An accident (Ivan)
You are getting some stuff ready for the day's chores. There is something bothering you about the pipeline construction. Hopefully your bother doesn't amount to anything. Roman would probably tell you if there is anything wrong. You are joined by the Mahia Tech doctor.
"What can I do for you Marcus?" You ask.
"I was wondering if I could help you prepare anything," Marcus responds. It's nice of him to offer but you can't think of anything. Your thoughts are soon interrupted. Jay brings one of the SpaceX engineers. You get to work on making sure he is stable. At least it's not Roman
"Marcus, can you make sure the diagnostic scanners are ready?" You call out. He nods as you double check the engineer's vitals. At least he has a pulse. You hear a pained moan. Another good sign. You are still going to have to operate.
"Will you need anymore help Ivan?" Jay asks.
"No thank you," You respond. You, Marcus and the rest of the team should have it under control. Five minutes later you are ready to operate. You are impressed at the readiness of your staff.
"Name?" You kick start the process of operating.
"Jack Markham," The others parrot.
"We are repairing any damage caused by a crush injury correct?"
"Correct," They respond. You get to work on fixing the damage. After two tense hours of operation you have finally finished. You are getting something to eat. You are joined by Roman who is being oddly quiet. He is probably bothered by the accident.
"Roman are you alright?" You decide to ask. Hopefully he doesn't mind you asking.
"It's just those fools who think they can waltz in here and make the place unsafe," Roman starts one odf his many rants about the Mahia crew. It seems that he is going to complain about the fact that the guys and Mahia technologies should have waited longer. The good thing is the rest of the Mahia team has made it to their base.
"I mean don't get me wrong they are nice people just terrible builders," Roman releases the mother of all sighs. Normally your standard response would be to reassure him but you can't think of anything you want to say that would help. You start nibbling on some of the food. You start to think about the events of the morning. You make a list of things that you have to do before tomorrow. It is an overwhelmingly long list luckily you don't have long to think about it because you are joined by Jay.
"Do you mind if I sit here?" He asks.
"Go for it Jay," Roman answers for you.
"Ivan, I know it's too soon to know but how will Jack do with recovery?"
"He should be fine with enough rehab but I don't want to talk about it yet," You reply. Hopefully he understands your position. Jay gives you an understanding nod.
"Sorry I had to check," Jay responds. You soon finish your food and you are in your office doing some paperwork. The fact that you can't do much as an engineer bothers you but you prefer working with humans not machines. You start to think about how your life would be different if you hadn't become a flight surgeon. It would definitely be boring. The thought puts a smile on your face. Your thoughts are soon interrupted again this time it's Lilly.
"What can I do for you Lilly?" You ask as you bring your eyes up from your paperwork.
"I was wondering if you could tell me roughly how long Jack's rehab will take," Lilly asks. At least you know why she is asking. However you get the feeling that she has something else to ask you.
"Three to six months. I'm not quite sure," You respond.
"But that's not why you are here," Hopefully Lilly doesn't mind the fact that you want to probe. She reluctantly nods.
"How did you guess?" Lilly is surprised at the fact you were able to tell that she is here for another reason.
"Normally I'm the one that comes to talk to you. Anyway you should tell me what is bothering you," You reply. You get down to business. You can tell that she has to think about the answer.
"I'm normally optimistic about sharing but the accident has put some serious doubt in my mind," Lilly finally speaks up. The good thing is you have had this conversation with Roman before and because of it you know exactly what to say.
"Look Lilly I have had this conversation with Roman many times so I will tell you the same thing I tell him. There is nothing we can do so we should let the situation play out," Hopefully the statement gives Lilly a boost in confidence. It seems to work.
"And talk to Kelsey about it as well,"
"Thank you for listening," Lilly responds. You can tell just by the way that she is speaking you have said the right things.
"Don't worry. It's part of my job to be a good listener," You remark. It's one of the first things you learn as a Roscosmos medical doctor. Lilly leaves and the fact that you were able to help puts a smile on your face. It has been a couple of days since the accident and you are helping Jack with his rehab. You have gotten him to hold out his arm. You can tell that he is on the verge of giving up.
"I'm sorry Ivan but I can't," He complains as he carefully lowers his arm.
"It's ok. At least you did better than last time," You try your best to be cheerful but it doesn't work. So you decide to go with the bully approach. Hopefully Jack doesn't take any of this personally. You proceed with the insults. At first Jack is a little shocked but he soon changes his mind about giving up. He sighs as he carefully brings his arm up. You start timing. You can see a slight wobble in his arm so you gesture for him to rest.
"Ivan?" Jack decides he has something to say.
"Yes?" You are a little worried that he is going to tell you off for insulting him.
"Thank you for getting me to change my mind," Jack remarks.
"I'm glad I could help," You reply. You are a little taken aback by the fact that he is thanking you. It makes your job easier when the patient appreciates your work.
"I'm going to get some food so let me know if you need anything," You say as you get up and leave. Your eyes flick through the snack options. They settle on an orange. You take one and you find a seat next to Lilly, Kelsey and Roman.
"Do you mind if I join you?" You ask even though you know the answer.
"Go for it," Kelsey responds. You sit down and you get to work on freeing the orange from the skin. It doesn't take you long.
"Ivan you seem a little happier," Lilly remarks. You haven't noticed the change in your emotional state but it would make sense because Jack thanked you.
"Yeah Jack thanked me for helping him and patients saying thank you always makes me happy," You respond as you place a slice of orange into your mouth. You are hit by the sweetness of the flavour. At least your day is going the way it's supposed to. Hopefully your afternoon will be spared as well.
