Chapter 8
The sheriff and I sat in the security room of the bank that was robbed yesterday. We watched the footage from the security cameras.
"There's our missing Tommy Gun." I said.
Peter nodded. "These are definitely our girls."
I pointed at the screen. "Look at the way she watches the room. She's uncertain, nervous."
"Of course she is... The other girl seems rock solid, though. She knows what she's doing." The sheriff added.
"So, how'd our missing girl wind up with a couple of professionals?" I asked.
The sheriff leaned back in his chair. "Maybe she was kidnapped."
"Maybe she knew them."
Peter stood then. "The first gas station. It was on her walk. According to her friends, she spent a lot of time there. Chatting it up with the clerk."
"The girl in the dirt worked there. Maybe our other girl is the clerk."
The sheriff paced around the small room, rubbing his chin. "So, it was an inside job."
"Appears that way, but where does our missing girl fit into all this?"
She sheriff raised his hand, seemingly upset. "Maybe she was caught up in the romance of it? Maybe she watched a few to many crime movies?"
His radio crackled to life then. "Sir, we have a 211 in progress."
We shared a look before charging out of the bank, hopping in his car before taking off down the street...
—————
We sat in the car outside the bank. The familiar nerves running through my body.
Connie checked her shotgun before pulling her mask over her head. "Ready?"
I pulled my mask down. "Let's do it."
She gave my hand a squeeze before stepping out of the car, me following close behind her.
She charged in first, letting off a shot into the ceiling. "Everyone on the fucking floor!"
"This is a robbery!" I added.
Everyone let out a yell as they dropped to the floor.
I watched the room as Connie made her way to the desk. "Small bills in the bag." She said, dropping an empty duffel bag on the counter.
Connie turned to me, then, checking her watch. "Two minutes, B."
I nodded, before the sound of a gunshot rang out through the room.
Everyone yelled out in fear as I turned to Connie, seeing blood leaking from her stomach.
Everything turned to slow motion as I spun around, seeing a man standing behind me, gun and badge in hand. "Drop the gun!" He yelled, his voice echoing in my ears.
Connie dropped to the floor, blood soaking her shirt.
"Connie!" I yelled, dropping to her side as the man approached us.
"Drop the fucking gun!" He ordered.
I put my hand over the wound. "Stay with me, Connie."
Connie let out a groan as she pushed me to the side, lifting her shotgun.
She let out a shot, splintering the man's leg. He dropped to the ground, screaming out in pain.
I stood quickly. "Connie! He's a cop!"
The man let off another shot, hitting Connie in the shoulder, causing her to drop her gun.
I had to stop him, or he was going to kill her...
Without thinking, I raised the Tommy Gun and squeezed the trigger, letting out a hail of bullets. They hit the man center mass, dropping him hard.
I froze then, seeing a pool of blood puddling around the man's body.
Connie grabbed my shoulder. "We have to go."
"C-Connie... I-" She pulled me towards the door, cutting me off.
We made it out to the car and she pushed me into the passenger seat before starting it up and flooring it down the street.
I threw my gun in the backseat and ripped the mask off, my heartbeat picking up, my breathing becoming labored. "Connie... I killed that man..."
She ripped her mask off. "You did what you had to do."
I felt a few tears leak down my cheeks then. "He was a cop, Connie..."
"And, now he's a dead cop... There's nothing we can do about it now..." She replied, pressing the mask against the wound on her stomach.
"I wanna go home..." I said, wiping at my eyes.
"It's to late for that... You killed a cop, Briar... They won't let you go home."
"I was just trying to keep you safe... If I just explain that to-"
"Briar! There's nothing you can do, now!" She yelled, silencing me.
Quiet tears continued to flow as I rested my head against the window, watching our surroundings pass us by...
—————
The sheriff looked over the dead body. "Jesus wept."
"He was an off duty cop, just here to pull out a few bucks for his sons birthday." I said, rubbing my forehead.
"Buckshot to the left leg and .45 caliber slugs finished him off." One of the deputies said as she approached.
"Who's blood is that?" The sheriff asked, pointing at a trail of blood leading out the door.
"Witnesses said the cop got a shot off first, struck on of the robbers." I said.
"Which one?" The sheriff asked, slight panic in his voice.
"The clerk."
He rubbed his forehead, closing his eyes. "Ok... She's wounded. She won't be able to make it far."
"We just got word that an old DeSoto was seen heading east out of town." The deputy said.
The sheriff gave me a nod. "Let's go, we might still be able to catch up to them..."
—————
Connie pulled the car over to the side of the road, her breathing weak, before stepping out.
I jumped out as she collapsed to her knees, spitting up some blood.
"Connie, stay with me." I said, kneeling next to her.
She took my hand in hers. "I don't have much longer, Briar..."
I rested my head on her shoulder. "Connie, I can't do this without you... Hell, I don't even know how to do this with you..."
"Briar... You have to keep moving..." She said, placing her bloody hand against my cheek.
"Not without you, Connie... I won't leave you here..."
The sound of sirens in the distance caught our attention.
We both looked down the deserted road. "Briar... If you don't go now... They're going to kill us both..."
Tears flowed from my eyes. "Connie..."
She pulled me into a fierce kiss before getting to her feet. "C'mon, you have to go..."
She pushed me into the drivers seat and slammed the door shut before pulling the Tommy Gun from the back seat.
"What're you gonna do..?" I asked.
She looked into my eyes. "I'm giving you an out... Take it..."
