Chapter 3: The Demons Among The Slayers
After finally reaching the destination by taking various routes to conceal the location of the base, you found yourself waiting outside a door as Lynn stood next to you. After a few more minutes, the door slid open and Shinobu appeared as Lynn gulped down a breath of air while you had an unfazed look.
"Come in, the master will be here shortly." Shinobu said as Lynn stepped through the door nervously and you followed her in.
Just as you had entered however, the scent of an incoming attack filled the air as you reached for your Tokijin and blocked an oncoming attack from a dual-blade wielder.
"What the hell is this? What did you bring back with you, Shinobu!?" The attack said as you glared at him.
"Know your place, vermin." You said as you slashed your blade and sent the attacker away.
As you stared at the person who dared to attack you, you were able to get a better look at what the vermin looked like. He was a tall, wide-set man of a bulky, muscular build with lightly-tanned skin. His hair was white and of uneven length, the longest strands reaching his shoulders, and was styled with three more notable, shorter clumps arching up to fall as bangs between his eyes and on either side of his face. He had quite thin, maroon eyes that appeared to slant inwards, each with one long eyelash flowing to the far side of his face. Looking at his blades you saw that they were two larger-than-normal blades, which each had a notch in the sharp ends of their blades, connected together at the hilt by a metal chain.
"Uzui-san, I ask that you stop there." Shinobu said as the Dual-Wielding Hashira showed no signs of stopping.
"Were you brainwashed or something? That's a demon! What's even more dangerous is that it's out in broad daylight! A demon like that can't be allowed to live." Uzui said as he pointed his blades towards you.
"I see..." You said as Lynn turned towards you with a worried look. "You appear to be the type of vermin who was born ignorant. Living your life ignorantly cutting down these weak pieces of trash you call demons." You said as a dark and malevolent aura seemed to pour off of your blade as everyone had a nervous look appear on their faces. "You may as well die ignorant." You said as your blade began to surge with a strange power the humans had never seen before.
"Don't do it!" Lynn suddenly threw herself in front of you as you stared down at her.
"Hey! Move!" Uzui yelled as he went to charge in, but Shinobu's blade suddenly stopped just short of his throat.
"This demon is definitely dangerous, but its something that's not under the control of 'him', so if we can persuade him to our side, then maybe the tides of battle can shift in our favor." She tried to explain before hearing your demeaning voice.
"Don't be ignorant." You said as Lynn turned her head back to you. "I do not intend on working with the lowly likes of you pathetic demon hunters." You said as Lynn turned toward you with a pleading look.
"Please, Lord Y/N! I know you would never work with them, but please at least hear them out. They could have information that may point you in the right direction of things. Please, I beg of you, my lord!" She bowed her head to you as you stared down at her.
There was a slight breeze as the tension amongst you all was so serious, you could hear a sweat drop hit the rocks in the garden. Lynn raised her head with a pleading look and as you stared at her, the face of Rin appeared in her place as you were mentally taken a back, but maintained your seldom look. After a few more moments, the aura that appeared around your sword suddenly dissipated and you sheathed your blade as Lynn seemed relieved that she was able to make a persuasion from you at least.
"This girl has just spared your lives from my blade. Be thankful that she was around." You said as you turned and walked pass Lynn and the other slayers.
"Thank you, my lord!" Lynn said as she ran over to follow you through the garden.
As you walked through the garden, you noticed the estranged and shocked looks on the faces of the people and slayers in the place you were. While looking around at the garden and ignoring the stench of the humans that filled the place, you found a tree that seemed acceptable enough to rest under. Just before you took another step however, you looked up to find the wretched stench that filled your nose.
"A human that smells even worse than those pathetic vermin of demons out there, I guess there are still somethings that can go beyond one's expectations." You said as Lynn looked up at the tree you were staring at and saw someone perched on a branch like they were ready to strike, with a distinct rattling noise coming from the same spot.
"Who is that?" Lynn wondered as she stared at the strange person perched in the tree.
In the tree was a young man of short stature and a pale complexion. He had straight-edged black hair of varying lengths, the longest reaching down to his shoulders and the shortest stopping at his cheekbones, which he wears down with two shorter strands hanging between his eyes. He wore a navy blue version of the standard uniform, along with a black and white pinstriped haori, the hem and cuffs of which were striped lengthways rather than vertically, which covered his hands. He also sported bandages in place of the leg-wraps around his calves, as well as another set of bandages that covered his mouth, and white with blue-strapped on his feet. He also had a white snake, loyally wrapped around his shoulders and in a defensive stance like him as well. This was Iguro Obanai, the Serpent Hashira.
