Chapter 11: Dreams Far Out of Reach

After dispatching the first demon they encountered on the train, Rengoku lead the four slayers behind him to the next train car over to find the other demon he knew was aboard the train. While trailing behind her friends, the Tenseiga at Lynn's side was continuously rattling, as if trying to warn her of great danger. She held it close to her while continuing forward, and after sliding the door open to the next car, civilians were screaming while running by to get away as Rengoku stood at the front of the formation with a stern look while the demon propped itself off the ground using the seats and hissed an unnerving sound from its mouth.

"Oh no! There's someone trapped!" Lynn gasped as they all saw a man duck down t avoid the hand that landed on the edge of the seat in front of him as he screamed when the demon put its face right before him.

"You will not lay a finger on that man!" Rengoku called out as the demon turned back to look at him, giving a full view to everyone what its face looked like.

"How should we go about this situation?" Lynn asked as she stood behind Rengoku, while Tanjirou and Inosuke ran up to stand in front of the Hashira, on both sides of him.

"Didn't you hear me? I said I'm your opponent." Rengoku taunted the demon before him as Zenitsu was hidden behind on the seats in the back.

"What the hell is it? It's got long arms!" Zenitsu said while shivering at the sight of its abnormally long limbs.

"All right! First come, first served!" Inosuke exclaimed with excitement as he charged forward with no plan.

"Hold up! We gotta save the passenger first!" Tanjirou tried to stop Inosuke.

"It won't matter once I destroy that thing!" Inosuke argued as he stubbornly continued head on with his blades at the ready, but Lynn noticed something strange going on with its body.

"Watch out!" Lynn screamed to Inosuke.

Before Inosuke could reach the demon to cut off its head, the beast suddenly let loose two tentacles from its chest, catching the boar-headed slayer off guard as he barely parried the attack. Inosuke had flipped out of its way, but was now in a position where the demon was going to grab him with its large hand. Before it could however, Rengoku moved at speeds unthinkable, catching Inosuke and sitting him down in a seat before dashing back, avoiding the appendages coming at him by ducking under and simultaneously grabbing the passenger. With one more leap, he was back in front of Tanjirou and Lynn as he stood the passenger back on his feet and patted his shoulder.

"You'll be safe in the back of the train. Go on." Rengoku said as the passenger briefly thanked him before running off scared towards the back of the train while Rengoku turned back towards the demon. "We're good to go now. Let's finish him off in short order." He said as the demon turned to face the three slayers towards the back of the train car.

The demon growled before leaping forward to attack them all, but Lynn and Tanjirou were both left to merely catch a glimpse of Rengoku before he dashed ahead to meet the demon halfway. The demon raised its hand to crush Rengoku, while the Hashira leaned down and gripped the hilt of his sword at his side while beginning his technique.

"Flame Breathing..." Rengoku started as he crouched down low below the demon. "Second Form..." He used his thumb to push the blade out of its hilt before like a rising fire, swiping his blade upwards to the neck of the demon. "Rising Scorching Sun!" With one swing from his blade, the demon was beheaded as its body fumbled about in its place, destroying a few seats before collapsing dead and turning to ash.

"Tha...Tha..." Lynn turned to see Tanjirou muttering an unknown word before growing a disturbed face from what she saw next. "That was awesome, Bro! Talk about brilliant sword skills, man! Please make me your apprentice!" Tanjirou had suddenly turned into a huge fanboy for Rengoku.

"Fine by me! I'll make a fine swordsman out of you!" Rengoku accepted with his usual proud smile and arms crossed across his chest as Zenitsu and Inosuke popped in like fanboys as well.

"Me, too, please!" Zenitsu said as his teeth almost appeared bucktooth like.

"Me, three!" Inosuke said as if something was stuck in his throat.

"I'll train all of you!" Rengoku said as the three boys were circling around him with excitement.

"Big Bro Rengoku!" They all praised him with glee. "Bro!" Tanjirou exploded with a huge smile. "Bro!" Zenitsu had an estranged bucktoothed face with his arms crossed and thumbs up. "Bro!" Inosuke spoke strangely again as they all exclaimed one last time. "Big Bro Rengoku!" They all cheered as Rengoku just laughed at their antics and Lynn sighed while facepalming.

"Boys..." Lynn sighed as she was just mentally finished with trying to understand their antics, but smiled regardless at how fun the situation seemed at the moment.

