Not Enough
A/N: Due to popular demand, I am making this into a short story. I got a lot of positive feedback on this on my AO3 account so of course, I got to upload it here as well. It's going to be angsty and you're still she/her, vagina owner reader. P.S Kyoujuro lives because my heart can't.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sex was great. It was. It was exactly what you've been craving for the last three months. However, it was not enough. It was nowhere near enough to make up for what he did. What they all did the last three months. Three full moon cycles. Weeks. Your heart and brain were fighting with each other. Your heart was telling you that it is okay, you told them how you feel, give them a chance. They will fix it all. Your brain? It was a whole different story. Your brain was at constant war with your want. Make them hurt. Why should you be so lenient? They never noticed until you said something. Why do you have to say something? Why did they never notice you were not included in anything? Only one thing you received out of the numerous other things you need to feel and be better. It was not enough.
"Should we wake them up?" That was Suma trying to whisper. She failed. You knew Tengen was awake and, he knew you were awake. You both pretended to be asleep.
"Well, we didn't finish cooking yet. No need to wake them up." That was Hina the ever-so-present one. Normally her voice soothed you but, right now it bunched up your nerves into a nasty knot. You subtly smelled the air only to frown. It was fucking stew. That damn meat stew they all loved but, you. Your face was facing away from them so they didn't see the frown.
"I'm annoyed with waiting, she's been laying on him too long." Before Makio can make a move you sat straight up turning to glare at Makio. At least she had the decency to look ashamed at what came out of her mouth.
"No need I'll get off your fucking husband." You got up, ignoring the disappointed looks thrown at Makio, and grabbed your stuff heading to the bathroom for a bath. You ignored the voices behind you needing to wash off last night's activities. You felt amazing last night but, now? You felt used. You didn't feel loved like a wife. You feel like a mistress that nagged for not getting attention and then got caught. It was a nasty feeling. You locked the door behind you, setting the water to almost scalding and, scrubbing your skin almost raw. Why did Makio say that? Did anything you said yesterday mean anything? Did they even want you in this marriage? Were they just complacent with you because that's what Tengen wanted? Does Tengen even love you anymore?
"Y/N?" You ignored Hina at the door. You were tired of that too. She would always make Makio or Tengen apologize since they both were so headstrong but, you were tired of that. You were tired of forced apologies. If it didn't come naturally that means they saw nothing wrong with their words and actions.
"If you came here to apologize for Makio, don't Hinatsuru. Let her do it if she wants which I doubt." You heard her sigh before walking away. Fuck the pet names. They didn't deserve the pet names. You felt like screaming about how disappointed and angry you were. Did anything you said yesterday mean something? Or did it just go through one ear out the other with them? You made it very clear how you felt and, they still dared to act like this? You regret letting Tengen have sex with you. Even if it was what you wanted. That shouldn't have been so easy. You are being too lenient. You finished scrubbing your body before exiting. You were still peeved.
"You smell good Y/N-Chan!" It was Suma. You looked at her and, she was still clinging onto Tengen like she always does. Whatever. They had plates of food already as well. However, there was no plate for you. Typical, you expected nothing less.
"Thank you." You went to the kitchen to see what was being made and, surprise surprise it was that damn stew. Great. Peachy. You looked at their plates again noticing they were chowing down. You should just leave. "Where's my plate?" They looked up at you and, Suma with a fucking smile said.
"Oh! We know you're not the biggest fan of the stew so there is something in the fridge for you!" Curious now you went to the fridge and, it took everything to keep you from throwing the whole fridge at them. It was a big Tuna covered with green vegetables. Now, you're not mad at the vegetables. You were angry at the Tuna because you're allergic. Now you can't eat the damn vegetables because they've been contaminated. You grabbed the food and, carefully with a tight smile went to the table and, placed it down on the table gently. You looked at them one by one.
"Who's idea was it for the Tuna?" Surprisingly it was Makio with a big grin. No malicious intent. None you can sense anyway. Still didn't take away the feeling of wanting to hit her.
"Me! I know how much you like Tuna!" She was so loud, proud, and, wrong. You did not like Tuna. You took a breath clasping your hands tightly together. You looked at all of them one by one again.
"Can any of you figure out why I can't eat this?" If they couldn't answer, you needed to leave. Give Tengen back his ring and, leave. You needed a break. It was silent. At least they were sweating.
"You don't like Tuna?" It was Tengen who winced as you looked at him with a grimace.