"I don't believe it, a demon that can walk under the sun? Don't screw around, what are the others doing?" The strange young man spat with confusion and anger as he stared at you while his blade was out and pointed towards you.
"Another Hashira?" Lynn wondered before gulping down a breath and speaking up. "U-Um, excuse me...! Hashira-san! Please don't be alarmed! He means no harm to us!" Lynn called to the Hashira in the tree.
"What kind of fool do you dare take me for? Why would you bring a demon not only to the home of the master, but one that can stand in broad day light? Are you some kind of demon as well, girl?" Obanai spoke in a fierce tone.
"What a disgusting creature. Shall I end him of his misery of living?" You said while forming your hand into a claw shape as your knuckles cracked and she immediately stepped in front of you with her arms up.
"No! I'm begging you, my lord, just give them a moment of your time. Maybe you can get some helpful information. PLEASE, just hold off on the killing." Lynn begged you as you merely relaxed your hand and remained silent. "Thank you." Lynn sighed in relief as stood off to the side to wait for whatever reason you were there for.
After waiting some time and being oblivious to the hateful and cautious looks from the gathering Hashira's in the garden, Lynn watched as two members of the Kakushi brought Tanjirou in who was restrained by a rope binding his hands behind him. He was just dressed in the Demon Slayer Corps uniform as his haori was removed when he was being treated at the time. As he was knelt on the ground that was laid out with individual stones, Shinobu turned her attention towards him first.
"Before we get to the bigger things here, let's start with a more minor issue..." Shinobu asked as she approached Tanjirou. "I'm interested in hearing first this boy's story. The reason he's going on missions with a demon in tow despite being a Demon Slayer...I'd like to hear the explanation from the boy himself. Needless to say, what he's done is against the Demon Slayer Corps rules." Shinobu said in a calm fashion as Tanjirou grew a worried look. "You are aware of that, aren't you? Kamada Tanjirou...Why are you traveling with a demon when you're a Demon Slayer?" Shinobu asked as the sound of Uzui grabbing his chained blades behind his back became audible.
"No need to ask." Uzui said while looking down at Tanjirou.
"You can take your time. Just tell us why." Shinobu said as the young boy had a hard time answering.
"She's my...She's my younger--!" Tanjirou cut himself off when he went into a fit of coughs due to dry mouth and dehydration.
"I do believe you need some water." Shinobu knelt down with a gourd in hand as he stared at it for a few seconds before pouting his teeth and lips around it, being able to drink with her help. "You've injured your jaw, so please drink slowly. It contains a painkiller, so it will make you feel better." She said as Tanjirou released himself from the gourd and breathed heavily before calming down. "It's not as if your wounds are healed, so you mustn't push yourself. Now then, Kamado Tanjirou..." She asked for his answer once more.
"That demon is my younger sister! While I was away, my family was attacked by a demon, and when I got home, they were all dead!" Tanjirou said as Lynn's eyes widened at his story. "My sister got turned into a demon, but she's never devoured anyone! She never has...and never will! She'll never hurt humans no matter what!" He tried to assure them of Nezuko's safety.
"While he was...a demon killed..." Lynn's thoughts trailed off as she remembered the sight of her dead parents and little brother, laid in her home. "Just like..." She muttered as you opened you glanced down at her before looking over at the boy.
"That time I was on the mountain..." You thought as you remembered coming across a slaughtered family, and a barely live young girl who had mixed blood of a demon running through her. "...So that was his family?" You thought as Iguro pointed his finger condescendingly at him.
"Spare us your absurd ravings. If she's family, no wonder you're defending her. I can't trust a single word you're saying. I for one, don't believe you." Iguro denied Tanjirou's claims outright.
"She's been possessed by a demon. Let us kill this poor child immediately so that she can be liberated!" The Stone Hashira, Himejima Kyoumei, said while tears flowed down his face and his palms were pressed together with beads running through his hands.
"Listen to me please! I became a swordsman so that Nezuko could be cured! It's been two years since Nezuko became a demon! And in all that time, she hasn't devoured one human!" Tanjirou tried to explain once more, but Uzui didn't budge on his judgement.
"Your story's spinning in the most drab way possible, idiot. The fact that she hasn't eaten anyone, that she won't from now on. Don't just give us lip service. Prove it to us with max flamboyance." Uzui demanded as the Love Hashira, Kanroji Mitsuri, chimed nervously.
