4. Half Full, or Half Empty? Part 2*

I continue walking down the road, when a fancy looking house appears on the left side of the road.

"Wow," I gasp, as I see the big fence protecting the big white manison, with a huge yard in front of it.

"Somebody, help!"

It sounds like a girl.

I look towards the house, and I see a girl around my age running away from a male Nidoran.

"Get away from me!"

The Nidoran growls and lunges at her, tackling her to the ground.

"Ah! Somebody help!"

I have to do something.

"Don't worry I'm coming!" I yell, as I let go the handle of my wagon and I jump on the metal bars and climb to the top. I hop off and gently land on the ground.

The Nidoran stands a few feet away from the girl, growling and circling around here.

The girl whimpers as Nidoran slowly closes in, his horn aimed directly at her. He gives a battle cry and charges at the girl, as she lays there, too scared to move.

"No!"

I sprint towards them, as fast as I can.

I have to stop the Nidoran before he hurts her.

I dive, tackling the Nidoran, driving him into the ground. We roll on the ground, and we both quickly get up.

"Pick on someone your own size!"

Nidoran growls, and charges at me.

"Let's go!" I yell, as I charge at him.

I try to dodge his horn, but he manages to puncture my leg just a bit.

"Ow!"

I turn around and grab him by the neck, trying to keep him down. Nidoran squirms and growls, trying to hit me with his horn.

I suddenly feel really sick, and feel my strength slowly start fading away.

Nidoran escapes from my grasp, and stares at me.

His eyes are blood red, gnaring his teeth at me. He grins as soon as he realized that I'm no longer a threat.

The girl tries to get up to run away, but Nidoran pounces on her, pinning her to the ground.

"Help!"

Tears form at the corner of her eyes. Tears I could've easily prevented.

"Get off of her!"

I gather all my strength, and I tackle Nidoran off her the girl once again, landing on top of him.

"Go away!"

I pick Nidoran up and toss him towards the fence. Nidoran whimpers as he lands, but shakes it off. He aims his horn at me, and it starts glowing.

Uh oh.

Needles shoot straight at me.

I close my eyes and cover my face and wait for the pain to come.

But it never does.

I open my eyes and I see a big Rock Pokèmon in front of me, rolled up to protect me from the attack.

"Gravvy, turn that Defense Curl into a Rollout!"

The rock Pokèmon start rolling foward, straight towards Nidoran.

I stand ready on my toes, with my fists balled up.

"It's ok. I got it from here," a older girl says, as she puts her hand on my shoulder.

She has strawberry blonde hair, which most of it is hidden behind her straw hat. One of her arms is in a cast, and she has a fishing pole sticking out of her backpack.

"Go check up on Sarah. See if she's ok while I take care of this Nidoran," she says, as she walks over to the pokemon battling.

I turn and I see the girl I saved.

She has long brown hair with white creamy skin. She's wearing a white dress which now has dirt stains all over.

"I'm sorry for letting you get hurt," I say, offering her my hand.

"My name is Jason Pinedo. What's yours?"

She has a slight ting of red in her face as she accepts my hand.

"Sarah. Sarah Iren. Thank you so much. I'm not hurt at all! Are you ok? I saw you get hit earlier!"

"Oh this?" I say, as I look at my leg. My wound now has a nasty shade of purple where Nidoran's horn broke my skin.

"That's n-n-n-"

My body suddenly stops responding, and I'm falling foward.

"Jason!"

I land on the ground with a thud.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see the older girl has a hand on Nidoran's head, with her eyes closed. Then she lets go, and the Nidoran runs off.

Wow. That's so cool.

Then everything goes dark.

...

"How long has he been out?"

"For about a day."

"I didn't know Nidorans' posion was so strong."

"It isn't. But a boy his size, and malnutrition didn't help at all."

Who are these people?

I slowly open my eyes, and I see Dr. Bailey, with three other adults behind her.

"Good morning," I mumble.

"Good morning Jason. How are you feeling?" Dr. Bailey asks, as she touches my forehead.

"A little tired and sore, but good."