"I'm allergic." You could have heard a pin drop. You heaved a big sigh, holding a hand up and leaving them in the kitchen. That was it. You were done. You're leaving. You had it up to your neck with the bullshit. Going to your bathroom you grabbed everything quickly. You were trying to be quiet but, you knew Tengen would hear you. He was the Sound Hashira after all. When you got back to your room, you heard him making a bee-line to you. You ignored him as he closed the door behind him.
"What are you doing." It was a command. One you weren't interested in. He knew what you were doing. He had eyes.
"What does it look like Uzui. I'm leaving so you and your wives don't have to be bothered anymore with pretending." You were trying to pack up with haste but, he wasn't having it. He grabbed your hands forcefully turning you around to face him. He had a constipated look on his face.
"Our wives. You are our wife." You snorted trying to yank your hands from his grip but, he wasn't having it.
"You know something Uzui. It's really funny how you try to show you care now that you know I'm leaving you guys. Where was that care before huh? How come none of you were able to answer the fact that I'm allergic to Tuna? How come you didn't bother serving me food? What happened to taking turns with everything? I shouldn't have had to communicate and vocalize the neglect and loneliness I was feeling. I feel like a servant and, that is a feeling that is not going away for a long time. I thought I can try but, can't. My heart and brain won't allow it." He was shaking or maybe it was you. Probably both of you.
"So that's it? You're just going to leave us? All of us? Do you care about us? Does this-" He grabbed your finger with the ring on it "Mean anything to you." You rolled your eyes using your breathing technique to burn him. He flinched enough for you to get out of his hold.
"Yes, Uzui. I am leaving all of you. All of you ignored me. All of you decided that I was better off being a servant than, a wife." You were getting loud, pissed. You wanted to run. You took the ring off and, threw it at his face. "I don't want to be your fucking wife no more. I don't want to be ANY of your wives anymore. None of you don't appreciate or care for me the way YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO." You started packing all of your clothes, hygiene, and your swords you never got rid of. You left everything else. "I'm so tired of all of you. There are fucking diaries in that drawer right there!" You pointed to the top drawer "One for each of you. With your names. Read them, read them all and, you tell me if you understand. If you fucking can't none of you will ever have a chance at getting me back. I'm fucking done." You grabbed all your belongings leaving Tengen frozen while looking at the ring.
"Y/N!" You rushed past the three women, ignoring their pleas taking off in a run as soon as you were outside. If they couldn't appreciate you, you were going to make them work for it. Your heart and brain compromised on this. You weren't going to tell them about the journals but, they would have found it eventually. Your brain wanted to leave them high and dry never to return however, your heart ached for them. You did still love them. You loved all four of them with everything you had, the entire fibers of your being. You were tired though. They didn't love and appreciate you the way you wanted to be treated. You needed time away from them. You were giving them a chance to appease your heart. If they don't try to take a step in the right direction then you'll just get drunk and cry out all your feelings to the night. Move on then. Right. Easier said than done.
"Excuse me, miss?!" You turned around to see a young boy running behind you holding something in his hand. He was carrying a box on his back as well. He had on those sun-breathing Hanuffada earrings with a scar on his forehead. You remembered him from your ex-husband.
"Yes, Tanjiro?" He paused shocked you knew his name. You smiled at him "I know the sound and flame Hashira so they told me about you and, your friends. As well as Nezuko." He tensed a bit when you mentioned Nezuko. "Don't worry I know she's not like those other demons. She's a sweetheart." You smiled at him watching him sniff the air before smiling.
"You're telling the truth! I have a really strong nose so I can tell when someone is being honest or not." He handed you something and, what you saw made you smile. It was one of your knives you liked to carry. You must have been too deep in thought to realize you dropped it. "I just wanted to give this to you! You dropped it. Have a nice day miss!" Before he can jump away you grabbed his sleeve.
"It's Y/N. Don't be a stranger okay kid?" He smiled big at you. God, he was like the sun.
"I promise Y/N-Chan!" With that said he turned back around heading to who knows where. Now it was your turn to find somewhere to go. You took your time walking through the forest under the blossoming wisteria trees. You knew there were no demons around so your guard was down for the time being.
