Chapter 21 - Safe
POV: Grian
Location: Mumbo's base
I let out a tired sigh and ran my hand through my hair. I was sitting beside Mumbo's bedside and I was beginning to get worried. He had been unconscious for a week and it didn't seem like he was getting better. Not even Stress knew what to do.
I looked up as EX flew in, stumbling as he landed. He came over, worry in his voice as he said, "How is he?" I shook my head in reply, looking away from him and leaning over in the chair.
The sun had barely set and the sky was darkening. I knew someone was going to come to take my shift but I didn't know who or when they would come.
EX looked at Mumbo. "What have I done...?" he whispered, his hidden gaze filled with worry and fear.
We looked up as the sound of rockets filled the air. Xisuma flew in with Stress just behind him. "How is he?" Xisuma asked as he walked over. I shook my head in reply, too tired to speak.
Stress dashed over, concern in her eyes. However, instead of stopping by Mumbo, she came right over to me. She grabbed my face and lifted it up, examining the dark bags under my eyes. "Grian, when was the last time you slept?" she asked after she let go. I rubbed my face and looked away. "Last night," I answered. She sighed. "Better question, how long did you sleep last?" Stress continued. "Three hours," I mumbled reluctantly. She sighed. "You really need to try and sleep more," she said.
I looked up at her while raising my eyebrow. "How long did you sleep last?" I asked. She glanced away uncomfortably. "Around 6 hours," she answered. I let out a sigh and looked away.
"We really need to get more sleep," Xisuma said, his arms crossed. EX nodded a little bit. I figured he probably would've chuckled if he wasn't so tired.
I stood up and walked over to the window, looking outside at the night sky. I hugged myself, my red sweater engulfing me.
EX and Xisuma came over to me, worry in their eyes. "Are you sure you're okay?" Xisuma asked. I didn't reply.
Stress came over and gave me a backward hug. I didn't react.
While our backs were turned, a loud gasp sounded behind us. We turned to see Mumbo sitting up, his eyes glowing red. "Mumbo!" I exclaimed, running over.
He shook his head, his eyes shut. The glow faded and he looked at me with worried green eyes. "Grian...?" he said slowly. His gaze slowly moved around the room, his brain slowly taking everything in.
Stress ran over to him. "How are you?" she asked, worry filling her voice and eyes. Mumbo looked down and realized where he was. "What happened?" he asked slowly, his eyes half-closed wearily. "You were possessed and you couldn't take it," Xisuma said quietly, walking over.
That was when Mumbo noticed EX standing awkwardly by the window. He pushed himself backward on the bed, his eyes wide. EX looked away, grabbing himself and hugging himself.
"I'm sorry," EX quietly said to Mumbo's surprise. "You-You're sorry?" Mumbo said in confusion. He nodded, not looking at him. "I didn't mean to hurt you," EX said quietly. Mumbo looked away, feeling confused.
Stress pushed Mumbo down onto the bed. "You need rest," she stated. "You may have just woken up but you still need to sleep." Mumbo shook his head and tried to sit up, but she stopped him.
I stood awkwardly at his bedside, tears forming in my eyes as I hung my head.
Mumbo looked over at me and realized how tired I looked. "If Grian goes to sleep, I will too," he promised. I chuckled slightly. "Fine," I said. "Fine," he echoed with a smirk.
Stress smiled. "Glad that's sorted," she said as he stopped fighting to get up.
Xisuma glanced back at EX, who didn't meet his gaze. "You okay, EX?" he asked.
He nodded after a moment of hesitation that allowed Xisuma to tell he wasn't.
"What is it?" he asked quietly, walking over to him.
"I'm fine, " he insisted through gritted teeth.
Xisuma took a step back, slight fear entering his gaze. "Alright, " he replied before turning back to Mumbo.
A wave of exhaustion washed over me, making me slouch a bit where I stood.
I let out a yawn. "I'm going to go home to sleep, " I said, equipping my elytra and heading over to the exit.
Stress followed me. "You are not flying home, " she stated. I looked at her, confusion in my tired eyes.
"My home isn't that far away, " I replied quietly.
"And you're about to fall asleep on your feet. EX, you are going to take him home through the nether, " she ordered.
He looked over at his when he was spoken to. "Alright, " he answered.
I reluctantly walked over to him and we went to Mumbo's nether portal.
