Chapter 10
DeMarcus wasn't where he should be. Technically, there wasn't a law he was breaking and his schedule for the evening was empty. Unlike his wife's schedule, which wasn't a surprise to him as of that morning. But he was befuddled after all the effort he put in for their date. Getting the coordinator of "A Film in the Park" to change the movie wasn't cheap and rearranging his meetings so he could leave early enough to beat the traffic and create the picnic basket was tedious. He thought there would be a better payoff.
Unfortunately, he was wrong. He woke up alone in bed and discovered Aleena's addition to the calendar. Neither one of those things were as bad as last night which was the first indicator that his plan was a failure. She faked it. He could tell her orgasm was bogus because it wasn't like the other times she climaxed—passion didn't cloak her tone nor did her body shudder with exhilaration. It was an insult that she thought she put on an Oscar winning performance when it was barely good enough to be nominated for a MTV Movie Award.
His frustrations only amplified throughout the day. Back to back meetings and last minute changes to the Nakamura and Robinson merger that threatened a seamless close to the merger were just the tip of the iceberg. Tyrese wasn't taking his calls and the one call he received from Aleena was her letting him know she wouldn't be able to attend the Hellene Gala. She told him it was a scheduling issue at the studio but he was certain she was being untruthful. Usually, he believed everything she told him but this week she was different.
DeMarcus' phone vibrated in the cupholder and the screen in the console lit up with a familiar name. He tapped 'accept'.
"Hello." He plainly greeted placing his sight back where it was.
"Where are you?" Nia's voice came through the car speaker.
"Why?" He responded glibly.
"I was ordering—" She paused then asked. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Just busy."
"So you're not coming over."
"No." He responded. "Look, I have to go." He tapped 'end call' before she could speak again.
The view across the street was too intriguing. He was close to getting the answer to a question that had been agonizing him since the beginning of the week. He watched the people exit the establishment in clusters and then trickle out in pairs after one person remained. He wanted to leave his car, go across the street, and get a better look but he knew he couldn't.
So, he took a picture instead and zoomed in to back out the features of the dark haired man who held his wife in an embrace. He gripped the phone tighter as he examined the lack of space between them, her feet hovering slightly above the wood floor as he gripped her waist tightly and the smile lightening up her face as she wrapped her arms around his neck. He tossed the phone in the passenger seat and set his face back on the opened glass double doors.
His ire grew stronger as he watched the man remain to linger as she turned the lights off and led him to the front of the studio while one of her associates stood at the reception counter. The man waved at them both before leaving and his wife beamed a smile that hadn't seen in weeks.
He turned off the car and got out. He needed to know more and since he couldn't get a name from Tyrese he had to do it the old-fashioned way. Talk to him man to man.