"My old estate..." You had an estate that you had left to live with Uzui. You would check up on it once in a blue moon so you knew it had everything you wanted and needed for this. With a direction in mind now, you no longer leisurely strolled. You moved with purpose in the direction of your estate. Your new home either temporarily or permanently. Depending on what Uzui and co want to do. You let your thoughts wander as you enjoyed the scenery. When you saw your hand-made path you smiled. This is what you missed. Some tranquility. Tugging your belongings along you moved faster wanting to get inside to warm up. You had no appetite so tomorrow you'll go to the market to buy groceries. Once inside you left your stuff in the living room to go check the house to make sure you still had running water and a working fridge. When you did, you smiled with relief.
"I didn't know anyone was here." You swirled around throwing a knife forcing a shriek at whoever it was. You blinked noticing a very familiar young boy.
"Senjuro?" The boy looked at you, blinked before breaking out in a grin. As if you didn't almost kill him. Your sweatdropped at the idea of Kyoujuro killing you. "What are you doing here? You know this is my Estate" His eyes widen bowing in apology.
"I'm sorry! I had no idea, I was just-" You walked up to the boy patting his head. He looked up at you making you chuckle. He looked so much like Kyoujuro. Well, they both were spitting images of their father Shinjuro. Alcoholic bastard.
"It's fine Senjuro. I just want you to be careful when exploring, okay? I want you to be safe and, I know for a fact Kyoujuro would die if anything happens to you." He had a guilty look on his face and, you wanted to get rid of it. "So, what brings you here? Would you like a snack? I don't have food, I need to go to the market tomorrow to get some groceries." He perked up at the idea of a snack and, nodded his head rapidly. Grinning you rummaged in your bag throwing apple slices and peanut butter crackers at him with juice. His eyes sparkled making you giggle.
"Thank you Nee-Chan!" You got flustered every time he called you nee-chan. It made you giddy. you grabbed your snack and went to sit on the floor in between the first bedroom and living room. Senjuro took a seat directly next to you.
"It's no problem." He decided to talk your ear off talking mostly about his brother and, father. You didn't like how their father treated both of them. Yes, he was grieving the loss of his wife but, that was no excuse to treat his only family like shit. Maybe you can talk to him...
"You know our Estate is only a 10-minute walk from here! Would you like to come over sometime?" You were surprised at how close you were. You thought about it looking out to see if it will be dark soon. You were only 10 minutes...
"We can go now." You got up dusting off your Kimono. It was summertime so it was thin and short. Exactly how you want it. You reached a hand out for Senjuro to hold, happy that he did. You left your Estate not worried too much about your belongings. Senjuro continued to talk excitedly until he got to his estate. You both stopped once inside the estate. You squeezed his hand reassuredly. "Go to your room love. I'm going to see what your father is doing." He hesitated but, with a head and cheek rub, he left closing the shoji doors to his room softly. Removing your shoes and putting them where Senjuro had his at you entered knowing exactly where Shinjuro was. He was upstairs towards the back. He had the largest room in the estate. You padded softly not even bothering to knock just opening the door and looking at the bottles of Sake all over the place.
"Get out of my room." He grumbled it, sounding half drunk. He was too coherent to be fully drunk though.
"That's not very polite of you Shinjuro-San." He turned around to look at you. He looked at you up and down rolling his eyes. Rude.
"Who let you in here?" You padded across the room not scared of him at all. He watched you like a hawk frowning when you took a seat next to him moving the empty bottles over. He needed to clean up.
"Myself. It's been a while since I've seen you Shinjuro." You hummed enjoying the silence between you two even though it was a bit tense. He burped putting the sake he was drinking to the side. That's when he finally looked at you out the corner of his eyes.
"Well ever since Tengen took you, you haven't done much of anything." You snorted squeezing your hands into fists. You saw him raise an eyebrow.
"Well, I am no longer Uzui's. Three is enough for him apparently." You showed him the empty finger turning away to keep from crying. You wanted to cry. Why did you want to cry in front of him? He hated weakness and, you might freak out if he says something smart.
"...Do you want to talk about it?" You looked at him fully this time to gouge his reaction. He wasn't being snarky. He had actually put away the sake bottle. Maybe...
"Well, it started three months ago...." You told him everything. All the details. You felt oddly safe with him and as if he wasn't going to judge you. You told him everything. You don't know how long you've been there but, by the time you finished, it was already dark. He said nothing waiting for you to be completely done. "It was just too much, so I came back to the Estate. The ballpark is in their hands now. I did my part." In the middle of you talking, you tried some Sake gagging on it before he snatched it away from you. The worst thing you ever had. It tasted like depression no wonder he drank it.