I glanced back before we went through. Mumbo met my gaze with a reassuring smile.
"Sleep well, " he called.
"Night, " I replied with a small smile.
EX went through the portal and I quickly followed him.
Once in the nether hub, we went to my portal and went inside.
We entered my base and immediately went to our beds. I collapsed on my bed with a drawn-out content sigh. EX chuckled as he pulled off his helmet and laid down.
"Night, " he called.
"Goodnight, " I replied.
I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
I blinked my eyes wearily as my communicator beeped. I reluctantly pulled it in front of my face to read.
Xisuma: It has been decided. In 2 days, we will be updating to 1.14. We have been holding off on this update because Mumbo has been unconscious. However, he woke up last night and is swiftly recovering. I am giving him 2 more days to mostly recover before we go update.
I smiled as I reached the end. Xisuma cared about everyone.
EX sleepily rolled over and looked at me with tired eyes. "What is it?" He asked.
I lowered my communicator and looked at him. "We're updating to 1.14 in 2 days," I answered.
He nodded tiredly and rolled back over, clearly attempting to go back to sleep.
I let out a yelp as three people flew into my base and started attempting to wake us up.
"Rise and shine!" One with pale blonde hair said.
"You ain't sleeping no more!" the one with brown hair said with a grin.
"Xisuma told us to wake you up," the one with yellow blonde hair and red eyes said.
I chuckled as EX just grumbled and pulled the covers over his head.
I watched as Zedaph snuck over and poked him in the arm while saying "Poke!", making him yelp and jump out of bed. "Hey!" he exclaimed. Zedaph giggled and ran over to hide behind Impulse. Impulse laughed and moved away while saying, "I'm not hiding you."
Tango cleared his throat, a smile on his face. "Don't mind them, they had less sleep last night and they are currently slap-happy," he said.
I chuckled again and got out of bed.
I walked over to EX and practically dragged him out of bed.
With a quiet snarl, he picked up his helmet and put it over his white hair.
Zedaph cocked his head. "Why is your hair white and black?" He asked, genuinely curious.
EX shrugged. "I had to dye it black for a while but it grew back out as white," he answered, hoping the questions were over with.
"Does Xisuma have white hair?"
EX shook his head. "No, he doesn't."
"How are you twins?"
He answered with a shrug, "We were born at the same time?"
Zedaph nodded, understanding finally.
"Have you seen his face?" He asked.
EX raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, we're brothers after all," he answered.
Tango cleared his throat to catch his slap-happy friend's attention. "Thank you, Zed," he said with a smirk.
He turned back to me. "Xisuma wants to talk to you two," he said. "He's at Mumbo's base with Stress."
I nodded. "Thanks," I said.
Impulse reached over and stopped Zedaph from running over to EX. "Impy!" Zed exclaimed. "I wanna hug him! He needs loveee." Impulse laughed. "Maybe leave the hugging for Grian and Xisuma," he replied. Zedaph stopped fighting and hung a bit. "Fine..." he said reluctantly.
Impulse hesitantly stopped pulling Zedaph back and the optimistic hermit just stood there with his mouth in a line.
I chuckled again then looked back at Tango. "Thanks. We'll head there soon," I said. He smiled and nodded.
"Come on," he said to Impulse and Zedaph. "Let's get you two some more sleep."
As they left, Zedaph complained, "Tangy! I'm not tired!" Tango countered with a "You're going to sleep," and he fell silent, a pout likely on his face.
"Sleep well!" I called with a laugh.
The three of them flew out of the base, leaving me and EX alone.
"Grian," EX began.
"Yeah?"
"Why'd you think they weren't scared of me?" He asked, rubbing his wrist.
I thought about it for a moment. "Well, they've had a while to get used to the idea of you not being evil," I answered. "And Zedaph and Impulse were slap-happy, soooo," I trailed off with my hands up in an I-don't-know position.
He chuckled. "Yeah, you're right. Come on, let's go to Mumbo's base," he said, equipping his elytra and pulling out rockets. I smiled and did the same.
"Wanna race?" I said with a wide grin. He chuckled and nodded. "You're on!" He exclaimed.
We raced to Mumbo's base, wasting a few rockets in the process. Okay, it was a lot more than a few.
I let out a yell of triumph as I landed first. "Aw man! You tripped me up! I thought you were falling!" EX said as he landed behind me, amusement in his voice.
