I got lost in boxes and thoughts of writing and the wedding when Viv nearly shouted to get my attention.
"Sorry, Viv. What's up?"
"Can James come over?" She impatiently asked, which made me suspicious.
"Hm, is James already here?" I asked.
"Hey, Lil," James greeted as he sheepishly entered from the hall.
"I didn't break any rules; I knew you were here," Viv began.
"It's fine. But you have to either leave your door open or hang out in the living room," I added. "Where is Jackson?"
"Went to rehearsals with Dad," Viv offered as she poked through one of my boxes and picked up an old Bob Dylan t-shirt. "Does this still fit you?"
"Yes, it does. But you can borrow it if you'd like," I added.
"Thanks," she chirped as she flung it over her shoulder.
"You're going to regret that," James warned.
"I know where she lives," I smiled.
"So does Sarah, and she put a lock on her closet," James added as Viv smacked his chest.
"How about this? You can have free rein in my closet as long as you let me know if anything gets wrecked and you're okay with me hunting through your closet for anything I'm missing," I offered.
Viv pondered, giving me access to her closet for a moment.
"And I promise not to snoop. Just look for stolen contraband," I added. "But if I find anything nefarious... yeah, you're in trouble."
Viv poked around my box for another moment before pulling out a red and white sweater and adding, "deal."
"Pleasure working with you, Viv. What are you two thinking of doing today?" I continued.
"Movie?" Viv asked James.
"Sure, but I get to pick. I'm tired of living in a black-and-white world!" He groaned. "I want to watch something blow up."
"Well, you two have fun. I'll be here, endlessly hanging far too many clothes," I grumbled.
"Let me know when you're done so I can go shopping." Viv's eyes gleamed as she looked over a few more things.
The sun was setting when my next visitor arrived.
"You didn't eat again," Billy scolded as he leaned against the doorjamb of my closet.
"But I'm so close to done," I exclaimed as I motioned to my nearly complete closet.
"You have to eat," Billy chided again.
"I know," I grumbled. "Just twenty more minutes, and I'll be done."
"No, Lil, you eat with the family now." Billy was in full dad mode.
"Fine," I whined. "Is James still here?"
"Mmhmm, found them on the couch. Did you check on them at all?" He asked.
"Um, define check..."
"So, no," Billy answered his own question.
"Were they..."
"No, of course not. But still..."
"Are you mad?" I gently prodded.
"No. I think we've done all we can do with the rules," Billy admitted. "But dinner is here, and you need to eat."
"Fine," I relented again.
"Hey," Billy coyly began as we made our way downstairs. "What do you think about Tim covering the song selections for the wedding?"
"Timmy?" My mind whirred to the hours he spent loading Billy's jukebox. "Hm, I don't hate the idea."
"He would genuinely love to do it, and he promised to take the responsibility seriously," Billy added.
"I say, let him do it," I agreed.
"Yeah?" Billy scanned my face for any reluctance.
"Yeah." I agreed. "And I think we have planned a wedding," I noted.
"I believe we have," Billy smiled as we entered the kitchen.
"Finally," James let out a breath when we answered.
"You don't live here, James," Billy reminded him.
"Doesn't mean I can't starve to death," James tossed back in a very Tim-like fashion as he dug into the pizza on the counter.
"I thought he was afraid of you," I whispered to Billy.
"Do you want to push that button?" Billy gazed down at my face. I could see the urge to flex his feared-father muscle flowing just below the surface.
"No, I don't think I do," I giggled as I let my forehead fall to his chest and felt his hand cup the back of my neck as he kissed the top of my head.
"Now, eat, Lily. It's required for life," Billy scolded once again.
"So, Jackson, how was rehearsal?" I asked as we settled around the table.
"Great, Brandon let me play with his pedal board," Jackson spilled.
"I offered to show you mine," Billy's voice came low as he tried to stamp out a whine.
"I know, Dad, but it's just cool to see someone else's," Jackson offered.
"That implies that I've walked you through mine," Billy contended as I shot him a scolding look. "But I'm glad you enjoyed seeing Brandon's," he added, mostly to appease me. "Anyway," Billy redirected. "Lily and I have an update. We're getting married!"
