Chapter Seven - Something's Wrong With Cas
"Thanks for doing this," Gabriel said.
"Of course. I... I get it, you know?" Dean replied. Castiel had just left the kitchen, though Dean wasn't sure why.
"Castiel doesn't know, though, so please... don't tell him," Gabriel begged. Dean nodded, and for a second neither of them spoke.
"Do you know why Cas is avoiding me? Am I doing something wrong? I'm just trying to help him, you know?" Dean asked. Gabriel paused before answering.
"Castiel has been through a lot, Dean. But he likes you, even if he won't admit it. Just... be careful with him," he said. Dean nodded and they both fell silent as Cas returned.
"I've done all I can do," Dean said a while later, heading for the door to put everything away. Cas had fallen asleep a few minutes ago, and Dean was having to try very hard not to stare.
"Thanks, I- Castiel?" Gabriel walked past Dean over to Cas, who was starting to twitch. Dean watched for a second before flinching as Cas let out a bloodcurdling scream. Dean started forward, but Gabriel held up a hand to stop him and shook Cas. "Castiel!" Cas jolted awake and hugged Gabriel tightly. Gabriel hugged him back until he calmed down.
"I, uh... I've done what I can. It's kinda late, do you two want to stay for dinner? Sammy's over at his friends house, I was gonna make some frozen pizza," Dean said. Gabriel asked Cas if that was okay, and when Cas nodded, Dean went to get it out of the freezer. As Cas went back to his drawing, Dean tried not to stare at him. He knew he shouldn't ask, but he couldn't stop thinking about Cas screaming. Eventually he decided to break the silence.
"So why did you guys move out here?" He asked. Cas looked up.
"Our dad came for work and brought Cas with him. I was in college, but it didn't suit me, so I came to be with my little brother!" Gabriel said, punching Cas' arm. Cas looked back down. "Hey, where's your bathroom?" Gabriel asked.
"Upstairs, second door on the left," Dean told him. Gabriel nodded and walked out of the kitchen, giving Cas a tiny nudge as he did.
"Uh... I didn't... I didn't see you much in school today," Dean said after a second. Cas shrugged. "Did you enjoy it? School, I mean," he continued. Cas shook his head. "Yeah, me neither. School sucks. I just want to be a mechanic anyway." Cas looked up at Dean. "Cars are really cool, though, right? I mean, just, the way they work and everything. It's fascinating." Dean was rambling now, but Cas almost looked happy. "Do you... do you want to see my car? It's just outside," he asked. Cas paused for a moment, then nodded. Dean grinned. "Awesome," he said, leading the way outside where his Impala sat in the driveway. Cas looked at it for a second, then pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket and unfolded it. It was the picture Dean had drawn.
"Hey, that... you kept that?" Dean asked. Cas blushed and nodded. Dean opened his mouth to say something else, but Gabriel poked his head out the door.
"The oven's going off, I think the pizza's done," he said. Dean nodded and he and Cas went back inside. Dean pulled the pizza out of the oven and plopped it onto the stove. He grabbed the pizza cutter out of the drawer and sliced the pizza.
"That smells good," Gabriel commented.
"It's pizza, of course it smells good," Dean said, grabbing three plates out of the cabinet. "Alright, help yourselves." Gabriel stepped forward and grabbed two of the plates.
"How many pieces do you want, little brother?" He asked Cas. Cas just stared at the drawing Dean had given him. "I'll take that as 'two'." Gabriel scooped two pieces onto Cas' plate, then two pieces onto his own. He set Cas' plate in front of him and jumped up onto the counter. Dean grabbed two pieces for himself and started digging in, and he had almost finished his first piece when he noticed that Cas hadn't touched his.
"Castiel... c'mon," said Gabriel, who apparently had also noticed. Dean put down his slice. Was this regular? Gabriel was acting like it was. Cas just pulled out his phone and started typing at something. Gabriel sighed and pulled out his own phone.
"Sorry, Dean," he apologized.
"Don't worry about it," Dean said. After a second of them texting each other, Gabriel looked back up.
"We've got to get going. Thanks for your help, and for dinner," he said.
"Of course. Any time you need help," Dean said, putting his plate down. Gabriel nodded and walked out. Cas stood up to follow, but paused for a second before bending over to scrawl something in the corner of the drawing he'd been working on. He didn't meet Dean's eyes as he straightened back up and walked out the door after his brother.
