32. Back In The Game
YAS MARINA, ABU DHABI. DECEMBER 2025.
The warm Abu Dhabi sun was a welcome change from the cooler Los Angeles weather as Jake and Olivia stepped off the plane. It had been a long journey, both literally and metaphorically, to get to this point. Jake inhaled deeply, savouring the familiar scent of the desert air mixed with the excitement of the upcoming race weekend.
"This place brings back so many memories." Olivia said, slipping her hand into Jake's as they walked through the airport.
"Yeah, it's surreal to be back," Jake replied, squeezing her hand gently, "can't believe it's been half a year since I've been at a race weekend."
They made their way to the hotel, where they were greeted by the familiar faces of team members and fans. The energy was high, and Jake felt a mix of nerves and exhilaration - he was back in the world that he loved, the world that he had fought so hard to return to.
The following day was media day, and Jake found himself in a busy paddock, surrounded by reporters, photographers, and fans. Olivia stayed by his side, offering silent support as they navigated through the sea of people.
After filming some social media content for McLaren's social pages, interacting with fans and speaking to the Netflix producers of Drive to Survive, Jake kissed Olivia goodbye momentarily before walking towards the room where his interview panel was being held. He was aware of the fact he was being followed by cameras everywhere he went, it had been a long time since anyone had seen his face at a race weekend.
Jake smiled, waving as he made his way to the interview panel and took his seat on the sofa. He was sat alongside his former teammate Lando Norris, as well as Max Verstappen and Alex Albon. The friendship between the drivers was evident, and Jake felt a sense of belonging that he had missed.
The moderator kicked off the session with a question for Jake. "Welcome back, Jake. It's great to see you. How has the recovery been, and how does it feel to be back in Abu Dhabi?"
Jake leaned forward, speaking into his microphone. "Thanks. It's been a long and challenging journey, but I'm grateful to be here. The recovery process was tough, but with the support of my friends, family, and fans, I'm back feeling even better than before. It feels incredible to be back, especially in Abu Dhabi."
Lando nudged him playfully. "We missed you out there, mate. It wasn't the same without you."
Jake laughed. "I missed you guys too. Watching the races from home was torture."
Max chimed in, grinning. "Well, we're glad you're back. It's good to have some more competition on the grid."
The interviewers shifted the focus to Jake's views on returning next season. "Jake, you're set to return full-time next season. How are you preparing for that, and what are your expectations?"
"I'm focusing on getting back to my peak physical condition," Jake replied, "I've been training hard, and this weekend is a good test for me. As for expectations, I'm just looking forward to being back in the car and competing. It's where I belong."
As the panel continued, Jake chimed in with playful comments as the interviewers directed questions at the other drivers.
"He's only top of the standings because I've been out of action." Jake said cheekily, after Max was talking about how he was set to win another WDC.
A reporter then asked about his relationship with Thierry, a subject that still carried weight. "Jake, can you give us an update on your relationship with Thierry? How are things between you two? Have you moved past the incident in Austria?"
Jake paused, choosing his words carefully. "Thierry and I have been through a lot, but we're working on rebuilding our friendship. It's not something that happens overnight, but we're making progress. I think this experience has taught both of us a lot about what's really important."
The panel continued with a mix of light-hearted banter and serious questions. The friendship among the drivers was a highlight, with Alex joking about Jake's newfound fame as Olivia's boyfriend during her tour.
"It's all I saw mate," Alex laughed, "my girlfriend was showing me all these TikToks of you singing and dancing at her concerts."
Jake chuckled. "It was fun, I was happy to have the spotlight off me for a bit. She deserves every bit of success she had on that tour and more."
After the panel, Jake returned to Olivia who had listened into the panel on TV and joked about her brief mention. As they made their way through the paddock fans crowded around, eager to get a glimpse of the returning driver. Jake took the time to talk to them, signing autographs and taking pictures. Liv stood by his side, engaging with the fans and making sure everyone felt included.
"Jake, can I get a picture with you and Liv?" a young fan asked, holding up his camera.
"Of course." Jake said, pulling Liv closer. They smiled for the photo, and the fan beamed with happiness.
"It's amazing to see how much they love you." Olivia whispered as they continued walking.
"I couldn't have done it without them," Jake replied. "or without you."
As the day drew to a close, Jake felt a sense of fulfilment. He was back where he belonged, surrounded by the people who mattered most. His recovery had been long and difficult, but he had emerged stronger, ready to face whatever this challenging career decided to throw at him next.
