Rita Lawrence is the the daughter of Johnny Lawrence, the former karate champion, who quit karate and try to let go of the past since 1984. Rita has been live with her father for almost ten years ever since her mother, Gloria Rodrigo, died from a terrible accident when she was four years old, and Rita moved in with her father. Rita has a great talent of singing and dancing from her mother, but she learn a bit of karate from her father to defend herself from bullies.

Rita has a great relationship with her father, but has a strong sibling relationship with her half-brother, Robby Keene. But his relationship with Johnny has been strained since he was never there for him since he was born, and his mother Shannon Keene tells him false things about Johnny. Even thought they don't live together, Rita and Robby loved each other, and they keep each other company whenever their parents are not around. Rita's best friends with Eli Moskowitz, Demetri, and Luna Cooper since they were in kindergarten, and they've been inseparable.

Rita thought her life will just be simple, until one day Miguel Diaz move next door to her, and became great friends as they first met. Then Johnny decided to open up a karate dojo and name it Cobra Kai, and help train Miguel karate after saving him and Rita from bullies, and as they got better, Rita's friends start to take an interest and learn karate as well. As they learn karate, Rita will soon realize that she will have to stay confident as her father's past comes back to haunt them and must stay strong.
