Chapter Six: Discoveries
Abby examined the notes from him and considered the clue they left her. That time portal opened in September for both of them. The bulk of the letters came much later, and she was nervous about reading them. For now, she would read what would have been the most recent for him.
September 20th, 1921
Dear Abby,
I went to town today and purchased the mirrors you told me existed in the house. They are all up now, but this letter is a test. I woke without seeing you, and that mirror had lost its magic. I wanted to know if you would get my messages if I placed them here. The funny thing is, I won't know because you aren't here in my time to take them out. I'll need you to tell me that.
This business of time is something most scientists don't understand in the 1920s. What we're experiencing, few people would believe possible. Including me. Anyway, after I put the mirrors up, I tried using the tall mirror to call you. It dawned on me that you haven't been born yet. That's a gasp, isn't it? That means you have to be the one to go back in time for it to work. At least that sounds logical. Though, in actuality, the past doesn't actually exist any longer. It's history.
Time travel may prove me wrong in your future, but for now, that doesn't exist.
Another clue I chewed on was the possibility that we have to stay in contact with each other or the connection stops. You told me that you liked history. When we see each other again, I want to test that too. You can tell me what the future looks like for me. Right now, they are calling this the 'Roaring Twenties' because of growing prosperity for everyone.
From what I see, that claim mainly refers to those in major cities like Chicago. For us back from war, the celebrations over prosperity made us question what was normal. I, for one, found my sanity through my small place, the tractor I was able to buy, growing food, and building things.
Because of my desire to show you my place in my time, I bought two hand mirrors, along with that dressing table you described. I have no doubts that it's the same one. Though, only you can tell me if the dresser is now different.
Open the top right drawer because that's where I put the mirrors. You use the pretty one with flowers on it. The round one with a brace on the back is for me. I can set it on the shelf in the kitchen. The new mirror I put up in there gives me to have a panoramic view. I hope in that way I can see you—if we can figure out how to connect again.
If we never do, I'm still glad we met. I think of you constantly.
Abby, try everything you can to come back to me. I'm not sure if the time of day could be a clue, but I had been outside chopping wood when I came inside and saw you. Perhaps, you could try that time of day. Regardless, keep the hand mirror with you. If the full-length mirror activates, I'm hoping our location won't matter, and we can be together.
Yours Truly,
Frank
For a moment, she sat holding the note to her breast. It was the first tangible thing she had from Frank that was meant for her. However, she also had to fight off the worry that encompassed her. She was afraid to think about what all those letters meant. A time gap could imply the mirrors weren't working, or they had traveled through time. Either scenario was better than the mirror had stopped working.
She didn't want to face this alone. Frank could virtually hold her hand while they discussed it. His attitude was positive. The thought of him buying her the small mirror was thoughtful and hopeful. She studied the standing mirror. "I sure hope you don't stop creating this phenomenon."
Abby stood to open the dresser drawer he mentioned and found the floral mirror. The second one he described wasn't there. She opened every drawer in the room hunting for it. But he also said he would use it in the kitchen. That thought had her racing out of the bedroom to see. She stopped as she stepped into the room and saw it sitting on the shelf as if he was waiting for her.
She picked it up and spoke as if he were there, "Frank, I just woke up and discovered the mirror quit working. I don't think our days are the same. The note I found in the box said you would keep the little mirror with you. Yet, when I looked in the drawer, it was gone. I found it in the kitchen and hope you can hear me.
"These little mirrors or the ones in the hall weren't here yesterday. That means, whatever changes you make in the house appears in my time. I know you told me to wait until evening to try connecting us, but I had to try. I hope you are here in the house and not outside since the magic mirror may not work outside."
It was no big surprise that his handsome face didn't turn up in the mirror, or in any of the others. She returned to their bedroom, sat on the edge of the bed, and stared at the magic mirror with waves frozen instead of moving. Everything she just said to him, went unheard. Those waves had to be active.
"Magic mirror, if anyone is listening, I want to talk to Frank." When nothing happened, she stood to pace. "Look, you brought us together. I strongly believe you have a purpose for it. We are probably test subjects or something like that. Frank hasn't married yet, and I'd bet that you are aware of it. For all I know, we are on some kind of time loop, and I become his wife because..." she stopped talking because she just noticed that those damn waves were active. "Now? You're going to connect us now? I'm not dressed yet!"