"Excuse me? I do have my doubts, you know. I just can't imagine the Master being in the dark about this situation." MItsuri said as Rengoku and Uzui looked down at her while she stood between the two men. "Do you really think it's okay to deal with him without his permission?" She asked as the two men turned back towards Tanjirou. "Shouldn't we at least wait until he arrives?" She suggested as Tanjirou spoke once more to defend his case.
"My sister...My sister will fight with me by my side! She can fight as a Demon Slayer to protect humans! So please...!" He wanted to beg them, but someone knew walked around the corner of the garden, and a pungent smell that annoyed you caught your attention.
"Well, well, I see you have some fun brewing here." You turned your head to the right and saw a man covered in scars, the Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa, standing a few feet away holding the box containing Nezuko. "Is that the moron Slayer who has a demon with him?" He asked with a wicked smile as Tanjirou gasped in shock when he saw the Hashira had Nezuko in his hand. "What the hell are you trying to pull here?" He asked as Mitsuri was taken aback and blushed from the sight of him.
"Shinazugawa! You've gained even more scars! How gorgeous you look!" She blushed and had an excited look on her face from staring at his scars.
"That roach...his body is scented in his own disgusting blood from his scars, how putrid." You said in disgust as Lynn looked nervous at what the Wind Hashira was about to do.
"This won't do, Master Shinazugawa! Please, would you mind putting down that box?" A female Kakushi ran around the corner to try and stop Sanemi, meanwhile Shinobu stood up and Kanroji took notice.
"Shinobu looks pretty angry! Now, that's unusual! She's so cool!" Mitsuri held her hand to her mouth while excitingly looking at Shinobu.
"Shinazugawa, please don't act out of line." Shinobu said in a calm tone while turning towards him, but he paid her no mind.
"What did you say that demon, kid? That she can fight as a Demon Slayer to protect humans? You know what we call that?" Sanemi spoke sinisterly as he gripped the hilt of his blade. "A total delusion, you moron!" He taunted him as he pulled his sword out and stabbed it completely through the box, piercing Nezuko's shoulder as she groaned in pain.
"Oh no!" Lynn gasped as Tanjirou broke away from his handler and stood against Sanemi.
"Anyone who hurts my sister...Hashira or not, I won't let you get away with it!" Tanjirou yelled in anger as Sanemi just laughed while sinking it deeper through the box before pulling it back out, blood spewing from his blade and the box.
"Is that right? Good for you." Sanemi laughed while spinning his blade around to rid it of blood, and Tanjirou yelled as he was about to charge at Sanemi.
"Stop it! The master will be arriving soon!" Tomioka intervened to try and stop them, but Sanemi was shocked when he noticed the boy wasn't stopping.
Sanemi tried to slash at Tanjirou, but the young slayer jumped over the attack and to everyone's surprise, he managed to headbutt Sanemi right on the head. The two of them collapsed to the ground and struggled to get up as the rest of you watched, and Mitsuri barely held back a laugh in her hands while shaking from the humor. However, this was noticed by the men around her as she hid her face.
"Pardon me." Mitsuri apologized as Tanjirou got back up and stood in a protective manner in front of Nezuko's box.
"Damn you!" Sanemi groaned as he still struggled to get to his feet.
"If you can't tell the difference between good demons and bad, you should just quit being a Hashira!" Tanjirou scolded Sanemi as he rose from the ground with a bloodied nose.
"You little..." Sanemi groaned as he grabbed his bllade and stood up in front of Tanjirou. "I'll destroy you!" He said as he pointed the blade at the young boy, but before he could do anything...
"The master...has arrived." A pair of small voices spoke out for everyone to hear as you all turned to the open air Tatami room and saw two small girls in kimono's standing in front of a door, as a man slowly appeared from the shadows.
"So good of you to come." The man, who you assumed was the Master of the Corps, said as he came out in full vision. "My beloved children..." He said as Lynn walked forward to stand with the other slayers.
The Master light skin and black shoulder length hair. He had a strange marking that made his skin look as if it was rotting spreading down his face and covering his eyes making him unable to see. He wore a black kimono with a long white haori with a pink and purple mist like pattern that starts around the lower back. The Master raised his hands and waited while the two young girls, who you presumed were his daughters, slid the door closed behind him before taking his hands and aiding him in walking closer to the edge of the floor, towards the garden. He stopped when he felt the warmth of the sun hit his face and smiled while basking in its warmth.
