Chapter 5
We followed the smoke and a lone fire truck down a deserted road.
"Owner said there's been a car burning for the last hour." I said.
Peter glanced at me. "Is it his?"
I shook my head. "No, but grandpas '58 DeSoto Fireflite is missing from the garage."
Peter nodded. "So, they burned the getaway car and got themselves a replacement."
"From the looks of it, yeah." I replied.
We pulled onto the property shortly after, the firefighters putting out what was left of the fire.
Peter walked over to inspect the car while I approached the owner. "You Mr. Price?"
The man took his hat off. "Yes, sir. I don't know who's car that is."
"We have an idea. But, can you tell me, is there anything else missing other than your grandfathers car?" I asked.
He nodded. "Yes, his old .38 Colt revolver."
I nodded. "Alright, sir, we'll do our best to get your things back."
He nodded back and thanked me.
I rejoined Peter by the burned out car. "Are we gonna be able to pull any prints from this junk?"
He shook his head. "Most likely not."
"You might not have to." One the the firefighters said, pointing to a freshly buried hole, an old shovel laying next to it.
Peter and I looked over the loose dirt. "You thinking what I'm thinking?" He asked.
"Our body's under there." I replied.
He picked up the shovel and started digging, eventually unearthing a young, blonde girl. Blood staining her clothes, obvious gunshot wounds to her hip and chest.
I knelt down over the body.
"Poor thing, couldn't have been much older then twenty." Peter said.
"Buckshot wounds to the hip, this is definitely our body." I said.
He knelt down next to me, inspecting the hip wound. "This wasn't enough to kill her."
I slipped some gloves on before gently turning the body over. "No, but this is."
Peter inspected the small bullet hole in her back. "Accomplices shot her in the back?"
"Looks that way, but why?"
He shrugged as he stood. "Get some people down here. I want that bullet dug out."
I pulled out my phone. "You're the boss..."
—————
Connie and I flew down the empty road, radio blasting.
She gave me a quick sideways look, smiling.
I smiled back. "What is it?"
A slight blush grew on her cheeks. "You're a really pretty girl, you know that?"
I looked down, a blush of my own forming. "Thank you... So are you..."
She took my hand in hers then. "Wanna do something cool?"
I nodded.
She flashed me a smirk before slamming on the brakes and veering off into the grassy fields surrounding us on both sides.
She shut the car off before stepping out.
I followed her. "So, what's this cool thing?"
She pulled her pistol out and handed it to me.
It was heavy in my hand. "What am I supposed to do with this?"
She gestured to our open surroundings. "Take a shot. Anywhere you want."
I looked down at the gun, then to a small tree a few feet away.
With a deep breath I aimed the gun at the tree and squeezed the trigger. I let out a yelp as the recoil almost pushed the gun over my head. "Holy shit!"
Connie laughed, stepping behind me, resting her hands on my shoulders. "I'll steady you, try it again."
With the adrenaline pumping, I took aim again.
"Take in a deep breath, focus on that tree and nothing else. When you're ready, squeeze the trigger, slowly." Connie whispered in my ear.
I did what she said, squeezing the trigger, sending a shot right through the middle of the tree. "Woo!"
Connie patted my shoulder. "That's my girl." Then, she took the gun back, pointing it one handed at the tree.
I covered my ears as she emptied the magazine into the tree, hitting every shot.
"Damn, you're good." I said.
She blew some smoke from the barrel, flashing me a wink.
Then, she dropped the magazine. "We need some more ammo."
I faced her then. "Why?"
A mischievous smirk played at her lips. "We still have a long way to go and not nearly enough money to make it... Yet..."
I took a step back. "What are you saying?"
She shrugged, placing the gun in her belt. "I'm not saying anything... I'm asking you if you're with me?"
I looked down at my feet. "I don't know..."
She took my hand then. "Briar... I'm not Cindy... I'm going to give you a choice... Either you can come with me, on what could be the wildest ride of your life... Or, I can leave you here. No harm, no foul... You can call the police, they'll come pick you up and take you home... You've done nothing wrong, you can still get out... It's your choice..."
I felt the adrenaline coursing through every vein in my body, my mind was already made up. "I'm in..."
She smiled. "Good, then let's go get some ammo..."
So, we hopped back in the car and drove off...
After a couple hours, we pulled into a small, country town. A local gun shop located on the outskirts.
We pulled into the parking lot and got out. Connie handed me the old revolver from the barn. "Follow my lead."
I hid the gun behind my back as we entered the empty building.
A man behind the counter looked up at the ringing of the bell. "How can I help you ladies?"
Connie pulled her gun, pointing it at him. "We need a few things."
I could hear my heartbeat in my ears as I pulled my gun, pointing it at the man.
He raised his hands, standing straight up. "L-listen, ladies, anything you need, it's yours. Just, please don't shoot me."
Connie walked up to the counter, hopping over it. "We need all the boxes of .45's and .38's you got."
"Don't forget the shotgun." I said, Connie's confidence seemingly rubbing off on me.
She winked at me. "Good thinking. .12 gauge to. Buckshot only."
The man nodded, quickly grabbing a bag and dumping ammo boxes into it.
I looked around the shop as Connie kept an eye on the man.
My eyes landed on a gun in a glass case. It was old, like something out of a gangster flick. "What about this?"
Connie and the man looked over.
"Th-that's a genuine Model 1921 Tommy Gun. Fully automatic, World War II vintage. It's worth a small fortune." The man said.
I smirked, busting the glass open with my pistol. "Well, put it on my tab."
After grabbing everything we could, we made our exit. "And, remember, you never saw us here." Connie said, closing the door behind us as we sprinted into the parking lot.
We loaded the guns and ammo into the car and took off out of town.
My heart thundered in my chest. "That was..."
"A rush, huh?" Connie asked.
I smiled, my hands shaking from excitement. "Hell yeah..."
