17. The Rookie Season Of Dreams
Rookie Sensation: Jacob Thompson's Impressive Debut in Formula 1
Jake Thompson's entry into Formula 1 has been nothing short of remarkable. Nine races into his rookie season, the young driver has showcased a blend of skill, consistency, and resilience, making a strong case for himself as a future star in the sport. With a competitive car beneath him, Thompson has consistently scored points and has even clinched his first podium in front of his home crowd.
Thompson's journey began in Bahrain, where he immediately made his presence felt by finishing fifth. It was a statement of intent from the rookie, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level against seasoned veterans. Moving to Jeddah, the young driver successfully manoeuvred the narrow circuit to secure another finish in fifth place.
The highlight of Thompson's season so far came in Australia, his home race. In front of a jubilant crowd, he secured his first-ever podium finish, taking third place - the atmosphere electric as the local hero stepped onto the podium.
Thompson's momentum didn't wane as the season moved to Japan, where he finished sixth, and China, where he claimed another fifth place. His ability to consistently score points highlighted has highlighted both the competitiveness of the McLaren car and their strategy - as well as Jacob's ability as a driver.
The Miami Grand Prix saw Thompson narrowly miss out on another podium, finishing fourth. Despite the near miss, his performance was yet another showcase of his remarkable talent and determination.
However, the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix brought the first major setback of his season. After an intense battle on track, Thompson's race ended in disappointment when Lance Stroll collided with him, forcing a DNF. His post-race interview reflected his frustration, but also his focus on bouncing back stronger.
"It was tough to take, especially when I've been consistently getting points all season. It's just one of those things you can't control, you just have to take it on the chin."
Thompson rebounded with solid performances in Monaco and Canada, finishing sixth and fifth respectively.
Nine races into the 24-race calendar, Jake Thompson has proven that he belongs in Formula 1. His consistent point-scoring finishes, including a podium, position him well in the championship standings and have earned him the respect of the paddock. With a competitive car and a clear talent for racing, Thompson's future looks bright. He has silenced all critics who were uncertain that he was ready but despite his youth, he is already competing with all the seasoned professionals.
For Thompson's childhood friend and other rookie on the grid, the season has not gone easily as it has for Jake. With the Sauber car, Thierry Arquette, despite high hopes and his undeniable talent, has started his first season marred by difficulties.
Early races were plagued by mechanical issues and unfortunate incidents, preventing him from scoring points. Despite showing flashes of speed and skill, Arquette has often found himself outside the top ten, battling with a car that struggles to match the pace of the front-runners.
The turning point came at the Chinese Grand Prix, where Arquette finally scored his first points of the season. Finishing in the top ten, he managed to secure valuable points for his team, boosting his confidence and morale. With races following resulting in no points for the Monegasque, in Canada he demonstrated his talent by securing another tenth-place finish, earning another crucial point for Kick Sauber.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on both rookies to see if one can continue his impressive form and potentially secure a maiden victory and whether the other can shine in a car not as competitive as the rest.
SILVERSTONE, UNITED KINGDOM. JULY 2024.
With consistent P5 and P6 finishes in Spain and Austria, part of Jake was hoping that he could achieve his second podium in what he also considered to be his home country. Silverstone marked the halfway point in the season and it meant only two more races before the summer break. Jake would be lying if he said he didn't desperately need the time off. Although he loved his career and it was his dream, it was still exhausting nonetheless.
Silverstone also meant that Olivia's tour was coming to the end and although she was sad that such a surreal experience was ending, she would definitely welcome the time off. Again, she loved her career but it was still exhausting travelling and performing - even with a short set in comparison to the big-name artists.
It seemed like fate that they were both in the same country and could attend each other's events. Olivia had two sold out shows in London at the Eventim Apollo on Wednesday and Thursday evening meaning she would be able to join Jake for his race weekend and Jake could go see her.
It was an hour and a half drive between Silverstone Circuit so after his commitments on Thursday, Jake was planning to make it to London to see Olivia's final shows and bring her back up with him for the British Grand Prix.
