Chapter 1: The girl in the cage
It was beautiful sunny day in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Throughout the little mushroom village near the castle, everyone was quite antsy, as Professor Elvin Gadd had a new experiment to show the kingdom. Most everyone was excited to see what he had put together. Luigi, on the other hand, was quite nervous about this, as the last several times E-Gadd did something like this, something would go wrong and then he and Mario would have to clean up Gadd's mess. It was annoying to say the least.
"What do you think it's gonna be this time bro?" Luigi asked, a slight pang of fear in his voice
"Who knows? I just hope that it's not gonna cause another huge problem" Mario said in response
'That's exactly what I'm worried about' Luigi thought to himself
When they got to the castle, the brothers were immediately able to spot the princess from across the ocean of toads that crowded the courtyard. They made their way across the sea of citizens and up to Peach, who was waiting for them.
"Hello, boys" she said as she greeted the Mario brothers
"Morning, princess" the brothers said in basic unison
"What do you think Gadd has in store for us today?" Peach asked
"Not sure, Peach. I just hope it doesn't cause too much trouble" Mario said in response
"If it has anything to do with ghosts in any way, I don't want any part in it" Luigi said in a fearful voice
Mario and Peach simply laughed at the remark, knowing that he was somewhat kidding. After a few minutes of talking, the crowd began to hush as Professor Gadd took the stage (A/N:yes, there's a stage in the courtyard). He stood up on a stool and spoke into a microphone.
"Hello and good morning, citizens, and princess, of the Mushroom Kingdom. Today is a day which will give the Mushroom Kingdom even the smallest fighting chance against Bowser's army if he were to once again invade our kingdom. Today, ladies and gentlemen, I give you..."
He paused, pushed a button on a remote control, and a box-like object began to rise out of the stage.
"...Project B.C."
The object had a kind of cloth over it, covering up what it actually was. Gadd removed the drape and that's when it was revealed to be...
...a glass cube.
Under the sheet was some kind of glass cube-shaped prison. Upon closer inspection, one could make out the outlines of a human girl. Luigi just stared in horror as the girl began to slowly crawl into the light. He knew who that was.
Inside the cube was a thin, pale young woman with long white hair. Her left eye was entirely red, unblinking, and rough looking, like a red film was keeping the eye from closing. There were black speckles going up and down the left side of her face. The other eye was a beautiful crystal blue, though it was now dull, as if the life had been beaten out of her. She looked to be starving, as the hospital gown she wore was tight enough for people to see her ribs were getting ready to show. She also had a collar of some kind strapped around her neck. It was as though she was a caged animal to everyone, as the crowd simply stated at her.
She looked around the courtyard and her eyes widened when they landed on Luigi. She put her hands onto the glass and began to pound on the cage she was trapped in, desperately wanting to escape and embrace her only dear friend. Gadd continued his speech.
"As you can see, Project B.C. is a girl who was born with a family curse. The second born daughter of her family will obtain the powers of what I can best describe as a Bacterial contaminate. If any sort of internal DNA were to find its way into the body of another living creature..."
He pushed another button and a door to the cage opened up. A pair of goombas were pushed inside as the door quickly closed.
"...they would have no chance of survival." He finished with a cold grin
Gadd raised the remote and pressed the red button. Almost instantly, the collar around the girl's neck gave her an almost lethal electric shock. She let out an ear piercing scream as the electric pulses filled her body with pain. The audience watched in awe as the girl stood up on Gadd's orders and lunged herself at one of the goombas. She just had to break it's skin with a bite to the mushroom-like head for it's eyes to roll back and for it to go limp. Gadd pushed the button again and the electric shocks from the girl's collar finally stopped. She dropped the goomba on the ground, where it was clearly dead, and whispered to the other:
"Mi dispiace"
That's when the girl broke down into tears. She very, very clearly didn't want to do that, but it wasn't like she had much choice. Luigi noticed what had happened. He had become more furious than he ever had been before, but he stayed still so no one would notice. Gadd turned back to the crowd.
"With power like this, Bowser will lose even his best troops, and thus should stop the constant kidnapping of Princess Peach!"
The crowd cheered at that. Even Mario and Peach began applauding for what Gadd had done to this girl. Luigi, however, couldn't stand to just watch anymore. He wanted to save his friend. He had to save his friend...
She had to save her sister...
"Let her go" Luigi said in a low voice
Gadd took notice of him and turned to address him.
"I'm sorry, son. Can you please repeat that?" He asked
"I said, LET HER GO!" Luigi shouted, his masculine voice mixing in with a much younger, more feminine sounding voice
In that very instance, Luigi let out a horrible, loud, gut twisting scream, his voice still blended with the young girl's voice. This scream was enough for a crater appeared around Luigi's feet. His face was practically invisible due to his head being so low. Almost every piece of glass that wasn't a castle window was shattered, including the cage that this friend of Luigi's was stuck in.
