Research at the Library
The next morning on the way to Emm's I stopped and picked up some breakfast biscuits at Burger King. I got enough for us both but when I got to her place and she let me in her Uncle was there. He was sitting on the couch hung over half asleep and smelling like a bar. That must of been where he spent the night, I don't know.
Emm grabbed her hoodie off the back of the couch and pulled me to the door. "Come on" she told me, "Now is not a good time to hang here, lets go."
"Where are we going" I asked her.
"To the library of course" she said as she dragged me towards my motorcycle, "I thought you wanted to find Blake."
When we got to the library we sat on a bench out front and ate the biscuits I had brought. From the way Emm wolfed them down I guessed that it had been a while since she had eaten. "Hey" I told her, "slow down. They won't run away from you, I promise". I dug in the other sack to get her a coffee and got one for myself.
"Its black" I told her, "I didn't know if you even like coffee or how you would take it. Cream and sugar is in the bag if you want."
"It's fine" she thanked me, "I hardly ever get coffee. For me any flavor is a treat."
"Nectar of the Gods!" I smiled. We finished breakfast in no time and then sat sipping our coffee quietly.
"What are we here to find?" I asked her after a few minutes, "What is it we are looking for?"
"I told you last night" she smiled at me brightly, "I don't trust you. At least not yet, so that is for me to know and for us to follow the trail to your boy."
I knew better than to argue with her about it. She had convinced me the night before that without her my odds of finding Blake were slim to none. I kept my mouth shut and sat next to her enjoying the sunshine.
When we were finished with our drinks and thrown away our trash Emm led the way into the Library.
"Good morning Ms. Krantz" she greeted the Librarian, "How are you this morning?"
Ms Krantz was the same sour woman I had met here the day before. Now however, on seeing Emm she became much warmer and even happy to help. I guess you have to be a regular to be appreciated, I don't know. I assumed Emm must here a lot. She knew the Librarian and the Librarian knew her. They appeared to be on good terms.
"Good morning Emm" Ms Krantz returned the greeting, "What are you up to today dear?"
"My friend has a research paper due soon and I'm going to help her with it" Emm smiled.
"I guess you will need the key to the computer room?" Ms Krantz asked eying me.
"Yes please" Emm said as the took the offered key from the Librarians outstretched hand.
Emm led the way to the back of the Library to a locked door, used the key to enter and then switched the light on. Inside there were rows of brand new looking modern state of the art computers. Emm sat at the nearest of them and switched it on. I sat next to her to watch.
"Oh no you don't" Emm looked at me with a lifted eyebrow.
I had to smile. "What?" I asked her.
"You" she pointed to a chair at the front of the room, "Sit over there where you can't see what I'm doing."
Reluctantly I got up and took the seat she had pointed at, crossed my arms and tried not to pout. I watched as she worked the keys and after a few minutes she pulled a piece of paper from inside that black hoodie of hers and took some notes with a stub of a pencil.
"Got her!" she exclaimed her face beaming.
"Her?" I inquired, "Who her? We are looking for Blake. You aren't dragging me off on some wild chase after an old girlfriend are you?"
"No" Emm answered, "The girl is the one your Blake is with. I told you about her last night."
"Oh" I said remembering our conversation, "that girl, yeah, okay. The one he ran off with."
"He wouldn't be anywhere but with her. If it wasn't for her you wouldn't be looking for him" she looked at me with a serious expression , "and if he wasn't with her you would have found him already."
"What makes her so easy to find?" I asked as I gave her my most intimidating stare. I was curious. More was going on here than Emm was telling me. Something important. I wanted to know what it was.
"I won't tell you" Emm met my stare with her own, "and I want you to make me a promise."
I sighed. This girl was stubborn. I thought it over because I had an idea what it was that she wanted to extract as a promise from me and I wasn't happy with the idea. Not happy at all. Not even a little.
"Okay" I said, "Let me hear it and we will see."
"When we find them" Emm told me, "You have to promise you will leave her alone. You have to promise you won't hurt her and that she won't be harmed no matter what."
I thought it over. I had known that it was coming, that that is what she would ask. I didn't like it. What if this girl was demon as well? What if she got in the way and the only way I could get to Blake was to go through her?
"Are you in love with this girl?" I asked.
Emm blushed. It was cute. Emo and goth girls are cute anyway and Emm was cuter than most. She looked quickly away, then stared at her ragged tennis shoes a moment before she looked up and met my eyes with her own.
"Yes" she told me boldly, "Is that a problem for you?"
"I don't know yet" I told her honestly, "I hope not. Can't you tell me more about her?"
"No!" Emm answered emphatically.
I didn't know enough to tell her what she wanted to hear, so I lied. I know that sounds wrong. I'm supposed to be one of the good guys right? The peeps that wear the white hats aren't supposed to lie.
"Okay" I told her reluctantly, "You got yourself a deal. She won't be harmed. Not by me anyway." Mentally I was crossing my fingers. I don't like to lie.
"If this Blake thing goes wrong you have to protect her" Emm said, "I don't want her harmed in anyway. Not by anyone."
"All right all right" I grumbled, "You have my promise." I knew my promise was worth nothing but I hoped sincerely that I could keep it anyway. I liked this girl with her fierce loyalty and her stubborn determination. I hoped the girl she was looking for would appreciate her when and if we found her.
"Okay" I said, "Where are we going next?"
"To my house first, I need to pack some stuff" she said, "and after I have what I need and we are on the road I will let you know where we are going."
This girl was careful. It was obvious that she didn't trust me. She shouldn't. In her place I would be the same.
"Agreed" I shrugged and followed as she turned off the computer, turned out the light and returned the key to the Ms. Krantz the Librarian.
We stopped at her place. Emm left me sitting outside and emerged a few minutes later with a small pack slung over one shoulder. I could see she had changed clothes. Her Hoodie had disappeared to be replaced by a T shirt, black of course and a baseball cap, also black.
I helped her strap her pack to mine on the back of the bike and we rode off towards the main highway. She didn't look back even once which kind of surprised me.
Just like the night before she gave me directions by tugging on my shirt to let me know which direction and soon we were on our way out of town. We rode an hour or two and I stopped at a roadside burger stand to give us a chance to get something to drink and stretch our legs. I handed Emm a cold coke and sat back on the bike waiting for her to work the rest of the kinks out. She wasn't used to riding like I was.
"Well" I asked her, "Are you going to tell me where we are going?"
"Gainesville" she said.
I picked up my GPS and plugged in the destination. It thought it over a moment, pinged at me and spit out the directions.
"Lets go" I told her.
Emm climbed on behind me as I kicked the bike to life and we were off. What we would find in Gainesville I had no clue but I hoped it was my demon and for Emms sake I hoped the girl was there as well.
