our souls,

And the burning sun can cauterize our wounds.

The fiery mob can drive us away,

But dearest, we're home.

We're home when we look into our eyes,

And see the fear glaze off our irises,

And feel the depths of the pulsating pupil,

And spark love into our souls.

We're home, dear.

We'll be afraid and we'll be dead soon.

And the night will mock the featureless graves-

That we'll lie in.

But we'll be together. And we'll hold-

Each other's cheeks in our hands,

Wipe the salt flowing form our eyes.

And dearest,

We will live.

We will live till they don't let us.

They? They, yes.

They are our fears.

We do foster them.

And we do let them tear us apart.
