thirty-nine
The apartment wasn't the bachelor style fortress she'd been expecting.
The walls were viridian and the decor minimal yet colourful. It looked all put together, like Mikhail's life now.
"Nice place you got." Nila said to break the ice.
"Thanks, my fiance chose everything." Mikhail said.
Fiance. The word brought up a whirl of jealousy and discomfort within her.
"She's got good taste. Have you set a date?" She said.
"This isn't why you came here."
It was a cold, factual statement. And it was the truth.
She planned on thanking him and getting some answers, or at least an explanations for all that they shared.
Yet now that she was here, she had no idea what questions to ask anymore.
"You're right, it isn't." Nila nodded.
They sat on the yellow couch in the dining room, both at each end of it, putting plenty of space in between.
She let out a sigh to compose herself before speaking again.
"I wanted to thank you, for, umm, being there at the hospital despite your family's-erm-"
"Lack of presence? Disapproval?" He filled in, helpfully.
She awkardly nodded.
"I had to. Be there I mean."
"No you-"
"I did." Mikhail insisted. "Or I'd been stooping to my brother's level. He was an asshole, and I supported your decision to call off the marriage."
Part of her was glad that Mikhail wasn't a homophobe like Amjad, but she was also disappointed that there weren't any deeper reasons for his kindness.
Deciding that this may be her last chance to clear everything, she braved herself.
"So you don't have feelings for me anymore?"
♧
Almost near the end guys.