"Good morning, everyone. The weather is amazingly good today. I wonder if the sky is blue. It pleases me that we've made it to our semiannual Hashira Meeting with no personnel changes." The man finished as just in that moment, all the slayers bowed their heads, Sanemi forcing Tanjiirou's head to the stone covered ground, while Shinobu merely put her hand on Lynn's shoulder, suggesting she bow as well.
You watched as the faces of the slayers all changed and the expressions they had now were ones of utmost respect and dignity. After a few moments, Sanemi raised his head a little and spoke up.
"I am pleased to see you in good health, as well, Master. I fervently pray for your continued good fortune." Sanemi spoke with a much higher sense of intelligence.
"Thank you, Sanemi." The Master thanked his child of wind.
"If I may, Master...Before we start the Hashira Meeting, would you mind enlightening us about this swordsman, Kamado Tanjirou, accompanied by a demon? And there is also a bigger issue that we must bring forth to you, as Shinobu and Tomioka have encountered an anomaly and have endangered the lives of you and your family, as well as the slayers here, by returning with this dangerous demon." Sanemi said in regards to you and Tanjirou's case.
"Right. I apologize for startling you all. About Tanjirou and Nezuko...I've sanctioned their situation. And I'd also like you all to accept it." The Master spoke as they all had surprised looks on their faces.
"Even if it's what you desire, Master, I cannot agree to it." Himejima disagreed with tears as he clasped his palms together once more.
"I'm flamboyantly opposed, as well! A Demon Slayer travelling with a demon is unacceptable!" Uzui said while pointing his thumb at himself while trying to stand out.
"I shall do whatever it is you wish, Master!" Mitsuri said with excitement and cheer.
"I'm fine either way...since I'm going to forget anyway." The Mist Hashira, Tokito Muichirou, said with uninterest.
"I won't trust them. I won't trust them. In the first place, I loathe demons." Obanai said with spite.
"Although I respect you will all my heart, that's an incomprehensible notion, Master! I oppose it with everything I've got!" Rengoku spoke in a loud tone with a smile on his face.
"The Demon Slayer Corps' mission is to annihilate demons. I request that you penalize both Kamado and Tomioka!" Sanemi said in frustration as a few moments of silence passed before the Master spoke.
"The letter." Was all he said as his daughter on the right pulled out a letter to read aloud to the slayers.
"Yes." She replied as she unfolded the paper she pulled from her kimono. "This is a letter received from a former Hashira, Urokodaki Sakonji. I shall read you an abridged version." The Master's daughter announced before looking down at the letter. "Please allow Tanjirou to be accompanied by his sister, a demon. Because of her resilient mental strength, Nezuko has no lost her human emotions. Even in a starved state, she never devoured humans, and this has held true more than two years later. Although the situation seems somewhat far-fetched, it is an indisputable fact. In the event that Nezuko does assault a human, Kamado Tanjirou, as well as...Urokodaki Sakonji and Tomioka Giyu will atone by committed seppuku." The girl read as Tanjirou looked over in shock of hearing the support and commitment coming from Tomioka as grateful tears fell from his eyes.
"So, what if they commit seppuku?" Sanemi said as Lynn looked over at him nervously that he would do something. "If you want to die, then rot to death for all I care! It's no guarantee! Not by a long shot!" Sanemi argued once again.
"Shinazugawa is right! If she kills and devours a human, there's no coming back from that! It won't bring back the people who were killed!" Rengoku agreed whole heartedly.
"You do have a point." The Master acknowledged the arguments they gave him.
"In that case..." Sanemi was hopeful in the Master's reconsideration.
"Master!" Rengoku also pressed for the reconsideration.
"We can't guarantee that she won't attack humans. We can't prove it. That said...We also can't prove that she will attack humans." The Master countered the argument as Sanemi grew shocked at how persistent he was being about the matter. "The fact that Nezuko has refrained from devouring humans for more than two years, and also that there are three people risking their lives for her. To reject this notion, those who reject it must offer an even more convincing argument." The Master laid almost all their arguments to rest as this didn't sit well for Sanemi. "Do you all have the will to do so?" He asked as they found it hard to answer back. "Also, there's something I'd like to relay to you, my children. Tanjirou here has met Kibutsuji." The Master said as you perked up at this claim and the Hashira were all shocked.
"Kibutsuji? Who is that?" Lynn wondered in confusion.
"That vermin..." You thought as you furrowed your brows.
