Chapter Eleven

I woke up with a start and jolted out of bed into a sitting position, looking to see if it was all just a dream, but Uchiha Sasuke was in my chair reading a book on… odd, I think that’s a children’s book about a llama that ran to the wild. His hair was slightly in his face, but that didn’t block me from seeing the outline of his cheekbone and flawless pale skin. His skin glowed, just like mom’s and mine did, maybe more.

Sasuke looked up to me with his onyx eyes and smirked.

“You’re awake? It’s only three in the morning.” I nodded at him and slowly got out of my bundle of blankets, thinking about what I should do. I have to teach him the ways of the vampire, and I have to teach him how to feed, and how to do many other things.

“I’m going to teach you some things about your new life, and I need to be awake early to teach you and show you, cause my mom is usually laying with my dad around now.” I explained and stood up. I went to a little box that was by the stacks of library books and took out a few sheets of printer paper and a pencil.

I turned on my nightlight that was brighter than the one Sasuke had on and took one of the books as a hard surface to write on and sat down next to Sasuke, who had moved to sit against my bed.

“I saw that you didn’t leave.” I pointed out with a smug smile. He glared for a moment before smirking.

“What would be the point in leaving, Maualei would just bring me back to you. That woman, she loves you. No, she’s more like obsessed with you, and I can’t figure out why. You’re just a normal fifteen year old human that can do ninja jumps.” He ranted and I grinned.

“I guess that will be where I will start. I will tell you a little about my small life. It’s smaller than you really think.” I started and got into a comfortable position before telling him my life story.

“I was born the December Eleventh of last year. I’m not even Two months old, well; I will be two months old tomorrow. I will seem fifteen tomorrow. I am half vampire and half human, a- what Maualei would consider- a half-breed. I was tested on by the Hokage and several of the special doctors that have been sworn to secrecy of not telling of me being not a full human. I was the main lab rat of the hospital for a whole month. Finally I couldn’t take it anymore and refused to be tested again. Of course, if something ever goes wrong with me, I must go there, but at least I have the freedom of even being away from the hospital for more than twelve hours at a time.

“I developed faster than any human- or vampire, and now I have the highest I.Q. in the village and am the strongest and fastest. I’m not as talented as my mother, but I am the family’s prodigy. I study everything I can, I crave knowledge.

“Now, the vampire side of me lets me have inhuman speed, strength, and I can heal with my saliva. I don’t need very much sleep and I don’t need food. The human side of me allows me to not drink blood, it allows me to have a heartbeat, and it lets me be able to eat food instead of regurgitate it. My blood is mixed with my human side of blood, so that is my guess on how you enjoyed my blood.” I paused to take a short breath. He seemed to take in the information fine, so I just continued onto the teaching him part.

“I want you to make your fangs come out of your gums, make them as long as you can.” He looked at me in shock that I’d ask that, but I just urged him to go on. He sighed and started to focus on making his fangs come out. Soon enough they were out and I took a note on about how long they were; 1.5 inches.

“Now” I instructed, “Make them go back in only a little bit, not all the way.” He seemed to have difficulty doing this at first so I sighed. “It’s like chakra control- you’ve learned that, right?” he nodded. “Just focus on your teeth but don’t let chakra come out, or it won’t work.” He nodded again, more and determined and confident.

I checked the time and saw that I only had an hour before sunrise. Mom will get suspicious and check on me if I’m not up by then. I sighed and got up and put back the paper, pencil, and book. Sasuke looked at me questioningly.

“I have school today; you have to be hidden until I get back.” I said and got out my usual ninja outfit. I noticed that there was a small rip in my black shirt and frowned. I’d get Deidara to sew that later.

“Where should I go?” he asked and I looked around. My closet seemed like the best place for him at the moment instead of under the bed; he’d have more room to move around. I went into my closet and quickly cleared a space for him and threw my shoes under my bed. I pulled the chair Sasuke sat in in there and a light that only took batteries. I put books in there and pointed.

