Chapter 3

We were currently barreling down a deserted highway, wide open land surrounded us on both sides. There was nothing and nobody for miles.

I sat in the passenger seat, bag of cash hugged tightly against me, while Connie drove, frantically checking the rear view mirror.

Cindy sat in the back, blood staining the seat as she tried to patch the wound on her hip. Her face was pale and sweaty, her breathing labored.

I looked down at the cash, there had to be at least a few hundred dollars in this bag, not to mention the rest in the backpack. My fingers were itching to touch it, to feel it. I've never held that much money in my hands before.

As I opened the bag, Cindy pointed the shotgun against the back of my head. "Don't even think about it."

"Knock it off, Cindy." Connie defended.

"I will, once she hands over the bag." Cindy replied.

I begrudgingly did so.

Cindy snatched the bag before depositing it in the backpack, leaning her head back against it afterwards.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"The first abandoned house we can find. I need to get this buckshot out of my hip." Cindy replied sternly.

"We have an old barn coming up." Connie said.

"Any sign of people?" Cindy asked.

Connie just shook her head.

"That'll work." Cindy said, sitting up with a pained groan.

Connie turned down a long, dirt path leading to the barn.

As we pulled up to it, we noticed a small farmhouse not far from the barn. It looked decrepit, like no one's been there for a long time.

Connie and I stepped out, inspecting the old barn.

Cindy moved to the drivers seat. "Open the doors, we have to get this car out of sight."

Connie and I pulled the doors open, seeing a few bales of hay strewn around. Then, we looked up at the collapsing ceiling, a lone crow the only sign of life for miles.

It cawed and flew off as Cindy pulled the car inside, Connie and I closing the doors behind it.

Cindy shut the car off before staggering out, sitting heavily on a bale of hay, shotgun clutched tightly in her hands. Her breathing was getting worse, the extreme blood loss getting the better of her.

Connie knelt down in front of her. "You don't look so good."

"I'll be fine." Cindy snapped.

Connie just shook her head before walking over the other side of the barn.

I still eyed Cindy, wondering how long she would last without a trip to the hospital.

"You plan on proposing?" She asked.

I snapped back to reality, shaking my head quickly.

She gestured the shotgun at me. "Then, fuck off."

I hesitantly did so, making my way towards the loft, climbing the ladder to the second floor.

Some more hay littered the floor, an old chest sitting in the corner.

I walked over to it, blowing some dust off before fiddling with the rusty latch.

After unlatching it, I opened the lid, seeing some old mechanical parts inside and a small, wooden box.

I pulled the box out and opened it, seeing an old revolver sitting inside.

My breathing picked up. This could be my way out of here... But, did I really want to go..?

I grabbed the revolver, grasping it tightly in my hand.

With Cindy injured, it was now or never.

I crept back down the ladder, eyeing Cindy. She was picking at her wound with a pocket knife, the shotgun just out of reach.

That's when I quickly pulled the revolver, pointing it at her. "Hands up!" I ordered.

Cindy looked up, a slight smirk playing at her lips.

Connie ran up. "Briar, don't do this."

I pointed the gun at her then, putting distance between us. "I'm sorry, but I have to get out of here."

With me momentarily distracted, Cindy reached for the shotgun, pointing it at me. "Drop the gun." She said.

I quickly spun on her and pulled the trigger... But, the gun clicked.

My heart sank as Connie snatched the gun, checking the cylinder. "It's empty, Cindy, you can lower the gun."

Cindy stood, shotgun still trained on me. "Empty or not, she didn't know that. She tried to kill me."

Fear spread through every inch of me as she approached, pointing the gun right between my eyes. "I say we finish her off right now, it'll be years before anyone finds the body all the way out here."

"Cindy!" Connie yelled.

She turned quickly, pointing the shotgun at Connie now. "No! I'm done! You can't save her now!"

Before she could turn back to me, my instincts kicked in, the adrenaline pushing me forwards, tackling Cindy to the floor.

She let out a pained yell as the shotgun slid from her hand.

I jumped for it, but Cindy grabbed my ankle, holding me back as she crawled over me, reaching past me for the shotgun.

I struggled, panic setting in. My life flashed before my eyes as her fingertips grazed the gun.

Then, a shot rang out and the room went silent.

I could hear my heartbeat in my ears as Connie kicked Cindy's lifeless frame off of me.

I rolled over, looking up at Connie.

She looked down at me, tears in her eyes, pistol trained on me.

"Connie, please-"

"Shut up!" She yelled.

I raised my hands, my whole body shaking.

She blinked a few times, more tears rolling down her cheeks. "J-just shut up... A-and let me think..."

I looked down the barrel of the pistol, to afraid to breath.

Then, she backed up, wiping her eyes as she lowered the gun.

I sat up on the floor, looking over at Cindy's body before getting to my feet.

Connie leaned against the car, dropping the gun on the hood.

I slowly approached her. "Connie... Thank you..."

She spun quickly. "Goddammit, Briar! Why'd you have to do that..?"

"She was gonna kill me and you know it..." I replied, a few tears of my own welling up behind my eyes. "I-I had to do something..."

She let out a long, shaky breath. "You're right... I'm sorry..."

"Me to..." I said, pulling her into a hesitant hug.

She slowly wrapped her arms around me. "I'm sorry I got you into this..."

I pulled back, looking up into her eyes. "It's ok... There's nowhere I'd rather be then wrapped in your arms..."

She smiled a little despite the situation. "You're to cute for your own good."

I blushed, a small smile of my own forming as I rested my head against her chest.

Letting the silence of the night sink in...