"No, impossible! Even when no Hashira has ever crossed paths with him?" Uzui said in shock as they all turned towards him, Uzui accidentally knocking Mitsuri over as she yelped. "You mean this kid...What did he look like? What about his powers? Where did this take place?" Uzui asked with desperation.
"Did you battle him?" Muichirou asked in a calm tone.
"What was Kibutsuji doing? Did you find his stronghold? Hey, answer me!" sanemi asked while shaking Tanjirou's head, making the boy dizzy.
"Shut up! I asked him first! First, tell us what powers Kibutsuji has!" Uzui demanded from Tanjirou, but they all fell silent when the Master gestured them to quiet down.
"Kibutsuji has sent pursuers after Tanjirou. Though his purpose may simply be to silence him, now that Kibutsuji's given himself away for the first time, I don't want to let go. I also believe something's happening to Nezuko that Kibutsuji never saw coming. Can you try to understand?" The Master said as all the pieces were coming together, but Sanemi didn't like it.
"No, I can't understand, Master. If it were human, I'd be okay with letting it live, but not a demon! Not after all that we the Demon Slayers have gone through in battle! Not after so many people have lost their lives! It's unacceptable!" Sanemi said as all the attention was on him as he brought out his blade and cut his left arm.
"Eh? Eh!? What are you doing? What are you doing? You're soiling the garden!" Mitsuri thought as she watched blood drip to the stones below as he raised his bloody arm up.
"Master! I will prove it to you myself! The sheer ugliness of a demon!" Sanemi declared.
"Sanemi..." The Master spoke in an upset tone of how his child was acting out.
Sanemi took the box containing Nezuko and placed one foot on top of it as he let his blood trickle through the hole.
"Hey, demon! It's time to eat! Sink your teeth in this!" Sanemi smiled while letting his blood entice Nezuko, while Tanjirou glared at him with rage as scratches and groans came from the box. "No need to force yourself to hold back. Just show us your true colors, and I'll obliterate you right here!" He egged Nezuko on.
"Nezuko!" Tanjirou yelled her name to try and keep her calm as Lynn clenched her hands closed around the cloth of her pants.
"Stop it..." She thought of how cruel the Wind Hashira was being.
"Shinazugawa, it's no good doing it in the sunlight. We have to go into the shadows, or the demon won't show its face." Obanai suggested to Sanemi, wanting to see the outcome.
"Master, please forgive this discourtesy." Sanemi apologized as he leaped from where he stood and jumped into the shade of the open room behind the Master, away from the sun as he threw the box harshly on the Tatami floor, then stabbing the box and girl once again.
"Stop it!" Tanjirou yelled in rage, but gasped as Obanai brought down his elbow on Tanjirou's back, keeping him down.
"What is this...?" Lynn thought as she gritted her teeth, hating what was happening in front of her as you took notice of the state of emotions she was in.
"Come on out, demon!" Sanemi smiled as he stabbed the box once more. "Look, it's the human blood you love so much!" He said as he kicked the box before lifting the latch open with the tip of his blade.
"Stop it..." Lynn muttered as Shinobu and you heard what she said, and Nezuko slowly rose from the box, shakily and in pain, as everyone watched closely.
"Ne...zuko..." Tanjirou groaned as Lynn began shaking from hearing the pain and anger in his voice.
"Stop it...!" She gritted her teeth as Shinobu held Lynn's shoulder to keep her back, meanwhile Nezuko turned towards Sanemi, glaring at him with rage as saliva seeped from her muzzled mouth.
"COME ON!!!!" Sanemi yelled as he raised his bloody arm towards her in a taunting manner.
"STOP IT!!!!" Lynn cried out for mercy as a breeze blew past the Hashira and the Master.
In mere moments, Sanemi was shocked and gritting his teeth when he felt a hot and stinging sensation burning his neck. Everyone was shocked and the Hashira's all drew their blades when they saw you standing behind Sanemi, with your claws glowing green and a mist coming off your hand.
"You have no clue what real demons are. These weaklings that are swayed by human blood are nothing compared to the demons that came before your family was even thought of. If this demon girl is indeed swayed by your blood, then you will die by my poison claw, as an example of a true demon's power. If not, then she and the girl over there have just spared your life." You said as Himejima and Rengoku ran in front of the Master in defensive stances. "Now then, let's wait and see what this girl chooses to do with a vermin like you." You said as Lynn's cries urged you to jump in and you suddenly began acting out of your usual character, threatening this scum you found disgusting to be close to.