The plan was for Olivia to go back to LA after the weekend for a much needed break, it would have been selfish of Jacob to ask her to accompany her for the rest of his season, he understood the toll the tour had on his girlfriend and was an advocate for her going back home for some much needed relaxation.
Jake had told her that during the month break the drivers had for summer, he would come to LA to spend time with her. Olivia then said she wanted to join Jake for his season, meaning she would travel with him to Netherlands, Italy, Azerbaijan, Singapore before coming back to the States for a race. The two had then planned for Olivia to stay in LA whilst Jake raced in Mexico and Brazil before meeting up again in Vegas.
It was all complicated and if it was up to both of them they would see each other all the time but their careers called and they also had to prioritise themselves and their well-being sometimes.
He was currently waiting at Olivia's hotel in London, awaiting her return from the venue. Just before she arrived home he had been on call with Sophie congratulating her on her Juilliard graduation. It was incredibly
impressive how she was able to balance her studies with her busy career and still
come out of it with a diploma - it truly showed how hard working the Phoenix girl was. Jake was upset that he couldn't make it due to Silverstone but Jax (who attended) made sure to take lots
of videos and photos and post it onto their groupchat.
It didn't take Olivia long to return and they reunited in the hotel lobby, greeting each other with a warm hug and a gentle kiss.
"How are you doing?" Jake asked his girlfriend as they were perched on the end of Olivia's bed.
Olivia nodded. "I'm doing alright, I'm sad the tour is ending."
"I bet you're glad for a bit of time off though." Jacob added with a laugh.
"For sure, I could do with some time off before my next album."
"When are you planning on releasing that?"
"If it was up to my manager he'd announce the album and tour at the end of the year and go on tour early next year."
Jacob raised his eyebrows. "That's way too soon! You'll barely get any time off."
"He said I'd have over half a year, he'd want me to go from February to August."
Jacob disapproved. "You think you're going to do it?"
"I'm not sure," Olivia sighed, "I mean the album is basically done, I had most of the songs already written, it's more about just recording most of it. He'd want me to announce it in January along with a tour."
Jacob was conflicted. "If it's truly what you want, I'll support you no matter what."
Olivia rested her head on Jake's shoulder. "I think so, I think it what I need to establish myself."
"What do you mean? You're one of the biggest rising pop stars already!" Jacob responded.
"I don't know, I don't want to be one of those artists who release one good album and then disappear and by the time my next album comes out no one even wants to listen to me anymore."
"That's never going to happen Liv."
She sighed. "I think I'm going to do it, I want to do it. I love music, I love singing, it's my life."
Jacob nodded in understanding. "I support you, I'm excited for your next album."
There was a mischievous look in her eyes. "You should be."
"Why?" Jacob asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No reason..." she trailed off and quickly changed the subject, "I think I'll have it all done and out in January and we can start the tour in February. There was a lot of demand for this tour so I think I can go to bigger and more venues."
The tour would be Olivia's first arena tour and he knew it was a dream of Olivia's for a stadium tour, the time wasn't here yet but he had no doubt one day she would be touring stadiums and arenas already was a massive step up. In just two years her popularity had skyrocketed, she was the next big pop star.
"So you're going to record it when you go back after this weekend?"
"I'll probably have some time off, maybe during that time in between the two races in America, most of them are ready to go I think."
The time passed and soon Jacob was in the wings of the Eventim Apollo, watching Olivia walk on stage for the penultimate time.
Jacob watched in awe as Olivia performed hit after hit, her energy and passion mesmerising her audience.
As the concert came to a close, Olivia took a final bow, the applause and cheers nearly deafening. She waved to the crowd, blowing kisses and thanking everyone for their incredible support.
Backstage, Jacob waited for her, a proud smile on his face. When she finally appeared, he wrapped her in a tight hug. "You were amazing, Liv. Absolutely amazing."
As much as Jacob wanted to stay and celebrate, his duties at Silverstone awaited. After a quick dinner with Olivia and her team, he bid her a temporary farewell and headed back to Silverstone, arriving after midnight. Thursday was a busy day, filled with team meetings and media obligations.