“That’s your new bedroom; I’ll bring up a bottle of blood for you.” He nodded and sat in the chair. I smiled in approval and shut the door. I got changed as fast as I possibly could and jogged downstairs to greet mom, who was sipping on a bottle of blood.

“Hey darling, find anything about your blood?” she asked and I nodded.

“It has a human blood taste to it.” She froze and looked down on me.

“H-how do you know what human blood tastes like? This is all animal blood!” she yelled and I cringed. ‘Crap, what’ll I do?’

“Well… I’m not actually sure what human blood tastes like, it was just better than animal blood.” I lied. I knew exactly what human blood tasted like, or at least Shikamaru’s, and that was a taste I would never forget. Mom seemed to let out a relieved breath. “I’m really thirsty; can I have a whole bottle?” I asked and she seemed to think about it. Truth was, I wasn’t thirsty at all; I just wanted some candy. I’ve turned into quite the liar, but it was to protect my family and the rest of Konoha.

“I guess you can, but if you feel full, don’t continue drinking. It causes a belly ache.” She agreed and I took a whole bottle of blood from the fridge.

“I’m going to drink it upstairs; I wanted to read some more of my book. I promise to bring down the empty bottle before I leave.” She nodded and went into the living room, but not without calling out,

“Don’t stain the carpet!”

I silently laughed and made my way back upstairs before breaking into a full on run into my room and locking the door.

“It’s just me.” I whispered and Sasuke opened the closet door. “I want a little drink first though.” I said and he frowned, obviously mad he has to share the bottle. I took a small sip and I felt my energy come back to me. I handed the rest to the bottle to Sasuke and he surprisingly drank only half. He saw the look on my face and smirked.

“I can control myself, and besides, I’ll need some for later… won’t I?” I nodded and saw that he put the bottle of blood by my books.

“Make sure the bottle is sealed, the blood would go bad if it isn’t.” I informed and he checked if the seal was tight, and it wasn’t. I was glad that I got him to check, because that would’ve complicated things if I had to deal with bad blood. I took the empty bottle from last night and said goodbye to Sasuke.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can, I have to see Maualei after school, but I’ll make the visit short.” He groaned but nodded. “I’ll also get some better books for you.” He seemed to feel a little bit better. I waved to him and closed the door as sunlight started to come into my room.

I went into the kitchen again and sat the empty bottle in the sink. Sasori sat at the kitchen reading the newspaper and my mom was nowhere to be seen.

“Sasori? Can you take me to the library after I go to Maualei’s?” I asked and he raised an eyebrow at me.

“Since when do you go see Maualei willingly?” he asked but nodded nonetheless. “Yeah I’ll pick you up from Maualei’s and take you. But didn’t you just get books?” I grinned.

“I want some fiction books to read for entertainment.” More like so Sasuke didn’t have to read that stupid llama book over and over again. Just the thought made me kind of smile.

“Well, okay I guess.” I thanked him and made my way outside only to find Shikamaru waiting for me.

“Shika? What are you doing here?” I asked and he looked up to meet my gaze with his usual lazy expression.

“I thought I could walk you to the Academy, is that alright?” I nodded and glanced into my window to see Sasuke looking at us with an indescribable expression. A look of horror flashed through my eyes and I opened my mouth.

Shikamaru noticed my crazed expression and looked up at the window too, but before he saw Sasuke I football tackled him and covered his eyes. He landed with a moan and I looked back to the window; Sasuke was gone but the curtains were swaying. So he could be in the light.

“What’s gotten into you?” Shikamaru asked and I uncovered his eyes. I felt the need to lie again and I scrolled through my countless excuses in my head for an okay one.

“Uh… I…” I stuttered and shook my head. I couldn’t lie to the boy that I tell everything to, I just couldn’t. But I had to in order to protect him. “I just can’t stay away from you?” I said uncertain and he smiled the biggest grin I’ve ever seen; it was bigger than the smiles I’ve seen from Naruto even!

When I realized what the hole I might have just dug myself was, I cursed inside my head. Shikamaru must think I like him… more than friends like. And I didn’t like him like that… don’t I?