Two of the adults, a man and a woman, walk up next to the bed. They both look very similar to Sarah, the man having the same color hair and the woman having her skin tone.

"Hello Jason. We're Mr. and Mrs. Iren. We're Sarah's parents, and we just wanna thank you for everything you did to protect our daughter," the man says, offering his hand. I gladly take it.

"I do whatever I can to help someone in need, both Pokèmon and people alike!"

I take a look around the room.

"Where is Sarah anyways?"

"Yellow went and took her to the cafeteria, since she hasn't eaten anything in while," the other adult in the back says.

He's wearing white lab coat, with a red sweatshirt and tan pants. He has grey hairs and a friendly smile on his face.

"Yellow? Who's Yellow? And who are you?"

The old man chuckles.

"Yellow is the older girl that saved you from Nidoran's attack. My name is Professor Oak. I'm known as the Pokèmon professor."

"Nice to meet you and all, but why are you here?"

"Heh. Always asking questions. I like it. I saw a bit of your confrontation that male Nidoran and I see the fire you have. And I'm thinking I can use that fire when your older to be a great Pokèmon trainer. And I would like to invite you to one of my summer camps if-"

"Thanks for the offer Professor Oak, but I can't." I say, avoiding eye contact.

"Why not?"

"Go ahead Jason. Tell them how you lied to me and this hopistal," Dr. Bailey says.

Everyone has puzzled looks on their faces.

I take a deep breath and slowly let it out.

"My mommy's sick. She came into the hopistal, and she has been in bed since she got so sick she was spitting blood in our kitchen. She was able to be transported home, only if a family member came to take care of us. My aunt said she was going to come. She was supposed to come. But she changed her mind last second, deciding that her dream to be Kalos Queen or something was more important."

The room fills with silence, daring someone to break it.

"Does that mean you've been on your own, taking care of your mother?" Professor Oak asks.

"Yes. I had to. If I told Dr. Bailey she would need to talk people to take me away!"

"Jason, first answer me this. Is your mother still alive?" Dr. Bailey asks.

I nod my head.

"She's only alive because of the machines. And I want her to be able to sleep peacefully by unplugging the machine, but then I would be alone and I'll have to go away, and I don't want to. I can't!"

"I'm sorry Jason, but I have to make that call. I can't let you live alone like that," Dr. Bailey says as she starts to walk away.

"No! Please! Don't!"

I reach for her arm but she's too far away from the bed. I immediately try to get out of bed, only to feel really woozy and sick.

"Jason stay in bed! You're not fully healed of the Posion yet!" Mr. Iren says as he and Mrs. Iren usher me back to bed.

"Jason leave? He can't leave!"

I turn to the doorway and I see Sarah sticking her arms out, blocking Dr. Bailey's way.

"Sarah honey, please-"

"No! I haven't even had a chance to properly meet him! I want to become friends with him and be able to spend time with him! It's the least I can do to say thank you!"

"Honey, he can't stay by himself with his sick mother," Mr. Iren explains.

"He can come live with us!"

"Honey, you know he can't."

Sarah frowns, and bites her bottom lip, trying to hold back tears.

"Then I can take him."

Behind Sarah, Yellow appears, gently grabbing Sarah's hand and pulling her away from the doorway. Dr. Bailey, intrigued, backpedals a bit instead of walking out the room.

"Yellow. You're only 11. You can't take care of-"

"Well, yeah I understand that. But he can live with my uncle and I. My uncle is always complaining how lonely he is now that Professor Oak spends me away randomly for the Pokèdex, so he can spend time with Jason. They would both obviously have to meet each other before deciding anything, but I think will be a good match for each other, and I'll be stopping back to make sure of that."

"That, could work." Dr. Bailey says as she walks back towards my bed.

"I would still need to make a call, but it would depend on what you want Jason," she says.

"Please, Jason! Stay here with me! We can have so much fun playing together and at Professor Oak's summer camp! Please please please!"

I smile.

This choice isn't hard at all. It's a no-brainer.

"I want to stay here with Sarah," I say with a smile, as she cheers and everyone in the room smile and laugh.