However, the moment was cut short when the lights began to flicker among the train again before cutting out. When they came back on, it was revealed that the demon attacks that they had bared witnessed to, were nothing but an illusion as they were all still sat in their seats, fast asleep. Lynn was leaned against the window, Tanjirou was leaned against Rengoku's shoulder while the Hashira slept with his arms crossed and head down, and Inosuke was passed out over Zentsu who was also asleep upright. Running back through the rear train cars, the conductor who punched their tickets tripped on his feet and fell to his knees as he had a panicked look on his face with tears streaming from his eyes.

"I did as I was told! I punched their tickets and put them to sleep!" The conductor said with panic and desperation as he bowed his head to no one in front of him. "Please! Put me to sleep, too, now! Please let me be reunited with my dead wife and daughter! I'm begging you! I'm begging you...!" He pleaded as strange noises came from the roof of the car before a dismembered hand fell in front of him.

"Sure thing." A mouth opened and spoke as it stood up on its fingers and stared at him with an eye and toothy grin as there were tattos on the fingers that said 'dream' on the appendages. "You did a good job." The hand spoke with an strange and unpleasantly soft tone as it hummed in glee. "Go to sleep." Were its final words to the conductor before a strange feeling hit the man and he passed out on the floor. "Have a nice dream where you can meet your family." The hand said before someone spoke up behind it.

"Excuse me." The hand turned and looked to where five young children, two boys and three girls around the same ages as Tanjirou and the other three, were on their knees with tired eyes and desperate looks. "What do you want us to do?" The girl knelt in front who seemed like the leader of that group asked.

"Their slumber will grow deeper in a little while. Wait here until then. Perceptive Demon Slayers sometimes wake up sensing the presence of bloodthirsty demons. When you tie the ropes, be careful not to touch their bodies. I will have to stay in the first car for a while. Hang on until everything's ready to go..." The hand spoke as they looked to see the smile on the conductor's face. "...so that you can have blissful dreams." The hand instructed the children on what to do.

"Okay." They all said in understanding of the instructions they were given while the slayers were all fast asleep, falling deeper into their slumber.

Darkness was the only thing that filled Lynn's vision, and it was completely silent all around her. She tried moving, but her body felt heavy, almost as if something was on top of her and pinning her to the ground. Trying more and more to get her body to do what she wanted it to, a light began to fill her eyes and a few noises could he faintly heard.

"Lynn...Lynn..." A voice echoed through the darkness as the light grew brighter in Lynn's vision. "Wake up, Lynn." The voice was now recognizable as a woman's voice as it spoke in a soft tone. "Lynn, my dear. Wake up." The words spoke as all of Lynn's senses rushed back to her and her eyes shot open.

"Huh!?" Lynn gasped while sitting up from where she laid.

Sitting in the middle of a room and atop a tatami floor, the girl looked around slowly to try and take in the environment around her and get a sense of where she was. The room was decently sized to fit about ten people comfortably, and in the center was a kotatsu that Lynn had her lower body covered by. Though, feeling more weight on her than usual, she looked down to see a small head of black hair just below her face and heard faint and gentle breathing noises come from under her.

"W-What...?" Lynn spoke in shock as she recognized the one that was sat in her lap. "S-Shosuke...?" She spoke in a shaky tone as she uttered the name of her little brother that she recalled being dead.

"Ah, you're finally awake." Lynn heard a voice from her left and turned to see her mother peek out from a door of another room as her hair was tied up under a cloth and the sleeves of her kimono were rolled up. "Wake up your little brother. Supper is almost ready. Go and fetch your father, as well please." Lynn's mother asked kindly before disappearing behind the door again as a fragrant smell began to fill the air.

"M-Mom...?" Lynn muttered before gasping and realizing how strange this all was. "W-Wait a minute! I-It can't be! They died two years ago! What's going on?! Where is everyone?" Lynn tried to recollect everything that happened, but felt something strange on her.

Looking down, she was surprised to see herself dressed not in the Demon Slayer Corps uniform, but a blue kimono that was designed with red stirpes across the cloth. She also noticed the disappearance of the two swords that were at her side as well. Lynn stared at everything around her to try and see if anything was off, but it all felt so real, so warm, so memorable. Before anymore thoughts could come to fruition, the young boy in her lap stirred around.