The next day, the early morning sun cast a golden glow over the circuit as Jake stepped into the McLaren garage. The buzz of activity, the familiar scent of rubber and fuel, and the sight of the sleek cars waiting to roar to life all felt like home to him. Today was the day he had been working towards for months - his return to Formula One in the first practice session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Jake walked through the garage, exchanging nods and smiles with the team members. His heart raced with anticipation as he approached his car, which was gleaming under the bright lights. But before he got in, there was someone he needed to see.
"Rick!" Jake called out, spotting his race engineer across the garage.
Rick turned, his face breaking into a wide grin. "Jake! Good to see you, mate." They embraced warmly, clapping each other on the back. "How are you feeling?"
"A little nervous, but mostly excited," Jake admitted, "it's been too long."
Rick nodded, his eyes gleaming with pride. "We've missed you. The car's in great shape. You ready to get back out there and show them what you're made of?"
Jake grinned. "Absolutely."
As he suited up and slid into the cockpit, every movement felt like second nature. The months gone melted away, and he was back in his element. He slipped on his helmet, took a deep breath, and felt a rush of adrenaline as the engine roared to life.
"Alright, Jake," Rick's voice crackled over the radio, "let's see what you've got."
Jake eased out of the garage and onto the track. The sensation of speed, the vibrations through the car, and the sharp focus required for every turn - it all came flooding back. He was in his zone.
Lap after lap, Jake pushed the car harder, testing its limits and his own. The car felt more competitive than the last time he drove it, responding beautifully to his every command. He could feel the potential in it, envisioning it taking him to victory next season. The script was writing itself, Jake's comeback season filled with victories and maybe even a push at the World Drivers' Championship.
As the session progressed, Jake found his rhythm. The car was performing brilliantly, and he was hitting his marks with precision. The confidence surged through him, and by the end of the session, he had set the fastest time.
"Fantastic job, Jake," Rick's voice came through, filled with pride, "P1 in FP1. Welcome back buddy."
Jake couldn't help but smile. "Feels good to be back, Rick. Thanks for everything."
He brought the car back into the garage, climbing out to the cheers of his team. As he removed his helmet, he saw Olivia standing nearby, her face glowing with pride and happiness.
"That was incredible," Olivia said, wrapping her arms around him, "I'm so proud of you."
"Thank you, Liv," Jake replied, kissing her, "it felt good."
After debriefing with the team, Jake headed to the media pen for his post-practice interview. The reporters were buzzing with excitement, eager to hear from the returning driver.
"Jake, congratulations on finishing top in FP1," one reporter began, "how does it feel to be back on the track?"
Jake smiled, feeling the energy from the session still coursing through him. "It feels amazing. I've missed this so much. The car felt fantastic, and I'm just grateful to be back out there doing what I love."
"How was the recovery process for you?" another reporter asked.
"It was tough," Jake admitted, "but I had an incredible support system. My friends, family and my girlfriend, they all kept me going. And being back here today, it makes all the hard work worth it."
"Given how competitive the car feels, what are your expectations for next year?"
Jake's eyes lit up with determination. "The car feels great, and I'm feeling stronger every day. I'm aiming for victories. I believe this car has what it takes to compete at the top, and I'm ready to give it my all."
As always, a question touched on his relationship with Thierry, it seemed to be a hot topic at every press engagement he had. "Jake, we've heard about efforts to mend things with Thierry. How is that progressing? Has he messaged you about today?"
"It's a work in progress," Jake said thoughtfully, "we're taking it one step at a time, and I think we're both committed to moving forward. It's important to me to rebuild that friendship. And yes, he did send me a message right before."
The interview concluded, and Jake felt a weight lift off his shoulders. He had proven to himself and to the world that he was back, ready to take on what was next for him.
On race day, Jake and Olivia sat in the hospitality suite, watching the final laps of the race on the large screen. Max Verstappen crossed the finish line, securing another Drivers' Championship for himself and clinching the Constructors' title for Red Bull. The room erupted in applause, and Jake couldn't help but admire the achievement.
"Well, Max did it again," Jake said, turning to Liv with a smile, "another championship."
She nodded, beaming at him. "He really is something else."
After all the formalities and celebrations, Jake made his way over to the Red Bull team area, where Max was celebrating with his crew. He waited for a moment before Max noticed him and approached.
"Congratulations, Max," Jake said, extending his hand, "you were bloody rapid out there."
