Chapter Nine - World's Most Awkward Date

Castiel looked positively panicked, but Dean didn't know what else to do. He'd never known anyone who cut before, and it wasn't like he could tell Cas' dad. A date was just the first thing that he thought of.

"Come on. We're leaving now," Dean said, grabbing Cas' arm. When they got out to Dean's car, Cas sent him another text.

What about Sam?

"Sam's hanging out at his friend's house again today, he'll be fine," Dean said. Cas wrapped his arms around himself and stared out at the road as Dean pulled out of the parking lot. He wasn't quite sure where he was going yet, but eventually he decided to take Cas to his favorite diner.

When they got there, Dean sat there for a second before opening the car door. Cas got out after him and followed him up to the diner's door. Dean glanced at Cas before walking in. When they were seated, Cas just stared at the table.

"Cas... I'm really sorry," Dean said eventually. Cas looked up at him, looking shocked. He pulled out his phone and sent Dean a text.

Why?

"I'm sorry you had to go through that. I'm sorry that there was a reason you thought you had to go through that," Dean said. Cas looked back down. Dean fished for something else to say, but the waitress came over and asked for their drink order. Cas texted Dean that he wanted water, so Dean ordered for the both of them. After she left, Dean turned back to Cas.

"They, uh... They have a great bacon cheeseburger here," he said. Cas glanced at the menu, then up at Dean.

Why are we here? he texted

"Well... Because I like you, Cas. I really like you, and I wanted to do something nice for you," Dean said, watching him and trying to catch those blue eyes again.

You should stay away from me.

"Why? Why do you keep insisting that we can't be friends? Or... Or maybe even more than that?" Dean's heart was pounding, he felt  like he couldn't breathe. He couldn't believe he'd actually just said that. He'd meant it, but Cas had shown no indication of being the slightest bit gay. Cas looked halfway up, but still wouldn't meet Dean's eyes.

I'm cursed

Dean stared at the words for a second.

"First of all, that's bull. And second... I'd rather have you, cursed or not," he said. Cas finally met Dean's eyes, and Dean smiled at him. Cas looked back down, but Dean still considered it a small victory. When the waitress came back, Cas gave no indication of having an order, so Dean just got them both bacon cheeseburgers.

"So... how long have you been drawing?" Dean asked after another moment of silence.

Ten years

Dean nodded. "That's cool." Cas was still staring at the table. They sat in silence until their burgers arrived, and when Dean bit into his, he groaned.

"Dear god, that is amazing! I'd forgotten how good these were," Dean rambled, before noticing that Cas still hadn't touched his. "It really is good, Cas," he said, a bit reluctantly. Cas looked from his plate to Dean's face, then back down again. He still didn't touch it. Dean put his burger back down.

"Cas... I don't... I don't know what's going on with you, but... you need to eat. And this burger is really amazing," Dean said. Cas looked up and met Dean's eyes with his own. "Please?" Dean pleaded. Cas stared for a moment before slowly picking up the burger and taking a bite. Dean watched and smiled as the look on Cas' face changed, but was taken aback at the gusto with which Cas attacked the burger after the first bite. Dean watched him for a moment before returning to his own burger, his smile getting wider.

"So... I'm guessing you like it?" Dean asked when Cas swallowed his last bite. Cas looked back up, looking embarrassed.

"Don't worry, I..." Dean trailed off, feeling himself blush. Cas tilted his head and narrowed his eyes. "I think it's cute...." Dean muttered, almost too soft to hear. Suddenly, he was the one not meeting the other's eyes.

"Let's go," Dean said after a second. He stood up and dropped some cash on the table. Cas stood up also, grabbing his phone and following Dean out the door.