"Mmmm, Big Sister...?" Shosuke spoke in a tired tone as Lynn froze up when she looked down and watched him lean his head back and give a warm smile. "Good morning..." The young boy laughed as tears began to form in her eyes.

"Shosuke!" Lynn suddenly hugged her younger brother and buried her face in the crook of his neck as he was surprised by this.

"W-What's wrong, Big Sister?" Shosuke asked as Lynn just wept while holding him closely in her arms.

"Nothing..." Lynn said as these warm and tender feeling overtook all other forms of thoughts and she was completely set in the world she was in while pulling away and looking at her brother with a smile. "Just a bad dream..." Lynn said before nuzzling her cheek against Shosuke's and relishing in the tender moment, falling deeper and deeper into this peaceful dream.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, the Mugen Train's horn blared through the night as it continued to barrel forward on the set course laid out by its tracks. Stood a top the steam engine and enjoying the breeze of the passing wind was the demon who was responsible for all the incidents that have occurred on the Mugen Train, enjoying the terror he was causing with a pleased smile across his lips.

"To be able to die while dreaming...Just how lucky are you?" The demon spoke as it held its handless wrist behind its back with its other hand. "It doesn't matter how powerful a Demon Slayer you are. A human's driving force is the heart, the spirit!" He spoke with glee as it raised its empty wrist and the missing hand that was crawling behind him, jumped up and reattached itself to his arm. "All you have to do is destroy the spiritual core. You can kill them just like that!" He spoke sadistically while gesturing and playing around with his hands, playfully choking himself while imagining it was his victims. "All human hearts are the same. So fragile and weak, like glasswork." He reveled the moment as he felt his victory was assured.

Meanwhile, back in the train car, the five young ones who were working with the sleep demon were currently tying themselves to the Demon Slayers with a special rope they were given by the demon. They were careful to make sure not to touch them, and as they did, one of the girls was tying the rope around Lynn's wrist, but stopped when startled by the rattling noise coming from her side.

"Do we tie ourselves to them by the wrist?" One of the other girls spoke up and snapped her out of trance as the girl tying herself to Lynn turned to her allies.

"That's right. Don't forget about what he warned us about." The leader of the group said before all preparations were complete and each of them were tied to their respective Slayer.

"Take a deep, slow breath...while you count." One of the boys said as they all took their seats and closed their eyes, the girl tied to Lynn sitting in the seat directly behind the female Slayer.

"One...Two...Three...Four...Five...Six..." The girl counted in her head as she felt herself fall deeper and deeper into sleep and enter Lynn's subconscious.

The girl soon found herself in a completely different place from the train. She was standing in the middle of a forest that had its light shine dimly through the openings in the trees above. The girl wore a blue kimono and dark green obi sash as she looked around to try and process everything around her. While taking in her surroundings, the sound of wood chopping could be heard and she followed the noise to find herself standing behind a tree, staring at a small home in the woods where a tall man with black hair and dark eyes, was chopping wood into an assortment of different sizes. The man gave one last swing with a hand axe before staring down the side of a long piece of wood that reached from his chest to the dirt below him.

"Alright, this will make good building wood for the new shed." The man said with a pleased smile before a voice called out.

"Dad!" The girl who entered Lynn's dream turned her sights and saw Lynn running over to the man with a smile as she grabbed his arm. "Mom says to come inside now, we're having supper." Lynn said.

"I see. Tell her I'll be inside in a few minutes. Let me just put this wood away first." Lynn's father said as the young girl rushed back inside.

"Okay, it doesn't seem like she thinks anything is wrong..." The girl who infiltrated Lynn's dream thought as she turned back towards the forest. "Now, to the edge of this dream. Before the dream ends." She thought as she rushed off while remembering what the demon instructed her to do.

"The dream world I show them isn't infinite. It's circular, with the dreamer in its center. The realm of the subconscious exists just outside the dream, where you'll find the spiritual core. That's what you must destroy. Do that, and the dreamer will become crippled." Were the instructions left by the demon as the girl wandered about the forest with her hands stretched out in front of her, trying to find the edge of the dream as night began to fall.