I chuckled. "That's why I flew toward the water!" I replied with a grin.
I cleared my throat as Xisuma came around the corner, amusement in his eyes.
"Hallo, having fun?" He asked. I chuckled and nodded.
"Come on, let's go talk," he said, dampening the mood a bit.
I reluctantly followed him to Mumbo's room.
I saw Mumbo sitting on a chair next to Stress. Xisuma went over to sit beside Stress, leaving three chairs open.
"Who else is coming?" I asked just as a voice rang through the build, answering my question.
"Hello?" Iskall called.
EX went over to him and purposely remained quiet so that when he popped out from around the corner, Iskall let out a surprised yelp. I heard EX laughing and the two of them came to join us.
I sat beside Mumbo and Iskall came to sit by me. Moments later, EX casually dragged the chair that was by Iskall over to Xisuma and sat down.
"So, why are we here?" I asked, looking at Xisuma.
He remained quiet for a few moments. "I wanted to discuss something with you guys," he said. EX stiffened, apparently knowing what he was talking about.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" EX asked quietly.
Xisuma met his twin's gaze and nodded.
Looking back at us, he continued, "I recently went to an admin meeting. The Prime Admin warned us to watch out for someone with great power." He paused for a moment, trying to decide what to say. "Over 6 years ago, the Third Prime Admin went missing. Prime Admin Myriel has reason to believe that he was forced to become a Watcher." Silence fell over the room.
My eyes widened slightly as memories from before Evo flowed through my mind. Moments later they vanished as quickly as they came, leaving me dazed and confused.
"What are we supposed to do?" Stress asked, breaking through my thoughts.
Xisuma met her gaze. "We need to keep an eye out for anyone that fits the description. He likely came out of the Academy recently," he said.
"What's a Watcher?" Iskall asked.
"A player with magic and the ability to protect servers from large glitches," EX replied. Everyone's gaze snapped to look at him, but he didn't shrink back.
"EX," Xisuma said.
"It's fine. You know and you're the admin," he replied.
Xisuma fell silent.
EX turned back to the others. "Watchers train to improve their raw capability for magic and after they train for around 6 years, they either remain at the Watcher Academy to teach, or they go to a server to watch over it," he explained.
"And how exactly do you know this?" Mumbo asked.
EX met his gaze. When he spoke again, his voice was quiet; "I was forced to become a Watcher."
Mumbo fell silent and didn't say anything more.
EX looked at me and I knew what he wanted me to do.
"Why would you come back after 6 years and not tell me about what happened to you?" I asked quietly, allowing my voice to show sorrow and a feeling of being betrayed.
"I'm sorry, Grian. I was forced into silence," he replied quietly.
Xisuma and Stress exchanged a glance, being the only ones who knew the truth.
Mumbo placed a hand on my shoulder in an attempt to comfort me. I gently pushed his hand off and hugged myself, not looking at anyone.
In reality, I wasn't faking. I was confused and sad that I couldn't figure out why my memories of my past had been stolen. I felt betrayed that the Watchers had done this to me. Most of all, I just wanted to run and hide in fear of being found out by Xisuma. However, I remained in my seat and let the discussion finish.
"I just want you guys to keep an eye out," Xisuma finished.
Iskall and Mumbo reluctantly agreed to do that. Stress followed and I murmured a confirmation.
"Meeting adjourned," Xisuma said before standing.
Iskall and Stress stood too and headed for the door, glancing back at me with worry in their eyes. Xisuma followed them. EX stood and walked over to me. I stood and headed out the door, rocketing off on elytra wings past Stress, Iskall, and Xisuma. EX watched me go for a moment before quickly following.
Stress and Xisuma exchanged glances and Stress flew off after us.
I landed gracefully inside my base and immediately took off again to go up through the levels of my base. I stopped in the one filled with nature. I sat down beside my parrot and it hopped onto my shoulder.
I heard rockets inside of my base and watched as EX flew in with Stress close behind him.
"Why'd you fly off?" EX asked.
I looked away and didn't reply.
Stress kneeled beside me, worry showing in her deep brown eyes. "What's wrong Grian?" she asked quietly.
I sighed and answered quietly, "I can't remember who I am..."
Stress froze and went to meet EX's gaze, her eyes wide.
She looked back at me.
"How much magic do you have?"