"I am probably the last person to give advice given my own habits." He glanced at all the sake bottles. "I know you still love them. You always will regardless of what happens. I hope it works in your favor. I rather see you smile than to see you cry again." You stared at Shinjuro for a solid minute before doing something impulsive. You latched onto him for a hug. He seized up as expected but, you didn't let go.
"For such an asshole of a man you're still so kind and genuine. Why don't you show that to Senjuro and Kyoujuro? I doubt Ruka would appreciate the man she married 'til death does us apart' neglect your children. She gave you life. She left you two beautiful boys to keep you sane. To keep you grounded. All you have been doing is verbally abusing them. Kyoujuro never held any ill intent about you. To everyone out there in the world you're the best man in the world, the best father anyone can ask for. Senjuro too. He won't dare tell anyone how you are. Only I know." You felt the man start shaking his hands going to grip the bottom of your kimono tight enough for his knuckles to turn white. "You're not a poor excuse of a Hashira. You do not disgrace the Rengoku name. It's never too late to make amends with your children. They are both still young and are always looking for you." Tears were soaking into your shoulder where he had buried his head. When the first sob tore from his throat he latched onto you like a lifeline crying into your shoulder. You knew it took a lot for him to be this vulnerable. You rocked him gently from side to side as he started apologizing in between sobs. You rubbed his back in soothing gestures looking over to the door at Senjuro who was peaking through the open shoji doors. You pressed a finger from your free hand to your lips and, with a nod he disappeared back to his room.
"You're right. I turned to a bottle instead of caring for our sons. Ruka please forgive me." He wasn't quite here right now so you allowed the man to continue to hide in your shoulder until he was ready to move. You let him go gently still not quite moving your hands from his person.
"Your sons still love you. They always have. Please don't let your grief, embarrassment, and shame allow you to ruin the relationship with the two people in this world that would do anything for you..." You ran a hand through his hair ignoring how dirty and greasy it was. He needed to wash it. "I know you'll do the same thing for them no matter how harsh your words are. It's time to stop pushing them away. Please Shinjuro." You said nothing else as the last of his sniffles went away.
"That was so not cool of me..." It caught you so off guard you laughed. A deep belly laugh. You don't know where it came from but, you couldn't stop. Soon enough Shinjuro's gruff laugh joined you before both of you calmed down. You looked at him with a grin.
"You're a beautiful person Shinjuro. Don't ruin it with such an ugly disposition." You turned to look at all the Sake bottles before you got an idea. "Kyoujuro is scheduled to come back from that Mugen train mission any time now I think he would love to see his dad sober. Go bathe. Wash your hair and I'll clean up." He paused and with a determined glint, he nodded leaving you to your own devices. Feeling a little frazzled you cleaned fast. You threw away all the sake whether empty or full. You fixed up his room, cleaning quickly too. It never took long to clean you had plenty of practice. When satisfied with his room, you moved to the spare rooms. They were very dusty so with cleaning supplies and energy you had all the rooms cleaned in no time. Now the only issue? You were exhausted.
"You can spend the night here if you want." You jumped turning to see Shinjuro standing in the open doorway with a towel around his waist and dripping hair. He had a muscled dad bod. Fuck you rampaging hormones for finding your friend's dad hot. This is toxic.
"I wouldn't want to intrude-" He shook his head with a soft smile. He has a really pretty smile.
"It's fine. Senjuro loves you and would be happy to know you're staying. Apparently, he had gone back to your estate to get some personal stuff for you. I was surprised too." That's when he held up the bag of your stuff in his hand. Welp. Looks like you're staying.
"You're very kind Shinjuro." He grinned walking into the room to set the bag down beside you and pat your head.
"The pleasure is mine. I'll be in my room if you need anything." He stood at the door before turning back to you "The baths are free if you want to clean up." He read your mind because that was exactly what you wanted. Thanking him again, you waited until he left to make a beeline for the baths with everything you got. You didn't spend too much time aware you were in someone else's home. By the time you finished bathing in the hot water and getting dressed in pajamas you blearily made it back to the spare room. Or so you thought. You saw a half-opened door and, entered. You blinked to see Senjuro curled up under his dad. You smiled about to leave but, Senjuro called out for you.
"Stay?" Oh, great heavens. His pouty face was too much so with no fight you grabbed a spare futon to lay next to them before laying down, passing out almost immediately. You felt a small hand grab yours before you succumbed to dreamland.

I'm literally winging it as I go with this story. It was a one-shot but, now it's a short story. Please do enjoy the chaos that will happen as I continue with the chapters!