She grabbed the brush off the dresser to attack her morning snarls. That is when she saw him leaving the kitchen, walking down the hall, and entering the bedroom. "How did you..."
"I heard you lecturing the mirror about having a purpose of bringing us together. So, are you thinking I'm going to marry you?" He said with a laughing grin.
He obviously thought that was hilarious. "I wouldn't laugh too hard. If I suddenly travel back in time to join you, everything I've heard makes sense. You wrote in a journal that you first saw your wife in a mirror. That's me. Then, your wife disappears. If the mirror takes me there to your time, it could also return me to mine because I revealed too much, and it changed history."
The laughter left his face. "I suppose you could have. Though, if you came here, you may have hated it. There's no electricity or modern conveniences. Life for you would be much harder here with me. You may have asked the mirror to take you back to your time."
"You have no faith in me, do you? Well, I can't blame you. I'm a stranger. I think that mirror has its own agenda. I didn't do anything special to get the mirror to connect, other than say I wanted to talk to you. It worked like a phone call. You can reach me by leaving notes in the box.
"Frank, I'm thinking this is not our first time. I had a feeling about this house when I saw it. I was supposed to be here. The very next day we meet through the mirrors. I don't believe in coincidences this profound."
"I see what you mean. That does explain a few things," Frank said with a shrug. "Whatever it is, I'm glad we're back to seeing each other." He finally sat on the bed to converse with her in the new round mirror." He smiled and pointed at it. "It occurred to me that any dresser I bought would be the right one. It was the same with mirrors. I'm the past, and what I leave, you get."
"That makes perfect sense. I love what you did with the mirrors. I was able to watch you come from the kitchen, down the hall, and come in here to me. If you were actually here, I wouldn't see that happen. The hitch is that neither of us will have a lick of privacy as long as we're inside."
He laughed at her concern for privacy. "Honey, there's not much I haven't seen concerning you. Remember, I watched you bathe. What do you need privacy for," he asked with a big grin.
"Oh, I can think of a few things that I wouldn't want anyone watching me do. I may send you outside if I have to."
He laughed at her. "I bought those small mirrors to use outdoors. That means you may never escape my eyes unless you leave. Though, to see if they work will take careful testing. I don't know how that magic mirror connects to these others I just bought. It hardly makes sense."
"Today, things can connect wirelessly. There are devices, called a chip, that are so small it can barely be seen. The chip controls things. I would say that the mirror is either from my time or from my future. This means they went back in time to make sure you got it. When they did that, they could have set up some kind of power source too.
"Could we talk about the messages I found in that box? When I opened it, there were these." She held up the fistful of messages to show him. "I didn't read them yet. I only looked at the dates looking for the most recent one. What bothers me is the time gap I noticed. For some reason, you stopped using the box. Of course, I won't know why until I read them. The test to use it to communicate worked, but have these notes been in here for the past century?"
"If they were, why didn't I take them out before I died?"
"Yeah, that is a puzzle. Maybe it's a message." She went to the last one. "This one you wrote... wait, should I say? If I tell you, could it change?"
"If we're in a time loop, what does it matter? When did I write it?"
"Six months from now." She read it. "It says: 'You're sleeping and it looks like rain. I'm leaving to feed the chickens.'" She slowly looked at the mirror. "Frank, that sounds like I'm there with you. You could have left me the note, and I decided to keep it in the box."
"I agree, it does sound that way." He stared at her with wonder. "If that's so, then do you think this mirror is capable of time travel?"
"How would I know? But perhaps it's all connected to time travel." They both looked at the mirror and the waves with light inside of it. "It definitely looks electronic. I wonder if all we have to do is ask it?"
"Don't go trying it out. You need to think about this. Honey, I'm attracted to you, no doubt about that, and if you come, we will have sex. I'm being honest, so don't be offended."
She giggled. "In my time, many couples have sex and they aren't married. They live together too. Though historically speaking, it's different in the 1920s. They hide it." She laughed outright because she knew it was true.
He grinned hearing her laugh.