Max grinned, shaking his hand firmly. "Thanks, Jake. It's great to see you back."
"Appreciate it," Jake replied, "looking forward to battling it out next season."
After exchanging a few more words with Max, Jake returned to the McLaren area to congratulate his team. Despite missing out on third place in the Constructors' standings, they had shown great progress throughout the season.
"Great job, everyone," Jake said, addressing the team, "fourth place is still a solid result. Next year, we'll be even stronger."
The team members thanked him, their spirits high despite the near miss.
Later that night, Jake and Olivia arrived at an upscale club in Abu Dhabi, where the entire Formula One community had gathered to celebrate the end of the season. The place was alive with music, laughter, and the clinking of glasses as drivers, team members, and guests let loose.
Jake wore a button up white shirt with jeans whilst Olivia arrived in a short, black party dress.
The bass thumped through the floor as they entered, and the lights flashed in time with the music. Jake greeted familiar faces, making his way through the crowd with Liv by his side.
"Hey, there's Lando." Jake said, waving to his teammate.
Lando turned and broke into a wide grin. "Jake! Great to see you, mate." They hugged briefly before Lando turned his attention to Olivia. "And Olivia! Nice to see you again."
Olivia smiled warmly. "Likewise Lando, congratulations on third in the standings."
"Thanks. Don't let Jake bore you with all his racing talk," Lando joked, nudging Jake playfully, "you need to hear the real stories from me."
Jake laughed, shaking his head. "Ignore him, Liv. He's just jealous."
Jake introduced Olivia to everyone who didn't already know her, making sure she felt included and comfortable. They shared drinks, stories, and laughter with the other drivers, he had raced against a couple of these drivers before in his earlier career but due to him being slightly younger, most of the people he used to race against were still in Formula Two.
They moved through the crowd, greeting other drivers and team members. Jake caught up with Alex Albon, who was deep in conversation with George Russell.
"Jake! Welcome back," George said, giving him a firm handshake, "it's good to see you in the paddock again."
"Thanks, George. Good to be back," Jake replied, "congrats on the season."
Alex chimed in. "You were looking good in FP1 mate. Looking forward to seeing you on the grid next year."
They chatted for a while, reminiscing about past races and discussing plans for the next season. Jake made sure to include Olivia in the conversation, who was already well-versed in the world of Formula One thanks to her boyfriend.
"By the way," Alex said, turning to Olivia, "I saw your concert in Zurich, my girlfriend's a big fan. You were amazing."
Olivia blushed slightly. "Thank you, Alex. That means a lot."
As they continued to circulate, Jake introduced Olivia to more drivers and team members. They bumped into Lewis Hamilton, who greeted Jake with a smile.
"Jake! It's been too long," Lewis said, "how are you feeling?"
"Getting there, slowly but surely," Jake replied, "ready to be back in action."
Lewis nodded, then turned to Olivia. "And you must be Olivia. I've heard a lot about you."
Olivia smiled. "All good things, I hope."
"Absolutely," Lewis said with a wink, "you're a star."
As the night wore on, Jake found himself in deep conversation with other various drivers. Throughout it all, Jake kept an eye on Olivia, ensuring she was having a good time. She danced with some of the other drivers' partners and chatted with anyone who approached her, fitting in seamlessly.
After hours of partying, Jake leaned over to Olivia and whispered. "Want to get out of here?"
She nodded, her eyes sparkling with excitement. They quietly slipped out of the main room and found a secluded spot on the club's terrace. The city lights of Abu Dhabi glittered in the background as they took in the moment of peace away from the noise.
"Everyone loves you." Jake said with a smile, proud to call Liv his girlfriend.
"I hope so," Olivia said, "I want them to all like me. All the other partners are so intimidating."
"They love you, how could they not. You're everything."
Olivia blushed as they shared a tender kiss, the energy of the evening still buzzing around them. One thing led to another, and the passion started intensifying.
"Let's go back to our room." Jake said, his breathing heavy as he stopped mid-kiss.
They returned to their hotel room, their lust and passion taking over. As the night came to a close, they lay entwined, the exhaustion of the day finally catching up to them.
"Next season is going to be our season." Jake said softly, his shirt off and his arm around Olivia.
Olivia smiled, her eyes closing. "I believe it, Jake. And I'll be there with you every step of the way."
With that, they drifted off to sleep, their dreams filled with the promise of new beginnings and the unbreakable bond they shared.
