Farewell Neil

It has been a couple of days since Neil passed away and you have thrown yourself into your work to distract you from your grief. You are reading and taking notes on a copy of Pierre's report. You feel bad for ignoring everyone else but you don't want to think about the loss of your mentor. It has affected your work greatly. You fail to notice the fact that Kelsey has entered the study.

"Lilly I brought you something," Kelsey remarks. He is holding a cup of your favourite hot chocolate. At least he knows how to make you feel better even though it won't last long.

"Thank you," You respond as you take it from him. You are glad that he has learnt what you like. It was probably due to the fact that you would have to spend a week and a couple of days with you in the capsule. You know it would be a disaster if you didn't get along with the others.

"Lilly you know you need some downtime," Kelsey brings up the fact that you have been working so hard that you have neglected other things. You take a sip of your hot chocolate. It is some of the best you have ever had.

"And I know you are dealing with some stuff now but you should relax," He is reinforcing his position. Thank goodness he is stubborn.

"Your right," you remark. You have finally given up on being focused on your work. Kelsey moves to give you a hug. It's a little awkward but he manages.

"Kelsey, why are you doing this?" You are confused by his gesture. You are still glad that he is being helpful.

"Um I know this is a bad time but I think I...er um I may have feelings for you," he is a little awkward but that explains a lot between you two. You let out a light-hearted giggle which is good.

"Why don't we go out tonight then," you respond. After two hours of work, both you and Kelsey have found a good restaurant. You are looking at the menu. You can't decide what you want.

"Kelsey, can you decide for me?" You decide to let Kelsey decide for you. He nods as he looks over the menu again. You can tell he has found something. Another five minutes later the food has arrived.

"Can I ask you a question, Lilly?" You can tell Kelsey is worried that he might make matters worse.

"You can ask it but I may not answer," You feel like this date should have a little less questioning in it.

"Was Neil your mentor?" He asks. You are guessing he was meant to ask later. You nod because you feel like you shouldn't talk about it.

"Kels can you be my plus one tomorrow for the funeral?" You ask. You get the feeling that you will need the support. A day later you are at the private service for Neil. It is aboard a navy ship.  You are being supported by Kelsey. You are also thinking about what you are going to say. It is bothering you because you can't think of anything that sounds good. You run through all of the options in your head.

"The next person to say something will be Lilly Collins," the funeral director announces. You walk to the makeshift stage. You are impressed by how many people they invited. You struggle to get your thoughts arranged.

"If it wasn't for Neil and the first step on the moon I wouldn't be where I am today. Neil was in my mind a humble hero. From my first day studying aerospace engineering up until his death, he always encouraged me to follow in my dreams of going to space. I want to take this opportunity to thank Neil for helping me pursue the giant leap for mankind," you are suddenly overcome by a wave of grief. You leave the stage and you are greeted by a hug from Kelsey.

"I'm sorry I didn't know Neil meant that much to you," Kelsey whispers to you. It is a good thing that he is supportive.

"Yea," You respond as you wipe away the tears that have started rolling down your face.

"Let me," Kelsey gently cleans them away for you. It is a comforting gesture. Ten minutes later everyone has moved to the outside upper viewing deck. You, Michael and Buzz all have some of Neil's ashes in your hands. You let the ashes fall lazily into the sea. Another five minutes and the precision has finished. You are looking for your dad. There is just one problem, the crowd is too big for the space on the deck.

"There you are Lilly," He calls out to you. You quickly catch up to him.

"Dad I was looking for you," You respond. He looks you up and down.

"I have something I want you to take with you on Constellation five," He says as he holds out a small ziplock back. It contains some of Neil's ashes. You look at the packet.

"I will have to talk to Danny but I will see what I can do," You respond.

"And how are you holding up?" he asks as Kelsey approaches you two.

"Well dad it's hard," You reply. You latch on to Kelsey's arm. Your dad is a little confused but you can tell he has decided to ignore his confusion. An hour later you are at home. You are reflecting on today's events and the possibility of it affecting your performance during the constellation mission. You are also reading some more reports. You are interrupted by a knock on the door. Your dad gets it.

"Lilly it's Danny. You should talk to him in the kitchen," Your dad decides to get you out of the study. Thirty seconds later you have made it to the kitchen to see Danny holding a bunch of flowers.

"The team decided that you should be given these," He responds.

"Thank you, Danny, and sorry I haven't really been at the HQ much," You quickly find a makeshift vase and fill it with water. You take the flowers and place them in. Another nice gesture.

"Don't worry about the simulations just yet," He responds. You are glad that he is an understanding man.

"Thank you, Danny," you thank him again because you don't have much to say.