Meanwhile, Lynn was in the middle of her home, enjoying the meal she was sharing with her family. The joyful atmosphere, the gentle smiles, and the warm feeling her family members all gave off were everything Lynn loved about her home. Nothing felt wrong. It all felt like this was the real world, and the world where she saw herself as a Demon Slayer was nothing but a long nightmare that she had whilst sleeping. This was perfect, this was Lynn's true happiness. However, even with having everything in her life, there was something tugging at her heart that she didn't know what it was. Lynn sat at her place at the table as her mother and father both looked to her.

"Lynn..." The girl's mother spoke up and snapped Lynn out of her trance. "Are you okay? You've stopped eating." She said as the young girl looked down to see her hands have stopped moving and they were just holding the small bowl and chopsticks in her grasp.

"Ah, sorry...it's nothing." Lynn thought as her father patted her on the head.

"That's what happens when you take a nap too long. Come on, hurry and finish your meal so you can get proper sleep." Her father said as Lynn nodded before finishing her meal, and now they had all gotten ready for sleep, snuggled in their futons while the moonlight shined down upon them through the small openings of their walls.

Lynn couldn't help but stare up at the crescent moon that lingered behind the clouds above, and felt a cold breeze of air fill the house. This wind felt nostalgic, almost as if she recognized the feeling that this wind gave off and knew where it came from. Turning to look at her sleeping family, Lynn stared them for a few moments before quietly getting up and exiting the home as she stood outside her house in the cold night. Meanwhile, the girl who infiltrated her dream, began to wonder how much farther to the edge of the dream, but soon found her answer as she reached an invisible barrier she couldn't push through normally.

"This is it..." The girl muttered to herself as she stared at the rippling barrier she was touching as she pulled out a special ice pick of sorts and stabbed it into the barrier.

However, the moment she plunged the blade into the barrier, a sudden gust of powerful wind blew through the entire area, knocking the girl down as she cried out in shock. The wind also reached Lynn as she felt something was terribly wrong now. While standing and looking around in caution, Lynn suddenly heard a rattling nose come from her side and slowly looked to see the Tenseiga at her hip along with her other blade she thought was just nothing but a dream. Looking down at her clothes as well, they changed from her kimono and were now once again the Demon Slayer uniform she saw in her 'assumed dream' before.

"W-What is this...? I-Is this not real...?" Lynn was in shock before the sound of a wolf's cry filled the air, and in that moment, all her memories of what happened on the train came back. "That's right...I was on the train with Tanjirou and..." She muttered as the Tenseiga was beginning to rattle even more as she looked down and slowly reached for it. "You tried warning me, didn't you, Tenseiga?" She thought as she grabbed the blade by the hilt and unsheathed it as it was beginning to pull in a direction out to the forest.

Meanwhile, the girl who was knocked back from striking the barrier, was trying to pick herself off the ground as she tried comprehending what had just happened. While sitting up, there was a faint growl that came from the darkness around her as she froze up from the snarl. She looked around trying to find what was making the noise, but the sound of thunderous footsteps could only be heard circling around her as she was beginning to tremble in fear. It was as if Lynn's dream world became the girls worst nightmare, and to make it worse, there was a burning feeling that was itching at the back of the girl's head. She slowly turned around to see what was behind her, and from the darkness, two blood red glowing eyes appeared along with the same snarling noises she heard from before.

"W-Wha...Wha...Ahhh...!" The girl was gasping in fear before the beast that was staring at her let out a putrid and terrifying roar that sent the girl running back in the direction she came, crying in fear and terror.

The girl cried out as tears fell from her eyes, running aimlessly through the forest as she heard the thunderous steps of the beast chase behind her. The girl ran as fast as she could, desperately trying to live as she had forgotten all about the reason she was in that dream world in the first place. However, the chasing noises stopped and the eyes fell farther and farther behind almost as if it had given up the chase, confusing the girl. Though, before she could think about anything, the girl heard another set of footsteps coming from in front of her as she slid to a stop across the leaves and was wide-eyed when she saw Lynn standing in front of her. The young slayer had an enraged look on her face with pure anger burning in her eyes while she gripped the Tenseiga tightly in her hands.

"I'm going to only ask you this once..." Lynn said as she tightened her grip on Tenseiga as the moonlight shined down upon her and the blade while she made the girl even more scared. "...Who the hell are you!?" The Demon Slayer yelled through the night as another wolf cry filled the air and Lynn's happiness all came crashing down around her, and she stared at the girl with tears in her eyes, angry that her happiness was nothing more but a dream that could never be obtained.