After a full day of preparation at Silverstone, Jacob drove back to London. He arrived just in time for the show to start, finding his usual spot in the wings. She glanced over and a smile emerged on her face when she realised he had made it.
The final concert of her tour was incredible. Jacob felt so lucky that he could witness this monumental occasion. The crowd were on their feet, singing along and cheering her on. Jacob watched with immense pride, knowing that she was ending her tour on a high note.
After the concert, they went out for a celebratory dinner at an upscale restaurant in the heart of London. They laughed and reminisced about the tour, Liv telling him all the ups and downs whilst she was away.
Later that night, they drove back to Silverstone together. The road was quiet, and the countryside was bathed in the soft glow of moonlight. Olivia reached over and placed her hand on Jake's which was currently on the gearstick.
The following morning, they arrived in the paddock together. This was the first time she was going to watch from the garage and not from a hospitality suite. He introduced her to everyone as his girlfriend, McLaren were like family to him and they respected his privacy and wouldn't leak it anywhere.
The practice sessions went smoothly, with Jacob consistently posting competitive times. Olivia watched intently from the garage, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the thrill of being so close to the action.
Saturday's qualifying session brought its own set of challenges. In Q1, Jacob faced a technical fault that left him with time for only one flying lap. The tension in the garage was there as he took to the track, but Jacob remained calm and focused. He pushed his McLaren to the limit, setting a time just good enough to advance to Q2.
Olivia watched with bated breath, her heart pounding as the seconds ticked by. When Jacob's time appeared on the screen, she let out a sigh of relief, her hands shaking from the adrenaline.
Q2 and Q3 went more smoothly, and Jacob ultimately secured a sixth-place start for the race.
After qualifying, Jacob and Thierry found a quiet corner to talk. Thierry gave Jacob a friendly punch on the arm. "Nice job out there, man. You had us all on the edge of our seats."
Thierry had qualified P15 and at the time was in the garage.
Jacob laughed. "Tell me about it. That technical fault had me sweating, but we pulled through."
Thierry nodded, his expression serious. "Just remember to stay focused tomorrow. Silverstone's a tricky track."
"Thanks, Thierry. I'll do my best. And good luck to you too. Let's both bring home some points."
Sunday dawned bright and clear, the perfect day for racing. The atmosphere at Silverstone was electric, with fans packing the stands and the paddock buzzing with activity. Liv stood beside Jacob as he prepared for the race, giving him a reassuring smile.
"Good luck, Jake. I know you're going to do great."
"Thanks, Liv," he said, squeezing her hand, "I'll see you after the race."
As the cars lined up on the grid, the tension was almost unbearable. The lights went out, and the race began with a chaotic first turn. Several cars were wiped out in a flurry of carbon fibre and tyre smoke, but Jacob managed to navigate through the carnage unscathed, settling into a steady rhythm.
As the race progressed, Jacob found himself benefiting from a series of fortunate safety car deployments. His team executed a flawless strategy, keeping him out longer than his rivals and allowing him to lead the race for several laps before his final pit stop.
"We want you to box now Jacob," Rick said from the radio, "box this lap."
Jacob knew it was the right call, any longer on these tyres and he would be at risk of losing the gap he had formed with the drivers behind him. Pitting now would hopefully make him re-join third, a podium he would definitely savour. The final laps were intense, with Jacob defending his position fiercely. Thanks to the brilliant strategy and his skillful driving, he managed to hold on and clinch third place, securing his second podium of the season.
As Jacob crossed the finish line, the McLaren garage erupted in cheers. Olivia, overwhelmed with emotion, rushed to join the team. Jacob parked his car in Parc Fermé and climbed out, greeted by a roar from the crowd.
He made his way through the throngs of team members and journalists to find Olivia waiting for him, her face glowing with pride. Without a second thought, he swept her into his arms, spinning her around in a joyous embrace.
"You did it, Jake!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. "I'm so proud of you!"
"Thank you Liv, thank you for everything."
The evenings were filled with celebration, tomorrow afternoon Liv was flying back to LA so Jacob was making the most of the time he had with her in person. When the day ended with his girlfriend lying on his chest fast asleep after securing a second podium in his rookie season, he couldn't have felt happier.