"Um, Dad, you already told us that." Viv's eyes knit in genuine concern.
"Well, if you'd let me finish... in two weeks!" Billy added with a smile.
"Two weeks, no. What? No? Does Tess know about this?" Viv shot.
"Tess isn't getting married. Lil and I are. And we want to get married before the tour," Billy explained.
"Are you knocked up?" Viv asked.
James gave her a hard elbow at her question, eliciting an "ouch."
"No, I'm not pregnant," I offered. "Why do people keep asking that?"
"Don't ask questions you don't want the answer to," Viv offered.
My face snapped to Billy's, who returned my gaze. "Did Viv just call me fat? I think she just called me fat!"
"I don't..." Billy began.
"No. But you two seem to spend a lot of time alone in Dad's soundproof studio," Viv contended.
Billy's face quickly snapped from mine to Viv's. "And what would you know about any of that?"
"Nothing," Viv quickly answered as her eyes grew wide. "I know nothing about what goes on in there!"
"Billy," I scolded. "There is nothing wrong with what goes on in between your dad and me."
"May I be excused before I hurl?" Jackson asked.
"Me too," Billy whispered.
"Oh, that's my mom calling," James added as he picked up his silent phone. "Hello. What? Oh, yeah, on my way home right now."
"James!" Viv cried. "Your phone didn't even ring!"
"Sorry, got to run!" James shrugged. "I'll call you later." He demurely kissed Viv on the top of the head but avoided eye contact with Billy.
"He learned that from Timmy," I whispered to Billy.
"I told you he feared me," Billy whispered back.
"Can we not have a sex talk during dinner?" Viv argued as she slumped in her chair.
"Seconded," Jackson agreed.
"Talking about healthy and consensual sexual relationships is not a sex talk," I countered.
"I side with the kids," Billy mumbled.
"See!" Viv enthusiastically popped up in her seat at her dad's support.
"Sex is nothing to be ashamed of; it is part of a healthy adult relationship. I don't want you two thinking that it's something dirty." I explained.
"And by adults, she means when you are both in your 40s," Billy added as I gave him a frustrated look. "I'm not sorry," he said to me.
"Fine, we can talk about something else," I conceded.
"So, you're getting married before the tour?" Jackson added, but there was a strain to his voice that pulled me back to his worry about his mom and dad.
"Yep, right here," Billy announced. "Planning is just about wrapped up."
Jackson nodded to himself and stared down at his half-eaten pizza.
"Why so fast?" Viv asked between bites.
"We just want to be married. It's been a long time coming." Billy lifted my hand and kissed it as he spoke.
"Do I get a dress?" Viv continued.
"Yep, assuming you are okay with being a bridesmaid?" I asked.
"Of course," Viv nonchalantly said.
I glanced at Billy and tried to stifle my smile.
"So, with Tim walking Lily down the aisle, what do you think about being my best man?" Billy asked Jackson.
"Cool," Jackson nodded.
"Since it's in just a couple of weeks, we plan to keep it small. Mostly family," I noted.
"And Brandon and Roger," Billy added.
"Just family," Jackson nodded again, but I could see the thoughts in his head.
"That reminds me, did you have time to call Sarah today?" I asked Billy.
"I didn't, but I'll give her a ring tonight," Billy absently spoke as he assessed the remaining pizza slices.
His response was what I was hoping for, that confirming Sarah could come was nothing unusual. I glanced up to see a slight smile on Jackson's face before he took a large bite of pizza to hide it.
"Roger and Brandon are free. Well, Roger is convinced he should work, but I tried to convince him otherwise," Billy continued.
"Awesome. My mom texted that Cherie and Michael can come too. I should see about hotels for them," I pondered.
"I'm pretty certain that we can find rooms for them without having to go to a hotel." Food still distracted Billy.
"Billy, we can't turn your mom's house into a bed-and-breakfast," I argued.
"I'll let you have this fight with my mom because I know what she'll want." Billy threw his hands up to absolve himself of the conversation.
"Fine, we can call her after we call Sarah," I nodded.
"Yes, dear," Billy smiled.
"No more, ma'am?" I shot at him.
"No, dear." He teased back.