When he realized this, he stopped screaming and rushed over to her, kneeling down to meet her current height. He then spoke in that strange voice.
"Alissa"
She looked up and let out a gasp. This, at the moment, wasn't the Luigi she knew. The thing in front of her may have looked like Luigi, but there was a big key different between them: the eyes. Alissa remembered the bright, innocent blue eyes that Luigi had, but this thing...
It's eyes were nothing but big, hollow, blue-glowing holes that stared down at her, boring into her very soul. This couldn't be Luigi, could it?
"W-Who are you?" She asked, voice stuttering a bit
Luigi's head moved back in surprise. Did she really forget her best friend, her family?
No! She didn't forget him, but rather saw through her. She knew that this wasn't Luigi, at least not completely. He didn't want the others to know, and yet Alissa was able to sense that something was clearly wrong. Luigi stood up. This needed to stop. This had to stop. If it didn't, then someone was going to get hurt.
Hurt...
Hurts...
It hurts! Why does it hurt!!?
What is she doing to him!?
"Ruby..." Luigi whispered softly as his head reached his left eye
'Luigi, we aren't done yet. Why haven't you left with her!?' The girl named Ruby's voice echoed through his head
"Your scaring us. Your hurting me. Please, you have to stop" Luigi said
'... No. Not until my sister remembers. It's what you promised us' She responded flatly
Alissa slowly began to stand as a blue aura began to surround Luigi's body. He remained still, silent, his head down, his right arm at his side and his hand balled up into a fist. He was trembling, almost like he was...
Alissa put a hand on Luigi's shoulder.
"Luigi?" She quietly called to him
No response
'Luigi, she's right there. You know what to do, right?' Ruby asked
"Please... don't make me..." Luigi whispered
"Luigi, are you okay?" Alissa asked fearfully
Luigi finally raised his head. He seemed more... like himself now. His right eye was back to normal, though the other one was still the same big, hollow hole that met Alissa. He had tears running down his face as well as a horrified expression to match it.
He was scared, but of what?
"Alissa..." Luigi whispered
"Luigi, what's happening to you? Who's doing this!?" Alissa asked in desperate fear
"Your.... Your sister." Luigi responded
A group of toad guards suddenly came up from behind and began to separate the two of them. A few of the guards got Alissa back into another cage of some kind while the rest kept a struggling Luigi in place. Mario and Peach tried to calm Luigi down while Professor Gadd quickly pulled out a tiny ray-gun looking device and pointed it at Luigi. He took aim with it and pulled the trigger.
A bolt of red electricity shot out from the device and hit Luigi square in the chest when he turned to face the professor. Luigi let out that same scream from before as he began to become weaker. His head throbbed, his legs shook like jelly, and he soon fell to his hands and knees.
'Luigi?' Ruby called to him
"Ruby, you have to go, now..." Luigi muttered
'But...'
"NOW!" Luigi screamed
In that very second, a shadowy figure seemed to separate from the shadow that Luigi cast onto the ground. The figure looked like a rabbit wearing a dress of some kind. The shadow began to run for the exit.
"Gadd!!" Mario warned
E. Gadd quickly shot the beam at the shadow. It let out an ear-piercing scream as it seemed to writhe in agony. The shadow, however, didn't stop where it was. It soon began to crawl towards the door. As soon as she got close, she seemed to disappear.
E. Gadd quickly turned off the ray gun while Mario and Peach ran over to Luigi. He looked terrified. His breathing was labored slightly, his skin was paler than normal, his eyes, once a beautiful bubbly blue, were now duller than usual and wide with fear. Tears were streaming down his face at a heavy rate. Whoever or whatever that thing was that used his body, it must've done something really bad to scare him this much.
"Weegi?" Mario called to his brother in concern
He didn't respond
"Luigi, are you okay?" Peach asked
No response.
"Sonny, I gotta ask: who or what was that?" Gadd asked firmly, making his way to the group
Luigi cringed at the question and muttered something that was completely inaudible.
"I'm sorry?" Gadd asked
"She wasn't trying to hurt anyone..." Luigi said, slightly louder
This puzzled everyone. If that thing didn't want to hurt anyone, then why did it attack everyone? It made no sense. However, before anyone could ask anything further, Luigi passed out.
Mario sighed. His little brother must've been exhausted after that whole ordeal. That thing might've drained him of his physical energy.
"Looks like we'll have to ask when he wakes up..." Mario said
Luigi was then taken by a pair of toads to the castle infirmary while four others began to push the cage back to E. Gadd's lab. Everyone was, of course, confused by what happened, but they knew one thing for certain:
When Luigi woke up...
...he had a lot of explaining to do.
(Finally done!!! I hope you like it. If you don't get the reference, go read Hero in Green by Capitain_Kit first and you'll know where most of this is gonna come from. Got it? Good. Bai!!! *Disappears*)
